Hi everyone! So, I have safely arrived in Scotland. The flight was long and I didn't sleep at all. It was nice and quiet though, which was nice considering there was a 5 year old boy in front of me. I watched episodes of The Office and Two and a Half Men on the headrest and the movie Definitely, Maybe, which was really cute. I also was able to see my plane track across the Atlantic on a map on the headrest. I watched the sunrise out of my window, and I swear you can see the curve of the Earth from 39,000 feet. As we flew over the UK, the cloud cover was so dense I couldn't see land. I was getting anxious and nervous - feeling like I made a mistake and was going ... read more

Hello everyone...good to hear all is ok back home....which seems a long way off right now! It is 9.15 am here in Stirling and I am at the tourist info place. I will be heading up to Edinburgh later and will be going to the Tattoo tonight....hopefully anyway because they have predicted heavy rain tonight! Had some lovely surprises in Stirling....I was met by two friends when I got here who took me out for a drive in the afternoon and then to tea that night. Yesterday I bought a ticket on the hop on hop off bus and went out to the Wallace monument. It is a huge tower and I climbed the 246 steps to the top....great views but you know me with heights!...I was glad to get down. Then I rang another friend ... read more

Well, long day of travel, but great scenery in Scotland. We were up at 6:30 and off to the airport by the city bus for our flight to Liverpool, England. Got in at about 10:30 and got our rental car at Hertz. They screwed us over, though, by charging us an extra $200 that what we have on our email confirmation--and not for insurance or anything, just the price. Whatever. Anyway, we did not make the drive over to Bangor, Wales--just not enough time even though it was not too far out of the way. We hit the road to go north and made pretty good time. Drove a bit out of the way to see a section of Hadrian's Wall, but there is not much to it for the most part anymore. Great views of ... read more

I know it's been a while, but due to internet issues and software issues with my camera, I haven't been able to update until now. So, not long after my last post, Katie and I headed up to Stirling to see the castle during our afternoon off. Stirling has been my favorite for years now, ever since the first time I saw it nearly 7 years ago. I found that I'm as much in love with it as ever. Katie left two days later to return to the States, and is currently in Poland for two weeks. After Katie left, I had one more week at the Stone's house. The boys and I went to visit the Kelvingrove Art Museum, which had an excellent photography exhibit on at the time. I got bored one afternoon and ... read more

Well, that was a fabulous cruise - apart from the extravagant cost (I paid 4 times the amount the people in the cabin opposite me paid and they had an additional £150 upgrade!) - I found out that the cost is directly proportional to my ability to bargain and not to do it in a travel agent but on the net - I live and (hopefully) learn! So, flew into Edinburgh on Friday 4th at 7am, dumped my BLOODY heavy suitcase in the train lockup (£12!!!) and walked the Royal Mile and got the obligatory photo outside Edinburgh castle with the guard on duty (how they must be SO bored with that) and did the national Museum, had a soup and roll, collected the BLOODY heavy suitcase and headed via bus to the Ocean Terminal where ... read more

20 June - Friday 20th June 2008: We decided to use the hop-on hop-off bus, rather than the car, to travel around Stirling as it stopped at all the places we wished to visit and it also gave us a scenic tour of the rest of the town. The township of Stirling is your typical English/Scottish town; the old parts of it are full of incredibly, narrow winding streets but more modern buildings, shopping centres and malls tend to dominate the renovated portions of the city. We turned the corner to the street containing the bus stop only to see the bus (which was supposed to leave in ten minutes time) start up and disappear into some of the narrower streets. As the stop was outside the tourist centre we went in and asked what was ... read more

Ever seen the movie "Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail"? Well some of the scenes from the movie were shot at Doune Castle which is located just outside of Stirling. Since the fine ladies at Stirling University move at a snail's pace when it comes to getting chapbooks for me to use, I decided to take a morning and head on over to Doune to check things out. My Scottish tour guide had told me that they give out free coconuts for you to bang (if you've seen the film you should understand the reference) which in all honesty was reason enough for me to go check it out hahaha Caught the bus from downtown Stirling - rickety old thing and filled with old people. I was the only person on the bus ... read more

Has been another interesting couple of days. Weather has continued to be absolutely beautiful - sunny, warm and NO RAIN! YESSS! Yesterday I had grand plans to see Edinburgh Castle and Camera Obscura amongst other sites. Instead stayed in, marked essays and after a bit went to the Meadows to check out the music festival going on with Carlo, the janitor at the hostel (he was from Naples) and Dominik (a 50 year old South African dude). It was really fun and some of the bands were fantastic! So after sun bathing for a while headed back to the hostel and decided to go out for dinner and a tour around town with Karine, Steve and Derek. The Aussie tried to meander his way in but we sort of left without him... whoops! Because Derek was ... read more

Yesterday I woke up early to see Kathy off. Tonight Harriet and Colleen are taking the over night bus to London to catch their flight in the morning. God, I love public transportation :) I spent yesterday just hanging out mostly. I cleaned up the flat and checked with the porter about some damages in my room. The good news is the window handle that David accidentally pulled off one night is not an individual occurance. Supposedly a lot of windows have had this happen, so I don't get charged :) And the ridiculously bad paint job that chipped off in huge chunks when I pulled pictures off the wall has been happening a lot too. I couldn't have asked for all of that to work out any better. I got a little worried yesterday because ... read more

I suppose it just wouldn't be right if each year didn't get a little bit more difficult in my five year long battle against the evil company. In February, about a week before I left for Scotland, I called my HR contact to see if my position might still be open this summer. Unfortunately, I received this email about two days later: Dear Prospective Intern, Thank you for your interest in participating in the Summer Internship Program. We will be undergoing substantial global restructuring, reshaping, and repositioning of its organization in the upcoming months. We regret to inform you that due to the many complexities of this global process, the organization will not be in a position to sponsor and support a summer internship program in 2008. Once again, we appreciate your interest in Maersk Inc. ... read more
