I had an opportunity to visit Cyprus, the pearl of Mediterranean, in May 2002. That was for presenting a paper in an international conference, hosted jointly by the Commonwealth Science & Technology Secretariat and WAITRO. After a change of flights in Dubai I landed in Larnaca, the international port of entry for Cyprus. I headed for Paphos, a resort town in the western part of Cyprus and host city for the conference. The drive along the southern coast of the island was breathtaking with the azure blue Mediterranean Sea keeping company all along! We crossed the port city of Limassol on the way. Limassol also thrives on software development activities thus attracting a sizeable population of expatriate Indians. Smoothly weaving through the hillocks of limestone and plains growing oranges and grapes, the four-lane highway brought us ... read more

It's hard to believe that it's 22 years since we met on a training course in Cyprus. What adventures we've had since then. So, when some friends, Bev and Sno, were nearing the end of their tour on the island we took the opportunity to go and visit. We have been back in the meantime but that was about 12 years ago now and many things have changed in that time. Getting there from Spain wasn't easy and we ended up flying with British Airways via London Gatwick. It was actually cheaper than EasyJet via Milan! Our friends live on the eastern side of Cyprus. From there we were able to take a trip down to Ayia Napa to see how the former fishing village, which 20 years ago was rapidly becoming the club capital of ... read more

Amy may have been born more than 2 decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall but she got to experience some of the atmosphere from that time during our trip to north Cyprus. The island of Cyprus is split in two along the so called Green Line which divides the Turkish controlled north from the republic in the south. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) may not be recognised by any country other than Turkey but it has existed in one form or another for more than 40 years. For many years the border was closed but over time it has become easier to cross and there are now 7 crossings between the two sides of the island. We crossed at the quiet border crossing near Kato Pyrgos in the north west of the ... read more

When thinking of a destination for our Easter holiday, we wanted somewhere which offered good weather, good food, good sights and good hiking. Cyprus seemed to tick all of those boxes and so in April we found ourselves facing a 4 hour flight with Amy - we just hoped that it would be worth the journey! We started with a few days in the Paphos / Polis area. Paphos is a touristy town, but offers some interesting sights and we were glad to have a chance to explore. The archaeological site near the coast is particularly interesting, with great mosaics which have been well preserved. We also enjoyed some good hiking, with great walks in the Akamas Peninsula, which is north of Paphos. None of the hikes were too intimidating, but they were hard work in ... read more

I wasn’t all that interested in visiting Cyprus, I was basically just ticking another country off the list for my Corn Flake mission but I spent nearly 2 weeks camping and sleeping in the car and found enough to keep me entertained. It was the end of a 2 month trip which started with a month in Jordan, followed by a couple of weeks touring around Israel and Palestine and when I flew out of Tel Aviv I left feeling like a caged animal after my time in what is effectively a police state. I landed in Cyprus needing to feel free so I picked up my bag, walked straight out the airport and kept on walking until I reached the coast. Next day I did some hitching-hiking and plenty of walking so progress was ... read more

Sara and I have recently opened Aperanti Agrotourism in August 2013, an agrotourism accomodation in Cyprus in a renovated traditional stone-built house located in the picturesque village of Pera Orinis, a 15-minute drive from the Machairas mountains and a 20-minute drive from the capital Nicosia. The name Aperanti is a play on words that combines the greek word Peran ("beyond") and the philosophical word Aperantos ("infinite"), reflecting our wish to offer our guests a memorable experience that goes 'beyond' the typical holiday in Cyprus of sun & sea. By staying at Aperanti you will have the possibility not only to relax and to explore our beautiful countryside, but to "Live the Agrotourism" in Cyprus by tasting our home-made products (cheese, jams, cakes, pastries,...) and to participate in local activities (traditional h... read more

When I woke this Tuesday morning I decided to stay another day so after breakfast I grabbed my camera and headed down towards the port stopping along the way to have a look at the 13th century Ag Kyriaki Church built on the ruins of an early Byzantine Basilica, the church is still active today. I then attempted to visit the medieval fort but it closed off some type entertainment event, so I moved onto the Kato Pafos Archaeological Park which contains some wonderful Roman mosaics, an agora (market), odeon (theatre) and asklepieion (hospital) and also ruined 5th century church and Frankish castle. There are also a series of rock cut tombs, which I couldn't find initially and had given up on, till I had left the site and noticed a bus with "tombs of the ... read more

After a horrendous day yesterday, delayed flight to begin then getting stuck with a bundle of Lebanese money I cant get rid of, I then had to pay way to much for my hire car. I had no maps it was dark and it took me hours to find my guest house in Larnaka's old town. Yet today was brilliant, talked to Ruth this morning which is always nice then had an almost full English, visited the tourist office, Larnaka's old fort and Agia Lazarus before hitting the road. First I visited and old mosque on the shoreline of a dry salt lake, cats everywhere, then a pretty church in the village of Kiri. Next was an extremely old neolithic village and a impressive medieval fortress. This was followed up by some stunning Roman ruins, although ... read more

Before landing at the Istanbul airport I had spent two action-packed years in the Mediterranean. While on the island of Cyprus, basking in the glory of the Mediterranean, I regularly alternate between the Christian Greek south side and the Muslim Turkish north side. I have developed a deep feeling of affinity for the Muslim people. Particularly for the young Persians from Iran who populate the Eastern Mediterranean University. Throughout my travels I have also formed bonds with many Roma people, whom I refer to as Gypsies. It is a label they say they cherish. This last point I checked with them very carefully. I had never intended to go to Cyprus. My travel plan was to stick to the co... read more

Lynne and I have spent a couple of weeks resting and relaxing on this wonderful island where the weather has been perfect, although it is now hotting up, and the people are so friendly and helpful. We have been staying at a villa near the coastal town of Latchi which is on the North West point of West Cyprus. Both Latchi and the nearby town of Polis have a fair selection of decent restaurants and I must say Trip Advisor has been very helpful in locating the best. Most of the time has been spent relaxing around the pool at the villa and I am now on my 5th book. A swim between chapters is most refreshing. However we have not been completely lazy and we have had a few trips out in the car (which is ... read more
