This morning, I woke up early to say goodbye to Nick. He's the first of our group to return to the states. The rest of us aren't really leaving until the end of the week, but Nick was by far ready to go home. It's funny to think that I never would have spoken to him if we had just been at school, but I think all of us were trying to find a spot for ourselves when we first arrived, and familiar faces- no matter how distant they may have been while at Clark- offered some much needed comfort at the beginning of the semester. Over this past weekend, I think I've prepared myself to go home. There are a lot of things that I will miss, but I'd like to have some actual summer ... read more

It is that time next month, time to get ready to head back to Texas. It's going to be extremely difficult. I'm far from being disappointed that I came to Scotland- I'm anything but. At the same time though, I've found a spot for myself again, and now I have to leave it. It's so much like being at school and having to go back to Texas, and then being at home and having to leave for school. These last three years have really been a continuing cycle of wanting to be in a different place no matter where I am at the moment, and now there's another place to add to the mix. The man that I've met here, David, is going to be especially hard to leave. He's become a big part of my ... read more

Spent the last couple of days in the South of Scotland. Went and saw the Castle in Stirling - had an excellent audio tour. Striling castle is where the Scottish royalty spent most of their time for about 500 years. Went to Edinburgh the next day. Loved the city - all hills and nooks and cranny's. Did a cool tour of 'Mary's Gate Close' which is part of the old town on the side of 'The Rock' and 'Royal Mile' near Edinburgh castle that was built (straight) on top of a couple of hundred years ago, and has only just been recently re-discovered - right under the buildings of the Royal mile. Also did a tour of Edinburgh castle. Audio wasn't as good, but the sense of the ages this place has been around is amazing ... read more

Hi All, Been a few days - been staying at B&B's with no internet the last few days. Also, did an entry last friday, then forgot to hit the 'Publish' button at the end :) Surprise surprise, didn't spot Nessie, so no fame and fortune there - did find a 'fiver' on the path whilst out for a walk though, so that was a bonus. Had a quick look at Urquhart castle on the loch (couldn't come at the 10 pounds ($25 bucks?) to actually walk into the ruins.) then travelled over to the Isle of Skye. Stopped in Kyle before we crossed over - Kyle is the equivalent of San Remo before you cross over to Phillip Is. at home - and went on a 2 hour trip on a glass bottomed boat. There's some ... read more

A new Scottish friend of mine said to me the other day, "this time next month you'll be getting ready to leave." It was a painful reminder that my time in Scotland is coming to an end. Over the last couple of years, I've become more accustom to endings- school semesters ending, summer internships ending, etc. Leaving things has become a little easier with a hardened heart, but I think being in Scotland may be one of the most challenging things in my life to allow to come to an end because I realize that there is a small chance that I will return or even end up living here permanently. And yes, life is all about choices, so if I chose to come back and live here, I could, but at what cost? I'm thrilled ... read more

It's been pretty busy here getting back into the swing of things and recouperating after Spring Break. I intended to write a day by day synopsis of our trip for posterity's sake but just haven't gotten around to it. And last night I started thinking and realized that remembering everything was getting a little difficult, so I need to start writing it down. And of course- like my Mom said last night- we'll have to plan a big scrapbooking party for when I get back. This week is the last week of classes. It's so surprising to think that things are coming to an end. I almost don't want to leave! Almost :) But it will be nice to get back home and go back to school in the fall- there are some people that I ... read more

One more class (my history seminar) and then I'm packing like mad and doing laundry so that I can leave tomorrow morning for Italy! It's definitely been a stressful week, but I'm finally done with all of my work. I just need to get ready for a week long vacation :) Last night I realized that very little had been done in the way of planning our trip. Amanda came and let me know that she was only going to be travelling until Tuesday and then heading back to school. Knowing that all of the reservations and planning was going to have to be done today, it dawned on me that we were planning on movie to a new place each night, and after this week, I'm just not up for that. So our revised plan ... read more

A Tale of a Castle, a Jail and a Bridge After returning from Dublin, I decided to embark upon another journey, but this one was much shorter and much closer to Edinburgh: Stirling. Stirling is about an hour from Edinburgh by train and has played an important role in Scottish history, which tied into many of the places that I visited while in Stirling. It also ended up being a very pretty area, so I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Looking for the Castle After getting off the train, I found myself at the Stirling train station with no idea where the castle was, but luckily, I soon found signs pointing the way. However, at the same time, my wonderful sense of direction kicked in and instead of heading towards the castle, I somehow ended up ... read more

I'm slowly getting through two essays, one of which is due on Tuesday and the other on Wednesday, before leaving on Friday at 3:45 AM to catch a flight in Glasgow to Rome for the beginning of Spring Break. We had a fire alarm go off last night at 4:30, and somehow this justified my sleeping until 1:30 this afternoon. But I've written about half of my first essay, the one due on Tuesday, and although I've done a lot of reading for my history essay, I'm not quite sure if I have all of my information together yet (but at least that one is only 1,000 words instead of 2,000 like the crime essay!). Anyways, at 3 today, Amanda, Nick, and I are meeting to go over where exactly we're going on spring break. So ... read more
