Date: 09.09.2004 Destination: Edinburgh, Scotland Day: 6 We reached Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland at 6am after a very uncomfortable 7 hours bus ride. Everywhere was cold and foggy. It was so windy and cold, just 11 degree, that we just stayed in the bus station for an hour... Then, we start to search for our hostel. As we were walking along Princes Road, one can see how amazing Edinburgh is. It is divided into the Old Town and the New Town by a long garden in the middle. Very constrasting. The Old Town is rows and rows of centuries old building just separated by small alleys ending with the Edinburgh Castle on top of them. In constrast, the New Town is extra-modern. The buildings here are prefectly placed and.. just look new. The hostel was ... read more

Early September may not be the best time to visit Edinburgh but it isn’t the worst either. Especially, if the mist can get two women from climbing upto Arthur’s Seat (which is the highest point in the Scottish Capital). So off we went -Sudeep and me and friends of ours from US. Took us four hours from London’s Kings X to Edinburgh Waverly and the journey was beautiful - along the coast just as we neared Edinburgh. Lovely old houses at the edge of cliffs, golf courses, cathedrals and general hustle bustle of everyday life. Of course, with my weekly jaunts to York - half the journey was quite predictable. The Yanks of course, could not get over the countryside and the lovely, ‘small’ houses! Once at the Scottish Capital, we took a short cab ride ... read more

Greetings from bonnie Scotland!!! We have had a crazy couple of days, although it has been a blast. After I wrote last we ordered some traditional fish and chips for supper and went to bed - I have NEVER been that tired. We went to bed at like 7:30. Worse than mom!!! :) The next morning we ate the rest of our fries for breakfast and sat with a very friendly Swiss guy who asked "do Canadians always eat chips for breakfast?" Yeah, it was funny. After that, we check out of our castle and took a very crazy cab ride down to the shore of Loch Lomond to this place called Sweeney's Tours, and hopped on a boat which took us on a really neat tour around the loch. We passed a whole bunch of ... read more

And here we are, in lovely Edinburgh. Unfortunetly, we still have yet to see lovely Edinburgh in the light of day, as due to complications with our alarm clock yesterday, circumstances arose which made us unable to take and early train ride here. We arrived in the city at around 12:00 last night, and then had to wait about 20 minutes for a taxi... THe city was really pretty in the dakr, so I would imagine that it will be even prettier when I can see everything. The last few days have been crazy. We have done so much in the last three days. When we woke up after that hellish day off of the plane, we felt SOOOO much better, you have no idea. So we decided to go on this boat ride that was ... read more

We can all visit the Egyptian Pyramids, Ayers Rock, Niagra Falls and bungee 102m in Queenstown, and we are all capable of taking photos of the sights and describing the experience to bored/jealous friends and family but I suppose it is the little things one notices and does that makes each travellers experience unique and stories interesting.  So in this journal I don't want to boast all the time, now and again I will tell you about silly or funny moments that will hopefully make you chukle at the computer screen.  So please humour me as I go off on a tangent.  I would appreciate any feedback - if its bad I will just delete it anyway - but I will take on board you comments! Check back again soon!!!  ... read more

Well, we made it over the big blue ocean. The airplane was okay, there was a whole bunch of turbulance so by time we reached 41000 ft I was feeling pretty much done in. The food was "chicken" stir fry - in quotations because thats what they were calling it, but one could argue that it was not really chicken... Customs at the airport took forever, but we finally made it out and took a bus into Glasgow, the whole time I was repressing the urge to run to the bus driver and yell "You're on the wrong side of the road!!!!". It is so amazingly pretty here - everything is lush and green because it does nothing but rain. Sarah and I were both soaked to the bone by time we finally got to our ... read more

All I can say is HOLY CRAP!!!! I cant believe we are finally here. It took bloody well long enough (look the language is seeping through already!) anyway, the plan is that Jackie and I will both be writing on this, about the same stuff so dont be surprised if lots of the journals are similar due to the fact that we share a brain. Back to the Europe thing. Well, we are outside of Glasgow in this wicked awesome castle which in actuallity is probably older than most of our country. To sum up how I am feeling right now..... cold..... I did enough walking today to last me for the entire trip. and it rained the whole time....go figure. oh well... the point is however, that i am is scotland. I have honestly never ... read more

Hello to all my family, friends and colleagues that have been putting up with my constant ranting about travelling since I caught the travel bug a year ago in Canada. I have booked a six week trip away for the summer holidays (winter in NZ & OZ), I leave on 1st July 2004. It is my aim to keep you all updated on my where abouts and antics while leaving myself a wee reminder to browse when I am back at work and wishing myself away once more. Hopefully I will be able to post some photos up here aswell. You will also have the chance to post messages on here for me to see and answer while I am away - this should be much easier than trying to send and reply to emails. Bubye ... read more

We are currently touring bonnie Scotland. Our first port of call was Loch Lomond, which was stunning. The scenery around there is lovely. We went on several walks. It is surprising warm here so Laura took a paddle in the loch. After that we headed to Fort William via Glen Coe. Did lots more walks en route. We then headed around Loch Ness keeping an eye out for the monster at all times! We finished our tour by going to Crinan, which is a tiny village on the west coast. Again there was lovely scenery and more walks.... read more

Roaming the Ancient Sites and Old Villages of England and Scotland PART 2 Contact me if you are interested in photos at stonehag2004@yahoo.com. Chapter 7—Lancaster & The Lake District Again, reluctant to leave, I headed to Lancaster, where my friend Don so generously invited me to take a few days break at his house. This drive was about four hours on the M5 motorway, my first time on UK’s “freeway.” It went amazingly well. I noticed the same things about drivers here as on the smaller roads—they drive faster than we do, but I didn’t see drivers cutting people off, tailgating, weaving lanes or going slow in the fast lane. Another wonderful thing is that there are almost no SUVs here! No full-size pickup trucks! It was heavenly. The only large vehicles are commercial. There were ... read more
