Hello, lovely people! I hope everyone has enjoyed their weekend thus far. I have to start by saying happy birthday to one of my favorite little men in the whole world. My wee nephew Cooper turns three tomorrow, and while I'm so so sad to be missing his mickey mouse themed birthday party today, Skype is a wonderful tool and I was able to see all of the party shenanigans. Rylynn always likes to take the phone and sit and talk with me about various things, and we always have interesting conversations. You learn a lot from a 5 year old. This week was another somewhat quiet week. My class this week was cancelled, and since I only have one class that means that I had no class at all for the entire week. It's a ... read more

Good evening/good afternoon, lovely people! I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and preparing for a lovely new week that lies ahead. This week has been filled with a lot of down time for me, as I did not really have anything planned and so I stayed in Stirling for the week and this weekend. So even though I didn't really go anywhere this week, I'll still share my week with all of you because it's always a highlight of my week to write this blog and to keep you all informed :) We started our new classes for the second block this week, and since I only have class on Tuesdays I had a lot of time to do as I please, which I always enjoy. I know you're all thinking that I actually don't ... read more

On Saturday, June 20th, I went with a few friends to explore the big hill that overlooks the University of Stirling campus, known as Dumyat Hill. We had no idea what path to take to make it to the top, so we pretty much decided to make our own. A case of American arrogance, I guess! We started off on a path, but that eventually led us to the middle of a sheep pasture. After hopping the barbed wire fence of the pasture, we just started walking uphill figuring we would eventually find a trail that leads to the top. That took a little longer than we thought it would. After walking along steep ridges and making our way through little valleys created by streams (not to mention a lot of angry stares from confused sheep) ... read more

Yesterday I got to have the amazing experience of celebrating my 21st birthday in Scotland! Luckily it was nice weather and the group here at Stirling all went out to explore the city and pick up some groceries. There was a bicycle race going on in Stirling which was pretty cool to watch, and the streets of the city were exactly how I pictured an old Scottish town. In the evening, I was able to go out to one of the bars in Stirling with a group of new friends I've met here to celebrate. Most of them are from the University of Kansas, and it was really cool how willing everyone was to celebrate with me even though I had just met them! It was definitely a birthday to remember. My first class is tomorrow, ... read more

After about 8 hours and 30 minutes on a plane, I've finally arrived at the University of Stirling! It is an absolutely beautiful campus, and is also quite large. It seems like there will be plenty to do, and it won't be hard to catch a bus into the main town of Stirling from campus. Tonight we have a reception (at the castle on campus) where everyone from the study abroad program will get to meet each other. I attached some photos from some of the walking I did around campus when I first arrived, and there's still much more to see!... read more

Geo: 56.1194, -3.93588Wed been spoiled with excellent weather over the weekend. However today, bank holiday Monday was not to follow suit. Rain, wind and cold awaited us as we left the Holiday Inn around 9.30. The main attraction of the day would be Sterling Castle. New to all four of us on this roadtrip. Similar to Edinburgh, Sterling castle towers over the town on an imposing cliff ledge. Once inside its walls, we elected to join a free guided tour around the castle grounds. This guide was absolutely excellent. Well spoken and easy to understand (unlike many Scots to Australian ears), and an absolute wealth of information. We explored courtyards, Royal Apartments, the chapel of the coronation of Mary Queen of Scots, the Great Hall, museums and vaults. Despite the persistent rain we still managed to ... read more

After four days in Edinburgh it was definiatly time to get out of the city, so we hired a car in search of Loch's, Scottish Seas and Vaughn's new found hero William Wallace (he's dead btw). Driving out of Edinburgh deserves a blog entry all in itself, but I will refrain... After an awesome cooked brekkie with the Cuzzies (thanks Zoe you are amazing!) we headed towards our first destination Stirling. We found Stirling Castle up on the hill and loe and behold a statue of William Wallace which started Vaughn off on his mission to learn everything and anything about the guy that fought for the independance of Scotland from British rule. If you would like to know more, watch Braveheart....but apparently this is not a good interpretation of what really happened so Vaughn tells ... read more

We woke up early to a nice half sunny half cloudy day, after a quick breakfast we set off to Stirling to get our guided tour of the old town jail. We were greeted at the door by a grumpy old warden who lead the very funny but informative tour around the lower level cells in the jail. After some free time to wander around ourselves we went upstairs to see the upper level cells where a female tour guide showed us around. The tour explained the old jail times when men, women and children were all imprisoned and the female prisoners were responsible for cooking, cleaning, laundry and sewing within the jail while male prisoners were kept in their cells aprat from a 15 minute exercise time on the roof. The jail got deemed the ... read more
