Ahh, the pace of the last few days sure has been different to what we've been used to on tour! It's certainly different to having Matt and Nico to babysit us and take us safely from place to place - but lots of fun all the same! The day after our tour finished (so, two days ago) we made our way to Heathrow via the tube (having sucessfully negotiated the Paris metro we are now qualified to handle any metro system in the world, apparently). We had a fairly uneventful flight to Inverness, although I couldn't help but crack up laughing when we landed...and I saw that the airport is surrounded by empty paddocks! It was just such a change from what we've been up to - Rome, Paris, London and then it was like we ... read more

Well, its been a little while since I've had a chance to log on and bore you all with another installment of what I've been up to - so sit back and relax, this could take a while.. It seems like the last couple of weeks have absolutely flown by. Our wonderful Contiki tour manager Matt did mention that 16 days would go by quite qickly, and he wasn't kidding! We finished our Contiki tour yesterday - I would never have thought that I'd actually be disapointed to see London, but I've had so much fun I really didn't want the tour to end. Although, its probably a good thing that we didnt go for too much longer - good to end while most people were all still on friendly terms! I'm having trouble remembering exactly ... read more

Less than 24 hours after landing in Manchester our winged silver (leather-clad) chariot arrived to wisk us up to Braemar in the fairly far north of Scotland for a merger of Shell and BP. Suffice to say it was a great day in a great location, and we wish the happy couple all the best for the future ... ... Here are some more photos.... read more

Got up reasonably early, stuffed myself silly on the free Scottish breakfast complemented by the sweet Scottish lady: "D'ye fancy a cooked breakfas', dearie?" and then voyaged out into the rain (of course this is Tacoma-style rain, not Hawaii downpour). Beautiful train ride, all sheep and green green hillsides, budding trees and awesome cloud formations. Still didn't catch the ferry till noon-ish, and then sacrificed my Hawaii-Mexico acclimated extremities to my desire to see the view. Arran did the total movie-ish rising out of the mist like the answer to a quest, and nobody was more exicted to get off that boat and into the hills than me. I took a different bus than the one I wanted, and have never been so happy to be on the wrong bus. It looped around the northern coast, ... read more

Well. The adventure is off to a rocky start. I was completely stupid on several counts and am now in Bergamo airport, hoping against hope that I can get my standby flight to Newcastle, three hours after I was expecting to be in Glasgow. I will be on the plane when I wanted to be on the train to Glencoe. At least if I get this flight, they wont charge me another 60 euro. Oh well, learning experience. Remember when I said I had managed to not get into any more scrapes. I think this counts as a Scrape. By the way, a taxi ride from Milano to Bergamo on a non-Easter weekend day is normally forty minutes, and about 70 euro. On Good Friday, it is an hour and fifteen minutes, and 85 euro. Thats ... read more

Being my first visit to Stirling, I didn't know what to expect. I live about 45 minutes away from the place and have never really thought that it would be a very interesting place to see. Sure I knew about the castle and the Wallace monument, but to be honest, the thought of visiting never really occured to me before. As it was a sunday, and the first slightly mild one we have had for a while(after Scotlands recent arctic weather) and my oldest daughter getting over a tummy bug, the family decided it was time to blow of the cobwebs and get out again. How we decided on Stirling, i'm not quite sure, but I'm glad we did. The town centre is pretty easy to drive into and the first thing we couldn't help but ... read more

Spent five wonderful days in the city of Glasgow. I went to visit my friend Jacqueline who goes to the uni of North Texas as well. She worked in the study abroad office there and it was scary how much we have in common. I arrived on Wednesday afternoon and it was a beautiful train ride up there. It had been snowing and everything looked picturesque. The green hilly land was covered in snow and there were sheep everywhere. I was going to attempt to get some work done, but I couldn’t stop looking out of the window! Jac meet me at the train station and we headed to her uni. I really loved Strathaclyde and it was in the middle of the big city. I could see myself studying at her uni. The first night ... read more

Caught up with Brendan Laney after driving up from London (about 9 hours in total) we stayed the night just out of Leeds. Cold and wet. Couldn't make the most of it because of weather. Will definitely return.... read more

Scotland: lots and lots of sheep! It was nice to see, but i wasn't incredibly impressed, because the city came across as being quite grubby (for some reason it reminded me of NYC). We spent 2 days there and walked the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle (the crown jewels are there, as is the National War Museum, and the "One O'Clock Gun" which was just a canon being fired.) We walked by the Walter Scott monument and down to Holyrood Palace, which is the Queen's official residence in Scotland.... read more

So Id booked myself onto a 4 day PP bus tour to Edinburgh for Hegemony. Sis Merrett was going to come along, but ended up having to work instead. All her flatmates came up on one of the other buses though, and 2 of them were tour leaders, so it was sweet. Didn’t matter anyway, as I was on the double decker bus, with about 50 other Kiwi’s and Aussies, so made a bunch of mates pretty quickly. 30-12-04 Early start at Paddington, then we were off on our 9 hour journey to Edinburgh. Didn’t really hit the booze on the way up, only one toilet and I didn’t want to peak early either. Crew in the back seat started in from the start though, (they knew each other from Beerfest, so had had some practice!) ... read more
