Clearly I've had a busy summer so far (it's often difficult to find time to sit down and write a blog entry when database entries need to be written, remote sesning data needs to be processed or hilltop sunsets need to be enjoyed with a cold beer in hand), and nearly every day I remember the myriad of promises I made to continue the Travel Blog this summer, and how I’ve simply failed to do so, and then I promise myself that today I will finally sit down and crank out a few entries to get back on track…next thing I know I’m waking up again, kicking myself for not writing and promising myself again—needless to say, I have no credibility with myself anymore. All that said I've discovered a rare hour (!) of uninterrupted peace ... read more

Cyprus. From Roman ruins set beside the azure Mediterranean to lush, cool mountains asking you to mountain bike through them, Cyprus has an incredible variety of experiences to offer! The south is closely tied to Greece and a part of the EU. It was a great place to practice my Romanian as a huge percentage of the service workers were Romanian! They even had Romanian stores offering traditional Romanian foods, like Cascaval and Telemea cheese. Then you cross into the Turkish rooted northern side of the island to find a less tourist centered and perhaps more authentic experience. Poorer than the south - yes. But when it came to warm interactions with the Cypriotes, the north was where it was at! My dream is to return. Through Turkey. And to cross on the ferry. On my ... read more

Wednesday 6th July 2011 Awake at our usual time and down for breakfast and back to the room and our last packing for a while. Down to reception about 11 o'clock and pay our bill for the four nights. It was €70 per night including a good breakfast which, for a half decent hotel in the centre of a capital city, we thought was a very good price. Then made our way to the Metro station and purchased our one way airport ticket. The fare is €8 for a single and for some reason €14 for a couple. One change on the Metro which we are getting to know well and then a train all the way out to the airport. The only thing is the Metro doesn't link directly into the airport, you come out ... read more

Our 5th tour in as many days took us over to the ancient ruins of Kourion. The most impressive part of this extensive archaeological site is the luxurious house of Eustolious. This home was originally built in the early Christian period around 330-400 AD. It had and extensive layout with Roman baths, well preserved mosaics, and even stone pipes to bring water into the house. The greek writings in the tile floors also proved that this was built by a Christian family. Right next to the house was a theatre originally built in the Hellenistic period (310-30 BC) and rebuilt/expanded in the Roman period (30 BC - 330 AD). Paul and Barnabas once visited Kourion, but their most famous missionary work on the island of Cyprus was in Paphos. We made a stop to see the ... read more

NOORD-CYPRUS 30 mei 2011 t/m 6 juni 2011. Maandag 30 mei 2011. Zo, onze vakantie is begonnen.

Another adventure starts, this time the Greek Islands without a car. We have a flight booked to Iraklion, Crete, tomorrow Sunday 15th May, 2011 and the general plan is to do some ferry hopping around the Islands, with no particular itinerary in mind other than where the next ferry takes us. We have visited a number of Islands over the years and obviously hope to add some new ones to the list.... read more

After spending the night in Kyrenia, we take the local bus to Lefkoşa. Furtunately, this time we have about half a day to explore the historic Old City, its northern part, that is. We get off the bus just outside Kyrenia Gate, the most frequently used access point to the Old City. Inside, it doesn't take us long to stop at one of the many cafés/pastry shops. Realising we won't be getting this in a while, we gorge ourselves on yummy Turkish sweets, custards and puddings, and wash it all down with tea and fresh ayran. Further down the road, we pass yet another Atatürk statue and a couple of small, appealing mosques, before entering the famous Büyük Han. A rare surviving example of a medieval caravanserai (which is probably the coolest word ever), the Büyük ... read more

Towards the exit of Yenirerenköy, we pick up a hitchhiker, an old, traditional-looking man with moustache and hat. He looks a bit confused first upon seeing who has stopped for him, but when he asks "Dipkarpaz?", and we nod assertively, he gets in anyway. He says he's a "Kurdi", and that he speaks "no English, Türkçe, Türkçe!". Upon hearing I'm from Almanya, he oohs and aahs a bit and says: "Deutschland gut! Arbeit! Arbeit!" which I find kind of ironic, for I have my fair share of troubles with work in my home country. Seeing that we can't keep on saying "tamam, tamam", "evet" and "teşekkür ederim", the conversation sort of stops after that. We offer him some of our roasted chickpeas, but he just takes the open packet, looks at it for a while, says ... read more

The 'border guards' on the Greek Cypriot side only ask what our nationality is and wave us through when we tell them. We leave the Republic of Cyprus and thus the European Union. The UN Buffer Zone is lined by some surprisingly well-maintained buildings, including a German-Cypriot Culture Club, and there are tri-lingual signs saying 'No Photography'. The Turkish Cypriot 'border guards' give us a form to fill in and check our passports. We get a stamp serving as our 90-day 'visa' for the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC), a de facto independent state recognized only by Turkey. We enter Lefkoşa, or North Nicosia. After a bit of confusion and disorientation, we manage to navigate to Kyrenia Gate, one of the entrances to the Old City (well, the Northern part of it), where I exchange ... read more

When we arrive at the airport, we realize there's no petrol station, so we drive to the small nearby village of Dromolaxia. We have to ask our way to the petrol station, where we tank up and get the car washed, although I'm not sure whether the latter is really necessary. Finally, we return the car, buy the bus tickets to Nicosia, or Lefkosia, as it is locally known, and wait around until the departure. The freshly landed are a who's who of whom I'd rather not be around: there's scores of dull, tacky-looking tourists, including bald blokes wearing English football jerseys and clutching Carlsberg cans, their upper arms tattooed with the standard club crests and their forearms with those squiggly Latin dicta or their kids' and ex-wives' names, popularized by David Beckham and scores of ... read more
