I just visited the exciting city of Istanbul. It was a great experience. So for all you doubters out there, this is my story for you: Lately, the street riots in Turkey have people wondering whether they should book a holiday to this destination, or cancel the one already booked. There are several stories circulating in newspapers and blogs, many of which depict a worrying picture of Turkey's streets, the protests and safety of tourists. Despite this tour operators are not flinching and it is business as usual. What happened The street protests hitting Turkey began on May 31, sparked by redevelopment plans for Gezi Park. Around 2.5 million people took to the streets peacefully, but were met with police using tear gas, plastic pellets and water cannons to disperse crowds. More clashes between protesters and ... read more

And so I cycled into Istanbul on Wednesday 12 June 2013, 3.5 months after leaving the UK, my first major milestone on this cycle trip and I have been resting ever since. The past few days have been both physically and mentally challenging with the temperature rising, the mountains getting steeper and the headwind fiercer. For me the mental challenge has however been the greater of the two, with my patience wearing a little thin on occasions. I'm hoping that the next few days away from the bicycle will reinvigorate my mental energy as I commence the next leg of my tour. During the past few weeks I have seen some amazing buildings, encountered plenty of wild animals, received some fantastic hospitality and encountered many hookers (the non rugby types). After leaving Bitola in Macedonia, I ... read more

My second day in Istanbul. I was staying on the Asian side, so I had to take a minibus to Usküdar, then take the ferry to go across the Bosphorus until Eminönöu (European side). The ferry takes around 15 minutes, enough to take a deep breath, watch the landscape and believe it! You are in the city that belongs to 2 continents. It is better to take a ferry than going in car trough the Bosphorus bridge, it could take until 2 hours because of traffic. I loved Eminönü, from the ferry you can see the New Mosque and lost of people around (population in Istanbul is around 13 million people). I was satrving so I bought a piece of bread sold in small cars (only 1 TL) and then took my way to Galata Bridge ... read more

Hey I know you, I’ve seen you on TV, you are Beyoncé (sometimes Rihanna) right? Hey ‘Chocolate Face’, how are you? Can I have your number? These are the type of comments I got while in Istanbul, Turkey. Sometimes I loved it and sometimes it irritated me. Visiting Istanbul was a huge transition for me since the countries I’ve visited in the past were always in West Africa, Latin America or the Caribbean. Therefore, for the first time in my life, I couldn’t speak the language of the country I was visiting. L But I survived my 7 days’ vacation. Although Istanbul is not the capital of Turkey, it has the largest population in Turkey – about 13million people. Let me tell you 5 reasons why you should visit Istanbul: 1. Good Food: Turkey ... read more

SEPT 1 2011 I woke up with a jolt today, jello in my veins. My uncle's alarm clock was ringing, as expected. Had I really slept or just been thinking? I looked bleary-eyed at the time. 2AM. I've seen this time before on many occasions. Sometimes because sleep simply won't bless me with respite, others because I'm, as my Grandma would say, out on the town. But waking up at 2AM... waking up at 2AM is not something I've done before. Not something I was ever keen to do. Looking out at the dark cold air, the day hasn't even started to consider unfolding. It isn't overly depressing or foreboding, it's just so early that nothing can be made of today. Or tomorrow? I can't tell. I'm at the airport now. It's 5AM, 1.5 hours until ... read more

Istanbul is divided by several seas, today we crossed the Galata Bridge by tram to visit Kabatas, Taxim Square and the Galata Tower. From the end of the tram line at Kabatas we caught the Funicular tram uphill to Taksim Square, this is an up market shopping area, Istiklal Caddesi is a long boulevard, no traffic except an old tram that trundles up and down the middle. We intended to catch the tram but couldn't find where to purchase the prepaid ticket. The Cadessi is line with up market stores many of the brands also known in New Zealand. It was a long hike, but worth it as we arrived at the Galata Tower about 2 hours later. The tower is 60 metres high and was used as a monitor for shipping but later turned into ... read more

Saturday was a beautiful, sunny day, so I set off with another teacher and her boyfriend to see some of the sights. We took a bus from our neighborhood Batiataşhir to the ferry docks. (A note on Turkish: the ş is pronounced like the “sh” sound in English, and the ç is like “ch”) The bus ride was exciting mostly because I’ve been so busy moving in that I haven’t done much beyond stocking my kitchen and buying useful stuff like a surge protector. There are a couple busses that go to the ferry docks, but we took the 8A. The ferries all take off from buildings along the wharf. Each building has the name of the place or places that its ferry goes to and they are all beautiful buildings. They looked more like museums ... read more

What a city. I guess Istanbul never sleeps… I arrived there on a Saturday, actually for a conference, the European Congress of Psychology. But of course I had planned on doing some sightseeing as well. I stayed in a hotel in Taksim, where there are lots of shops, restaurants, and cafés. My first walk took me from the Taksim Square down the pedestrian area that was incredibly crowded. Those of you who know me know that I usually don’t like strolling around, so at first, I tried to overtake other people on the left and on the right. But then I realised that this just did not make sense, and so I let myself carry with the wave of people. Stages were just being set up all around the area, with bands getting ready for their ... read more
