Geo: 29.5234, 35.0072Yeah, we left Egypt behind.. it's a funny thing but the reality is Egypt was hard work. Baksheesh is the only thing they understand and it gets tiring. I think we got jack of the Baksheesh thing because being Australian we do not understand how something at the end of the day can cost more then the agreed price!! The buggers generally attempt to short change you just in case you do not double count the money then they pocket the Baksheesh!! They have this interesting way of folding the notes over and double counting the one in the middle. Having seen the technique practiced a fair bit now we generally get the full change back. The process to get out of Egypt was nearly as crazy as the event to get in, none the ... read more

Esalam alequom everybody! I just finished my PADI diving course in the Red Sea of Aqaba. I spent about 6 days to go from an absolute newbie to an advanced diver! I decided to take two courses: open water diving and advanced level diving. The first two days of the open water diving course was a lot of studying and prepping myself for the final exam. Eek! I’ve been out of school for so long that I almost forgot how much I dislike exams. I was getting a headache because I haven’t used my brain to study in such a long time. Once that was done, I had to learn a whole bunch of different exercises underwater so that I wouldn’t drown. I had to learn so many techniques and then perform it to my ... read more

Hi there, So last night we drove to Aqaba. Like last time, we got some drinks from a local store and had a beer on the beach. After that we went to a hotel with a nice view on the Red Sea and so this morning I went for a swim in the Red Sea. Since there is a lot we have to do today, we woke up early, had a nice breakfast and took off. Round 9am I found myself amongst the fish in the red sea. I have never seen anything like this before. Again all these oh's and waauw's, this time under water. Unfortunately, my camera doesn't like water, otherwise I would have taken some nice pictures. No one else in the water where we were except me and my goggles :-) After ... read more

We will soon start the PADI Advanced Open Water Course at Aqaba Adventure Divers (AAD). Last night, we were treated to a traditional Bedouin dinner. All the mattresses, pillows and camel saddles were laid out near the pool with a large table containing the fire placed in the middle of the square of mattresses. Only the men sit around the fire, with the women sitting at the tables and chairs about 10 metres away. The meal was swordfish with rice and pine nuts - it was absolutely brilliant! But we had eaten a similar dish with lamb with the AAD crew earlier that afternoon! The food is served in large platters (like mensaf) and everyone sits or kneels around the platter (which is placed on a low table). The freaky thing is that everyone eats with ... read more

PADI Open Water Diver Course 27 Nov 09:We left the apartment the day before Eid started - a hard time to find somewhere to stay! When we asked about accommodation at Aqaba Adventure Divers, everything was fully booked. I asked about camping (many people were camping on the beach nearby) and we were welcome to stay on the rooftop or pitch a tent on the sandy volleyball court out the back of the centre. We opted for the rooftop and went to Safeway in Aqaba to purchase a few things such as sleeping bags, tent, camping mattresses, camelbaks etc before moving to the dive centre. That first evening, we started on the course manuals and the video for the open water course. We went hard core on the academic stuff, getting through 3/5 of the material ... read more

This is a bit of an enthnographic approach (not sure how I feel about this sort of stuff), but anyway it's an attempt to explain the little things. The Camel Trek - for next time :( I organised a camel trek through Gordon Williams, a Scotsman who consults to the local Bedouin tribe from the area at St Katherines Monastery near Mt Sinai. The camel school was a European Union initiative so it is all above board - but it will only be the two of us with a Bedouin guide/teacher in the desert. You can see the details here for the Camel School. Later note - we went diving and the camel trek didn't happen... Cooking I have started a recipe blog to actually document some of the simple recipes I have stored in my ... read more

First visit just before closing time... We arrived at Qal'at el 'Aqaba 5 minutes before closing time, so we didn't have long to see the sites. The Aqaba Museum next door was also closing, and rather than pay the JOD 1 fee each, we decided to come back another day. Anyway, we had a chance to take a few photographs and to look around the area. The following information was provided on a noticeboard at the castle. All grammatical and typographical errors are in the original: UNIVERSITY OF GENT (BELGIUM) UNIVERSITY OF LYON (FRANCE) DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES OF JORDAN In collaboration with ANDREWS UNIVERSITY (USA) UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN (DENMARK) AQABA CASTLE PROJECT Prof. Dr. J. How we got to Aqaba We arrived in Aqaba for the first time on the evening of Thursday 5 November after a 3 1/2 hour drive from Amman. We had borrowed a car so we only had until the Saturday to visit, and we stayed with a friend who works as a flight instructor. On the first night, we visited a tourist complex with a bunch of different restaurants. We sat in an 'English' pub while we waited for our friend. The next day, we went for a PADI discovery dive at Adventure Divers next to the Bedouin Moon Hostel down towards Aqaba's South Coast. The dive was amazing. We were driven down to the beach from the dive centre in an old minivan. Because it was Friday, most of the locals were having barbecues on ... read more

Day 15 - Saturday 17th October. Ferry crossing to Aqaba in Jordan. We departed Dahab at 8.30am and after 2 hours arrived at the port village of Nuweiba for our ferry crossing to Jordan. Tracy our tour leader just explained that every time she does this crossing the procedure is different. There is an exit tax of 50LE plus the ferry ticket of 60LE both are paid at the ferry ticket office where our passports are needed before a ticket is issued. Next we go through security where we must all present at least one bag to be x-rayed. It doesn’t matter if we leave our main luggage on board just so long as we have 1 bag to pass through the security screen, Go figure! After security it’s a trip to the emigration office for ... read more

Sinai And Across The Gulf First thing in the morning I joined up with the other Gecko's tour group and we piled into the bus and left Cairo for the last time. Apart from the history and the wondrous sights, Cairo will leave the impression that it's a city on the verge of getting out of the third world, if only it could pull the population along with it. A massive metropolis with dirty streets and hagglers in all the markets, but also a thriving business district for fashion and electronics as well as all the resources it needs to be sustained. Heading East, we spent the next three hours watching the landscape get slowly more arid (I didn't think it was possible but it does), until we finally reached the border between Africa and Asia, ... read more
