That’s what I remember about Wales. Grey slate, grey houses, grey landscape and grey rain. Taking into account our recent experience in Cornwall and Graeme’s derisive comments about Summer in the UK I wasn’t about to have any other expectations. It’s good to be proved wrong sometimes. The Welsh flags were fluttering proudly on the castle’s towers as we walked across the bridge to Conwy. Having some insider knowledge (I was born in Old Colwyn after all) parking away from the throng in Llandudno junction we eyed the scudding clouds. Warm and windy, no rain forecast. An amazing few days break in the weather saw us here in North Wales for my cousin’s wedding. Being a jammy devil he had had a word, I’m sure and we had the first sunny day since Spring. He commanded ... read more

Yesterday, Stuart, Kate and I made the hour and a half drive south to Northern Wales! I would say I lasted about ten minutes in the car before I fell asleep. I was astonished when I woke up, looked out the window and was staring at a stone wall of the Conwy Castle. We drove in circles around the village for a bit trying to find a "car park" or parking spot. Eventually we found one and bundled up against the Welsh wind. We walked across a bridge to get to the castle, where I got nice pictures, but we chose to continue walking through the village, rather than walk through the castle. We ducked into a few eccentric shops and made our way down to the water. I wouldn't say that the smell is one ... read more

This blog should have had some lovely photographs of Bodnant Gardens, the victorian house, the Pin Mill, the lily ponds and the summer flowering long beds however ............the battery on the camera was flat and guess who forgot to take the mobile phone to take photos. We only realised when we got there and both of us said "Well get the camera out then" How many times do you get somewhere and realise you have forgotten something. We are missing the motorhome life desperately. It has been difficult to settle in at home to the much larger living space, the bigger bed and going back to normality and work. We spent the first week cleaning Suzy out. How many stones can you bring in to a motorhome on your shoes?. We had tried to keep her tidy ... read more

Hello from Wales Another few days have passed since the last blog and we are now in North Wales in a lovely little village set in the mountains near Snowdonia so it is quite cold and very rainy!! We arrived yesterday afternoon after a lovely couple of days in the Peak District, Derbyshire in a village called Asford-in - water, beautiful countryside, not that we have seen any that isn't, we even did a 18 mile push bike ride along an old dis-used railway line to blow a few cobwebs away and hopefully shed a few extra pounds!! We met up with Katherine and Bryan yesterday at Betwsy and because of the rain we found ourselves at the nearest pub catching up on what we had been doing over the last week over a few ales ... read more

Excuse the deceiving place. That's not actually where we are. It's a wild guess and is around 100 miles off I believe. Sorry, also, for the long wait. It's been a while since we had internet, and when we did I squandered my time... So here's the story. Tuesday, July 19. Our campground ordered us a taxi to a train station, and we took the train into London to the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. We spent nearly 3 hours inside the Tower of London, looking at the different exhibits, along with various armour pieces and torture devices. Once that was done it was past lunchtime, so we got ourselves some fish and chips from a stand. It was absolutely fantastic. I hope the fish&chips trend catches on in N. America. We catch a ... read more

The following day was mainly a driving day. We headed into Wales and this meant we would get a break from heritage sites – our card was only for England and we were too tight to pay to see anything else. Not too tight, though, to try and avoid the toll bridge from Cornwall to Wales – we're talking an extra 4 hours on the trip. We were in Wales. Not a lot different to England, this southern part – pretty country, lots of pubs called the Red Lion - save that the BBC Cymru station was in Welsh – truly a wacky language. Somebody needs to donate these people some vowels. We made our way to the coast and found ourselves in the tiny town of Newgale. The name was appropriate – the wind was ... read more

...follow every rainbow 'till you find your dream...

Today we started on our journey to Holyhead to catch the ferry to Ireland. We set off from Carrie's to drive to Llangollen to meet up with Mike Thompson's daughter Liz and her boyfriend, Dave for lunch. We had a lovely drive to Llangollen and funnily enough Liz and Dave pulled in to the car spot right beside us!! After an enjoyable lunch and lots of chatting we all went for a stroll around Llangollen. Llangollen is a very pretty place situated on a river. There is also a steam train station there and a canal. I was very excited to see that there were horse drawn long canal boats on the canal and that we were just in time to enjoy a ride!! It was lovely, riding down the canal, and so peaceful. All you ... read more

I'm not in Betws-y-coed, but close by - the Tyn-y-coed in Capel Curig. Have just added a map to this entry. Wish there was a way to highlight the bits that are driving as opposed to the bits that are hiking. Guess I'll have to leave that to your powers of deduction, if there's no road, it's probably hiking ;-) So, the day dawned with patchy sunshine and cloud dangling on the hills at about 1800ft. Every summit on today's trek is above 2000ft so there's likely to be some navigation in cloud. But I set off with confidence high that the forecast will be right and the clouds will either lift or burn off by midday. 9am start from Bethania and I'm following the trail known as the Watkin path - a "round the back" ... read more

Llandudno We were told that breakfast would be provided between 9 and 10 at weekends at Flockton Villa Hotel. The Flocken Villa stands on Goddaeth Street, a convenient location both for the town centre and coastline. It was rather chilly, cloudy and windy in Llandudno on Sunday morning. We walked on the pier, and popped in several souvenir shops. The tidal waves were quite high and choppy around Llandudno. Great Orme While walking on the pier, we decided to go to Great Orme. The tram station was situated among the residential houses. I was interested in the signposts in Welsh and English, and asked Mark whether he can pronounce letters as well as English. The tram arrived at the station on time. The cars appeared typically Victorian, and it matched with the buildings in Llandudno. After ... read more
