The Orient Express – the name conjures up images of luxury and louche characters. What I hadn’t realized is that Sirkeci Station in Istanbul was the terminus for the Orient Express. While the Orient Express no longer runs from Paris to Istanbul, Sirkeci Station still sees passenger trains stop at its platform, and the station itself still retains its architectural beauty. The station was built in 1890, and in 1892 the Pera Palas Hotel was built on the other side of the Galata Bridge with the express purpose of housing passengers on the Orient Express. It quickly became the favorite place for European visitors to lay their heads. It was the first hotel in Istanbul to have electricity, to have an electric elevator, and to provide hot running water for its guests. I wanted to follow ... read more

As someone who doesn’t like crowds, I clearly wasn’t thinking straight when I decided to visit Istanbul’s most popular shopping street on a holiday weekend in July when there were three cruise ships in port. It was crowded and crazy, but in a funny sort of way it served me well. The crowds forced me to look into the little alleys and passages, and there is some interesting stuff in the small byways. I only noticed the Aya Triada (Holy Trinity) church because of the cross I saw from the distance. I followed the sokak (alley) across from the French Consulate a short distance to the church. The outer door to the narthex was open, so I went in. There was a very pleasant caretaker who motioned that it was OK for me to go inside. ... read more

We arrived at night after being delayed in Paris (are things ever on time in France?), our car sent by our hotel was waiting for us to take us through the crazy Istanbul traffic. Even on a Wednesday late at night the roads were bumper to bumper traffic. When we pulled up to our hotel it was pouring rain, we grabbed our bags out of the back and ran inside. The staff at our hotel were really nice, we were pretty tired after traveling for 2 days but they welcomed us with tea and maps and gave us good advice about things to see and do in Istanbul. The next morning we were ready to hit the town and headed across the Galata Bridge to Sultanahmet. At the waterfront we were immediately greeted by a smattering ... read more

Istanbul September 11th 2014 “The more things change, the more they remain the same” Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr I have just spent 3 months in Turkey and I am on my way back to India, a country that seems to have me returning to again and again. It was my first time in Turkey however, and being so full of India, I could not seem to avoid the tendency to see things that reminded me of India. This so-called 'blog' is really a short pictorial essay and is intended for those who have travelled in India and who therefore will appreciate the similarities found between certain sights and practices I found in Turkey. There is no serious thesis involved here, just an attempt to share the smile on my face as I came across these things whilst ... read more

Today I've boated along a river between two continents that are part of the same country. Is Istanbul unique for this? I don't know but it makes for a good pub quiz question. When we planned our itinerary back in Stoke one rainy Sunday, I don't think that we really thought it through. My idea was not to waste time in Selcuk in the morning and get to Istanbul asap, so not to miss a thing. So a 7.10am flight didn't seem a bad idea until you factor in we had to get to Izmir first and all that checking in nonsense. And so we rose at 4.15am. The airport was surprisingly very busy. After landing in a very breezy Istanbul we took an hour long bus journey to Taksim in Beyoglu, which is the area ... read more

So I had a bit of a whinge in my previous post and I apologise if I lost any readers as a result... BUT my points stand :) Mostly though I am the idiot. Travelling without a gadget these days is a bit like having a passport without any pages. You are going to find yourself in difficulties at some point, particularly if you are dependent on the technology for blogging, travel bookings, flight changes etc on the go. Lesson learnt. As I mentioned it is a year down the line and here I am back in Europe's largest city, or the Mıddle East's depending on your defınition of the geographic boundaries. What has changed? If anything it seems more frenetic this time around. I checked into a hostel last Thursday near Taksım and have used ... read more

Today our destination was Nahil Gift Shop in Beyoglu where unique handicrafts are sold.. This shop is sponsored by a foundationp for the support of women's work . Women participating in development projects produce the goods .....the income is used to support women and children centers. We took the Metro to Taksim and walked Istiklal Cadessi to the shop located on Bekar Sokak ....just a few blocks from Taksim Square. After shopping we had lunch at Starbucks. A light rain began to fall so we headed back to metro for trip home. Shannon took us to see the Cevahir Mall on the way home. No new photos today so I will post some of my "kats of Istanbul" photos. We are winding down and must start to think about packing our souvenirs and leaving our clothes ... read more

After a lovely Sunday brunch of Simit, Jam, fresh fruit and eggs prepared by our personal Chef we set out by taxi to metro for a jam- packed day of Istanbul life. We strolled through Gezi Park past the fountains and greenery to Taksim Square....a rather stark concrete area but none the less, the hub of activity in modern Beyoglu. This square leads into the busy Istiklal Cadessi which is where everyone seems to gather on such a lovely Sunday afternoon. We slithered and nudged our way through the crowds of people....trying to stay together, snapping photos, stopping to shop for yet another evil eye, watching the street performers and just soaking up the feel of Istanbul life. We found a Starbuckus so had to make a coffee stop and hit the W/C before heading for ... read more

Today Shannon drove us to the Zorlu mall to park and catch the Metro. We parked underground.....went up many levels into mall area, walked several moving sidewalks through a long tunnel and arrived at Metro! We Rode to the Sishane stop and came above ground in the old area of Istanbul called Beyoglu. This steep hill north of the Golden Horn is an old part of the city where we walked the cobble stone streets to the historic Galata Tower. ThEt tower is 196 ft. high topped by a conical tower. It's origins date from the 6th century when it was used to monitor shipping. It was later turned into a prison and naval depot, and then into a fire watchtower. Of course we shopped :-) the wonderful little lanes and streets before going to the rooftop ... read more
