Aqaba, Jordan --- October 21, 2010 When one is flying from Dubai to Aqaba and look out the window you now have the ultimate picture to define desolate. This is some of the most inhospitable terrain, sand for as far as you can see only broken with some of the most rugged mountains around. This is a land where humans were never intended to live. Jordan has only 61 miles of territory along the Red Sea and Aqaba is their main port. Just across the bay is Israel so there is a fairly obvious police and military presence. From our balcony at the Intercontental we could look across and see the lights on in Aqaba’s sister city in Israel. A few years ago a couple of terrorists blew themselves up in 2 hotels in Amman, the ... read more

Up at 7:30, breakfast, buses. Another day excursion awaits. This one is to Wadi Rum, a protected area that is Bedouin country. About an hour 20 minute drive on the bus brings us to the starting point, a modern building in old style with a gift shop. Wadi Rum is a wide, mostly flat desert stretching for miles, ringed and punctuated by amazing sandstone cliffs like we saw yesterday around Petra. It is actually the bed of an ancient sea. Parts of the movie Lawrence of Arabia were filmed here, which is historically accurate, since this is one of the forbidding areas that the real Lawrence travelled through. We are loaded 6 to a vehicle onto what are termed "Bedouin jeeps" but are really a ragtag collection of four-wheel drive vehicles that have been adapted for ... read more

We sleep well. Up at 7 am. Breakfast and then we prepare for our excursion to Petra, which we know is going to be somewhat arduous. We board our bus for the 2 1/2 hour bus ride. The terrain is amazing. Essentially we get to see at ground level the endless mountains we saw from the plane. The land is so arid and barren, you wonder how anything can survive. There are occasional clumps of buildings that constitute villages, and we also see Bedouin tents. On the way, Abraham talks about daily life in Jordan and outlines the history of Petra. Petra is an ancient settlement first discovered and settled by a nomadic tribe called the Nabateans around 200 BC, later conquered by the Romans. Around 800 AD it was mostly abandoned and essentially lost for ... read more

A blissful sleep until 9 am. We repack and go down for breakfast, a buffet that is one of the best yet and includes many Middle Eastern dishes that we've never heard of. I particularly like the chickpeas cooked like baked beans. Vi enjoys the exotic fruit, including a mangosteen. We leave the hotel at 12:45, delayed by a member of our group who lost her wedding ring in her room. Luckily it is found by hotel staff. After another hurry-up-and-wait exercise at the airport, it's wheels up at 3 pm. A 3-hour flight to Aqaba, Jordan. The sky is completely clear and Captain Al, who used to fly for the sultans, points out Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain as we fly over the Persian Gulf. Most of the terrain is either sand or mountains, all ... read more

Aqaba and Taba Bay: Aqaba has an astouding location: minutes to Saudi in one direction and very close to Egypt and Eilat in Israel. However, it is also a bit like seaside towns everywhere...lots of restaurants, shops selling diving gear and tourist tat and a few 'luxury ' hotels... Not being divers (so no amazing fish and coral photos...)and by this time, just wanting to lie flat on our backs on the sand, we didn't do very much except laze around, swim and eat....but relaxation at last: no deserts to traverse, no shaking out of shoes in the morning, hoping to dislodge lurking scorpions...just a luxurious ( comparitively, anyhow) hotel and the sea and sand....the only exciting event was Rob coming face-to-face with a giant manta ray (although Rob in full snorkelling gear is a fairly ... read more

Ahlan wa Sahlan! I can't believe the time has come and passed of my last full weekend of Jordan. I knew I had to have a spectacular trip for my last big hoorah. That is exactly why I decided to go to Aqaba and Wadi Rum this past weekend! To get from Amman to Aqaba I and the two girls I live with, Tara and Laura, and their friend Pat, took a Jett Bus (again gotta love the AC) that was four hours, and a double decker (full) to Aqaba. The bus ride was pretty uneventful until right outside of Aqaba where there was a checkpoint and a solider came on to check everyone's passports. Other than that (and the annoying "in transit entertainment") the ride was good. Aqaba is Jordan's only port city and is ... read more

Wadi Rum: Well. part of it. None of the trucks were air-conditioned and being asthmatic, I couldn't risk a two hour plus journey out to the desert in the August heat - disappointing! And I wasn't the only one who decided not to - wonder how much it would cost to get better trucks and how much money is lost by tourists deciding not to go? But at least we did get to see a tiny bit of it. Just have to wait for another trip...... read more

July 18 I'm writing this journal entry for a day that I don't really want to remember. But still for our memories it must be documented! We woke up casually and the plan was to go snorkeling in the red sea. I (elysia) tried to go snorkeling the day before with another girl from the group, but I got as far as the reef and I saw huge sea urchin and a huge fat fish and I got scared and swam back to shore (which was actually quite far away). For those who don't know, im afraid of things under the water. Usually if i can see them (snorkeling) and the tide is high so i don't have to rub up against it, i'm okay (it helps if mike is there too)  but the tide was ... read more

Four days have passed and we have reached the south of Jordan, Aqaba at the red sea. After warm and long days in the desert it was time to treat ourselves with a nice dip in the crystal clear water. I've been to Eilat twice and I have always been able to see Jordan from far, but now I was in Jordan looking at Israel and Eilat. It was a funny feeling. We were sitting on the beach in Aqaba, to the left we could see a city belonging to Saudi Arabia (walking distance), across the sea were the mountains of Sinai in Egypt and to the right, in the bay, was Eilat, Israel. It's a weird feeling knowing we can't go to the left (Saudi Arabia) and the people to the right (Israel) can't come ... read more

Really, we only spent around 7 hours overnight in Aqaba, so this post is less to tell you about Aqaba (a port town in southern Jordan) and more to tell you about the "adventure" of travelling just 70km over the course of 10 hours! We hopped on a bus to a small village (and port town in Egypt) called Nuweiba. From here we were to catch a ferry from Egypt into Jordan. We cleared customs, and were shuttled into a "holding area" filled with hundreds of people (locals and tourists)waiting to catch the ferry to Aqaba, Jordan. We were initially told the ferry was supposed to leave around 2:30pm, so we got there around noon which should leave us ample time... but the ferry was rather late (by around 5 hours) and we didn't get on ... read more
