The campsite got interesting, Nick and Nicky our camp hosts had let us know that a large group would be arriving……. Woolly says – I thought it might be thirty or so people but NO it actually meant 180 Ukrainians who started arriving at 3pm and continued arriving until the early hours. We woke up to a forest of tents, they were everywhere. Jo tried to get into one of the three shower cubicles but it wasn’t going to happen. We packed up as planned and headed for some breakfast. We gave that idea up, it was pandemonium. Grabbing a couple of bottles of juice we hit the road. We would have waited an hour or so to be fed and we went with the view of ‘get something on the way’ and programmed James for ... read more

Feeling like I had done everything I wanted to do in Fethiye - apart from taking a four-day sailing trip back along the coast to Marmaris, which I had already decided I could no longer afford - I returned my scooter on monday morning (28th May) and took a typically slow but scenic bus ride through the Akdaglar mountains to Pamukkale - the site of the world-famous travertines. For those that are unfamiliar with Pamukkale, the travertines are basically a series of terraced pools high up on a hillside that have formed over millenia from the calcium deposits left behind by spring water that gushes out from the top of the hill and then cascades down the slope, smoothing over the travertines as it does so; while simultaneously they are being bleached an almost-perfect white by ... read more

This morning we left the hotel bright and early at 6am and headed to Koycegiz. The drive took about 3 hours and we stopped on the way to take some photos of the scenery. When we arrived we checked into our hotel that we would be staying in that night. We walked down to the waterfront at 10.30 and got on a boat which took us across a lake to a channel where there was a beach. On the way we saw a massive turtle, apparently these turtles usually lay their eggs on that particular beach. We went for a swim and the. Had lunch on the boat, then they took us to a natural mud bath and we covered ourselves in mud. We sat on the side and let it dry then we showered and ... read more

We woke up early so we could get to our next destination, Koycegiz, early since we had a day cruise booked to a beach island. It was only about an hour and a half drive to there, so we all were excited not to spend too much time on the bus for once! We got to the hotel, hopped out of the bus, and walked over to the boat and hopped on. The boat was a nice size with lots of seats and tables, and there weren’t too many people on the boat which was nice! We set sail immediately after boarding and all of us settled in. As we were driving along the views of the mountains were just incredible and the water was so blue! Fatih sat down next to me and started reading ... read more

Fez Bus: Sector 3 - Selcuk to Koycegiz After 3 nights in Selcuk it was back on the Fez Bus for the journey to Koycegiz (pronounced Coogies, obviously). To be honest the first half of the day was a complete waste of time with us only actually travelling about 30 miles from Selcuk and instead visiting a variety of sales rooms. We started in a gorgeous little village called Sirence where we sampled the local fruit wines which come in a variety of flavours including mulberry, kiwi, peach and pomegranate of which Col’s favourite was the mulberry (I was still a bit under the weather so had a lovely glass of apple tea instead). Sirence had been a Greek village until the “population exchange” in the 1920s (when Greek communities in Turkey were sent back to ... read more

Hi, Sorry for the radio silence, I am alive and kicking in Turkey! Following an exciting and communist collector item fuelled trip to Sofia (and a trip to the beautiful mosiac filled Rila Monastary), I got the remainder of the Orient Express to Istanbul. Apparently there was drama at the Turkish border at 3am, and lots of American tourists complaining that the border guard had taken their passports and *shock horror* they were out of sight (in the polis station). I missed the whole thing by sleeping with earplugs, waking up with 10 mins to train departure time, sauntering out and getting my visa and stamp while the Americans were running around the platform like headless chickens. They were all traumatised. Poor things. So, the heat of Turkey! Delicious delicious Turkey. Home to Baklava, Turkish delight ... read more

Off to the otogar in Selcuk for a 4 and a half hour bus ride to Göycegiz (pronounced Guy Cheese) I was advised to come here by the owner of the Kiwi Pension, Alison. Lets hope it lives up expectation! After a non eventful bus ride with a rest stop at a 3 Michelin star restaurant (It seemed like it with the prices), I just settled with a ice cream. I arrived at the Göycegiz otogar and got a minibus to the Tango Pension. It's a little dearer than the other places I have stayed in rural Turkey, but I have a en suite room, hammocks on tap and free cycle hire. Watch out Göycegiz! Although there are no squeaky things to squeak a la Berlin :-(. Checking out the town by bike is easier than ... read more
