I hated and and loved Egypt. I'm not sure if I hated it more than I loved it but while I didn't hate to love it, I didn't love to hate it neither. Two weeks is certainly not enough to understand this country and its population. Two years might have been better for that purpose. Would I stay two years in Egypt? Nope! Even if it would have certainly been more relaxing to be part of the 99% who cruise it in an organized tour instead of backpacking it. C'est le plus grand choc culturel que j'ai connu durant tous mes voyages et c'est exactement ce que je recherchais. Leurs moeurs sont completement differents de ce que j'ai vu ailleurs dans le monde et c'est ce qui rend les voyages interessants. What I really liked? When ... read more

We arrive in Larnaca in the evening and immediately become aware of the number of Russian speakers in the city. As my brother Ivan Kruchkoff rightly mentions in his blog it seems a lot of Russians have come here either in search for work or as a holiday destination. Generally they have come from the Baltic States. The first day in Larnaca we head to the church of Saint Lazarus. Yes based on Lazarus from the bible. So the story goes, Lazarus of Bethany became sick. Jesus heard of the news but by the time he had arrived to Bethany, Lazarus was dead. Martha, Lazarus' sister becomes upset with Jesus that Jesus let her brother die. Jesus tells Martha "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet ... read more

We finish our sight seeing of Niscosia and Northern Cyprus the next morning and grab our bags to make the pedestrian crossing into Southern cyprus. After our passports are stamped and we realise how much more expensive Southern Cyprus is compared to the North (hey we are talking euros now), we head to the ATM to withdraw. We drop off our bags with a random tobacconist/street seller and proceed with the tour of Soutern cyprus. We check out the Freedom Monument, The Classical Motorcycle Musuem and the National Struggle Museum. As the day draws to a close and the afternoon begins to turn to night we grab our bags from the random street seller and jump on the bus to Larnaca.... read more

Salamis(Famagusta) to Niscosia - Day 3 We have a really nice stay in a bead and breakfast in Famagusta where we get served delicious home made dinner - dumplings and breakfast. Yum! Surprisingly it's much better quality and cheaper then western Northern Cyprus. We make our way to Niscosia, stopping to see some churches on the way. Arriving in Niscosia we park the car in the valet parking and wait for the lessor to arrive. Ten, 20 minutes pass and there is still no sign of him. There is still no sign of him so we leave the keys with the attendant and head out for a tour of Niscosia. In the evening whilst exploring the city on my lonesom - I'm fortunate to stumble onto an exhibition by Serkan Surek.... read more

Middle East » Cyprus » Guzelyurt December 13th 2009

It’s day two of the Northern Cyprus road trip. First on the day’s agenda, seeing the sights of Guzelyurt (Morphou). First up it's the museum of Nature and Archaeology. The museum contains a collection of stuffed animals and other miscellaneous archeological finds. The museum itself was once the former palace of the Bishop of Morphou. Nearby is the Monastery of St. mamas, dedicated to St Mamas the patron saint of tax evasion. The bishop of Morphou was arrested one Easter after crossing into Northern Cyprus to perform a liturgy in the church. Following our tour of Morphou's main sights we stock up on some delicious fruits such as persimmons and head north. We pass some cute villages on the way where we have the chance to pick some delicious oranges. We head back past Kyrenia and ... read more

Our Northern Cyprus Road Trip begins with a trip out to St Hilarion castle and ends with the shiny new 2009 fiesta making funny noises from our off road trip. Day 1 we decide to explore the east side of north island. We drive visit St Hilarion Castle also known as Richard the Lionheart's castle or Walt Disney Castle. Do you think it compares to the German version in Fussen? I navigated, Ivan (brother) drives and dad sleeps. The castle is fun to explore and me and my brother take off climbing and investigating. The castle is thought to be named after a saint who escapes Jerusalem after the Arab conquest and moved to Cyprus, where he lived and died in a cave on top of the mountains. In the 10th century a church and monastery ... read more

Fortunately for us another minibus driver saw me running and asked if he could help. I told him the situation and he rang up the mini bus driver and told me that in 5 minutes I would have my bag back. 20 minutes the bag had arrived, and I joined Ivan and dad for lunch. Girnea (Kyrenia) wasn’t super big - and it was definitely possible to walk most of the city centre. The old town was really nice. We found a place to stay and set off to have a walk around the city centre. We walked past the boats and to the castle and during a delicious dinner, where I had a prawn Caesar salad we debated about taking a car for the hire the next day. Note: As I couldn't locate my photos ... read more

Well, it’s been a couple of months since I have blogged, so I am trying to think of what needs mentioning to update everyone. I suppose one of the key things to mention, is the continuing wonderful weather. There has been the odd spell of cooler times and we have seen some rain, but the average daytime temperature at the moment is about 22°C. Sitting in direct sunlight on the patio the temperature gets up to about 35°C. So we are still wearing shorts and T-shirts in the day time. The evenings are cooler and if you go out at night you really need jeans and a thicker top. The locals are wearing thick coats and jumpers, which we find slightly amusing. I don’t doubt they have their thoughts about us as well. My parents are ... read more

Cyprus is a nice little island, quite a decent mountain range in the middle and a fair bit of history to it, There is also the best bar on camp with dirt cheap beer and brandy sours to die for, or at least get pickled with! Was trying to get a container ship to take me to Israel, that was ok, but because iCame from Turkey it means it is now illegal to travel out via the south, crazy. Jumped up little shit at the port customs was telling me how the Turks took his land, he forgot to say about the money that they all get as compensation, suppose it slipped his tiny little mind. Middle East » Cyprus » Paphos September 26th 2009

The 24th September, 2009 was one year on, from when our journey started. What a wonderful year, with many and varied experiences. They say travel broadens the mind. I agreed with the sentiment before and even more so, now. We had decided to celebrate the day, by having a day out and visiting the monastery at Kykkos. Having looked at the map, we decided to go via Polis, not the most obvious route, but some of the roads in the mountains, we were not sure about. We set off just after nine, and headed North to Polis. The drive was uneventful and we headed East from Polis in the direction of Pafos forest. Our objectives, were to see Cedar valley, visit Kykkos monastery and find Archbishop Makarios’ tomb. The area is mountainous and the road is ... read more
