Hey All / Any that log into this.... Just back from a really thrilling holiday in Jordan (Yes I know, most people think im on a holiday in kuwait, but i get more too) Some of the highlights included: - Going on a camel ride as the sunrose at 5.30AM. Absolutely stunning - we went into the desert and stayed at a Bedquin camp (Where the locals lives in tents in the desert) - Had a good camp fire etc before - like my old scout days ) - Visting Roman ruins at Jesrah (North of Amman) - most impressive - got almost involved with their Roman drama/play and were killed by a Gladiator!! - Climbing Mt Nobu was wicked, unbelievable views looking down towards Bethlehem, Jerusalam, Jerricho etc... That was where Moses first stood and ... read more

I dont understand how Jordan can be so poor and yet have one of the strongest currencies in the world. the Jordinian Dinar, is almost worth as much as the British pound - and they loooove getting you to hand over more of them than you need to. there's no real structure to the public transport so getting around is quite a mission. for example, there might be a bus going from A to B, but it doesn't leave untill it's full of punters, and if there aren't enough punters then you might get told to wait till the next next day. so we hitched around quite a bit and always seemed to get picked up pretty quick, thats where travelling with a girl comes in handy I guess. you'll see some photos of Justine in ... read more

Soooooooooo After my little soujourn to the UK I felt the desire to get back on track and head into the depths of the Middle East. In planning this trip I had very early on sought out Jordan as a place I wanted to visit. The vast desert landscapes, wonderous ancient city of Petra, and reputed amazing Jordanaian hospitality all conspired in my brain to get me there. And of course all these aspects and more of Jordan rang true. With a gait in my step I boarded Jordanain Airlines flight 816 headed from Istanbul to Amman. I was super stoked to be flying over the middle east and taking my place at a window seat I pretty much gawked at the landscape for the whole two hour flight. Except when the food was served, then ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Aqaba September 14th 2006

New blog, this time from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. I'm writing this blog from Aqaba, which is Jordan's only port city at the southernmost tip of the country. This is my last stop in Jordan, as I will shortly be leaving Jordan and entering Israel, hopefully. It still remains to be seen what the Israeli border guards will think of my Syrian visa and border stamps, but I'm hopeful they will let me in, although probably not without some sort of search. But, with regards to Jordan, I've been in the country for about 5 days. As with all the countries I've visited, a very interesting place. Compared to Syria, which I just came from, it is much more westernized. Foreign investment is widespread, and there is not as much as an aversion to being ... read more

Long time no write! What a week it has been. Getting out of Egypt was a tremendous challenge. After a relaxing time in Dahab, we boarded the bus to head up the coast to catch the ferry to Jordan. Simple this may sound, but not when you're in Egypt! You can't make bookings so we sat in the truck (about 35 degrees) and waited from 9.20am to 9.00pm to get tickets. The office only opened for about 10 mins at a time. Unfortunately, day 1 we couldn't get tickets as all the locals are heading to Mecca prior to Ramadan. So we headed off to a beachside resort (ha!) for the night. No electricity, no water (therefore no showers and toilets) and about a million degrees. Couldn't sleep outside as the dogs barked at us! Fortunately ... read more

Tuesday August 8, 2006 - Got up today with no particular plans, as my trip to the Dead Sea was canceled. Of course it was canceled, it was a little too good to be true. He had "training" today. Oh well. Instead I tried to get in touch with the Russian and Chinese embassies in Istanbul in order to get correct visa information. Let me just take an aside and say that I am ready to leave Jordan. Although it's not nearly as bad as Egypt was, I am still uncomfortable here as a woman and it gets worse everyday. I seem to attract crazy amounts of unwanted attention. Just lucky I guess. For example, there is a man from Syria who stays in my hotel and finds all kinds of excuses to come to my ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » West » Al Karak August 7th 2006

Monday August 7, 2006 - Another early day. Got up and had to take a taxi to the bus station to get the bus to Karak, which is two hours from Amman. Finished reading my book so that I could swap with my roommate. When I got there the driver told me to get off, but I couldn't see where the castle would even be. Just like yesterday, only not as bad. But frustrating. So I asked a man in the street which way to go, but since he didn't really speak English, he walked me all the way to the castle. Very nice actually. Spent the next three hours or so wandering around. It is a standing castle, but a lot of ruins. A lot of it is without a roof, and then there were ... read more

Middle East » Jordan August 6th 2006

Sunday, August 6, 2006 - Today was a classic. I got up early in order to be at the Chinese embassy when they opened at 9am. I took a relatively expensive cab ride there and then couldn't figure out how to get in. The police man on duty led me around to the back entrance with his big gun and then I spoke to the woman about getting a visa. Turns out I need a letter from my embassy and about $75. So I walked out and will hope for better luck in Turkey. I went next to Turkish Airlines to buy my ticket to Turkey next week. The cab driver got lost and had to ask for directions a few times, and this got on my nerves because we were using the meter and this ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » West » Madaba August 5th 2006

Saturday, August 5, 2006 - Today I got up early and met Alex to start the day. We had big plans - go to Madaba to find him a new hotel, then visit Mt. Nebo, Bethany, and the Dead Sea. Easy right? We had to get a share taxi to the bus station and then a bus to Madaba. That part was easy. He checked into his hotel and then we were off. Got a taxi to Mt. Nebo, the place where Moses saw the promised land and later died and was buried. He picked a good place - there were really nice views of the area, including the Dead Sea and Jerusalem (if there hadn't been haze and pollution). We walked around, and then went into the church there dedicated to Moses. Inside the church ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » North » Jerash August 4th 2006

Friday August 4, 2006 - I woke up this morning and talked to my new roommate while she packed - she was headed to Madaba, a nearby town. I decided to go to Jerash, an Ancient Roman city that is still being excavated. Went to buy some water and felafel and found myself waiting for a service taxi to the bus station with my roommate. So we got a taxi and said good bye at the bus station. I got on a bus to Jerash that was just leaving (good luck) and sat next to a girl who decided to smoke even though the windows didn't open (bad luck). The ride was an hour or so and when I got off the bus I noticed one other tourist. I spoke to him and we ended up ... read more
