After driving out of the desert, we could scarcely believe that we would be beach side after less than an hour on the road. Our destination was Aqaba, a town on the Red Sea, located somewhere between Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. This is where lots of Jordanian families and young people come to enjoy their holidays and weekends. It is also rapidly gaining popularity with Western visitors who come to check out the sights below water. Scuba diving and snorkelling is the big draw card with the Westerners here. I was determined not to like Aqaba but it ended up being one of my favourite destinations. On the weekends it is the strangest mix of cultures - Muslim ladies splashing about in the sea, fully covered in their hijab, men lying back in the sand ... read more

I hope that everyone enjoyed the last two entries, or at least managed to get half-way through the first one which is a feat within itself. This section should shock and amazing you with the camels and snorkeling and Bedouin! Here it goes... Aqaba After we spent Tuesday night in Damascus Roger and I caught a bus back to Amman where we had a frustratingly easy time getting back into Jordan. We only spend 2 hours in Amman before leaving, just enough time to go home take a shower, send some emails, repack, and cook lunch (which I carried out with me in a plastic bag which attracted many stares). After that we boarded a beaten down bus for the 4 hour trip from Amman to Aqaba which is far down south on the Gulf of ... read more

After leaving the Wadi Rum, we drove another couple hours to the Red Sea in Aqaba. The best options to visit Aqaba for foriegners is to buy entry into a hotel beach. The public beaches are not too welcoming I've been told. We decided to opt for a longer drive but better snorkling and cheaper prices at a resort area about 30 minutes south of Aqaba called The Royal Society for Diving... or something like that. It was perfect. We entered for 7 JD each and rented snorkling gear for 5 JD. The beach was very clean with shade and chairs and the resturant very good. The water was crystal clear and blue as the Carribean. The snorkling was just off the beach with a very nice coral reef and many colorful fish. I was ... read more

Canada day this year was much fun! We left the hotel at Petra early in the morning and drove to Wadi Rum, home of the local tribes. We took jeeps out into the desert and drove around, all over and up over sand dunes. Much better then a Disney ride. Much weaving happened and 360's. We visited a cave where part of the new Indiana Jones movie was filmed, and had cave drawing in it from the Neolithic age. Wadi Rum was just amazing, just you the sand and the mountains. Once again pictures will be added soon. Then we continued on to Aqaba where three of us had quite the adventure trying to get around. We wanted to visit an aquarium and our taxi driver neither spoke English nor knew of the aquarium. Once we ... read more

for the past week and more I've been roaming up and down the Nile with 3 other travelers and 1 tour leader from intrepid tour. it's been quite good since the activities focus more on local culture immersion than the usual traps, and it's a nice break from worrying about logistics. sorry about not replying to emails since gmail is tempermental, but thanks for all the family and friends checking in on me. when internet connect gets better I'll send personalized emails. if you are wondering about the lower case, blame it on the keyboard. below are day to day breakdowns of what i saw in different locations, quite a bit since we are on the road every day. before that, however, i highlight few things about Egypt: 1. with Suez canal providing the most ... read more

Visiting Jordan with Philip (american and fellow backpacker), after surprisingly stunning Lebanon, is another treat: Playing backgammon, and mastering my ability to failure (bets cannot get better, and I rage when I loose), driving along the King Hussein Highway and its picturesque landscape while listening to Pussycat dolls tape all day long, dringking loads of chai (tea) and puffing the magic narguile all along, witnessing the beauty of the jordan scenery, whether its the camels in a deserted field (having the chance to meet a local bedouin that lets you ride one of its camel, make you some perfect and hot tea, and bargaining your price to the man travelling with you, suggesting you are worth 3 camels !!!)... I could keep on like that, the list is long for a seven day trip in the ... read more

Well kids that looks like it for Jordan. We're at the border town of Aqaba by the Red Sea. I've been looking forward to this for a lonnnnnng time. Tomorrow if all goes well I'll be going diving in Dahab. Yes!!! Can't wait man... Until now we haven't really gotten a chance to actually sit and write without being under a time crunch. This whole internet cafe hopping thing is so not cool. Miss spending hours on the computer doing nothing. Tonight we're getting on an overnight ferry that sails into Dahab in the Sinai peninsular. The ferry crossing is so random that we'll prob end up waiting for hours on each side. Where's a good book when you need one? I've been writing in my journal religiously so that will keep me occupied as well. ... read more

...andthefinestmerchandisethissideoftheriverJordanonsaletodaycomeondown!!hehe! Well, actually it was Aqaba, not Aggribah, but I'm such a fan of Aladdin I couldn't pass up that opportunity. (Hi Ian!) Sooo, lets try for a shorter post today, I'm falling too far behind. After our exploits on Mt Sinai we continued to the Egyptian coast to board a hydrofoil for the '1 hour' crossing to Jordan. Well, that was accurate, it did take about 1 hour to cross. What they didn't mention is the 4 hours sitting on extremely uncomfortable wooden benches inside customs with absolutely nothing to do, the ~1 hour it took to travel 200m and get on the boat (involving loading on to and off of buses), the ridiculous amounts of arguing and gesticulation between officials, or the 45minutes we sat on the stationary boat at the other end ... read more

New blog, this time from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. I'm writing this blog from Aqaba, which is Jordan's only port city at the southernmost tip of the country. This is my last stop in Jordan, as I will shortly be leaving Jordan and entering Israel, hopefully. It still remains to be seen what the Israeli border guards will think of my Syrian visa and border stamps, but I'm hopeful they will let me in, although probably not without some sort of search. But, with regards to Jordan, I've been in the country for about 5 days. As with all the countries I've visited, a very interesting place. Compared to Syria, which I just came from, it is much more westernized. Foreign investment is widespread, and there is not as much as an aversion to being ... read more
