It's the weekend! This past week was pretty busy, so it was nice to finally get to sleep in this morning :) Lots of reading to do today (I've made a pretty good dent in my criminology reading), laundry, and then I think I'm going over to the William Wallace Monument as long as the weather stays nice. It's actually not too windy here today, but the last couple of days have been pretty vicious. Here are some more pictures from the last two weeks: ... read more

There's so much to catch up on! I just got a new computer today b/c the dinosaur kicked the bucket on the second night I was here. But anyways, it's a Toshiba, light weight, will play my UK version of Pretty Woman and my three US DVDs I brought along, has a great webcam (hint, hint), and goes along really fast. So much has happened, and only in the last week- I've started classes, I've been into town almost everyday, I've met another Texan, drank Scottish beers, found a favorite pub (called The William Wallace), I've had drinks bought for me by skeezing Scottish men, and I've even eaten fish and chips (don't try the burgers...). I've met my flatmates, and they're both pretty awesome. Sara is the sweetest girl ever- she's from Edinburgh and a ... read more

I'm here in Scotland! Today's the first day of classes, and I'm just posting a short entry in between. My computer kicked the bucket on Monday, but once that gets all worked out, I'll write more. Hope you all are doing well! Miss you :)... read more

Howdy everybody! Sorry I haven't updated in a while. This weekend was really fun. Me and two of my friends went to the small city of Stirling. Stirling is about an hour bus ride out of Edinburgh and is famous for two things, the Stirling Castle and the William Wallace Monument. Me and my two friends left Edinburgh by bus early on Saturday morning. We ate some sandwiches on the bus and got into Stirling an hour later. The day was perfect, not a cloud in the sky and the weather in the mid 40's. The bus dropped us off at the bus station and we asked about how to get to the Wallace Monument (the monument is about 5 miles away from the city center and we had to take a bus.) After a quick ... read more

Two weekends ago we took a drive out to Stirling, and went to Stirling Castle - the residence of the Stewart Kings and Queens of Scotland in the 16th century. The castle sits high on Castle Hill, with three of its sides having sheer drops down the cliff, which made it easily defendable. From the top of the castle there are 360 degree views of all of Stirling, including the King's Knot, Wallace national monument and the River Forth. Last weekend we headed to Perth for an afternoon, and did a bit of shopping. It ended up being a long day however, as both ways we were stuck in traffic for over an hour due to roadworks on the Forth Road Bridge! Next weekend we are off again - taking a trip north to Loch Ness ... read more

Continuing on with the castle theme from yesterday, today I caught the train from Edinburgh to Stirling to visit Stirling Castle. This is a castle that is steeped in history - politically it was one of the most important castles in Scotland and has been the site of many battles. Stirling is in the middle of Scotland, just before the highlands - so it was seen by many invaders as the gateway to Scotland - if you held the castle, you held Scotland. My train trip to Stirling lasted about an hour. It is a pretty little town and I made my way up the hill to the castle entrance. On my way, I stopped in at Argyll's Lodging - a nobleman's residence that is on the road to the castle. This mansion has been restored ... read more

Ahh, the Wallace Monument. Visible from just about everywhere in Stirling, on campus, and from the surrounding area. 286 stair steps to the top, and that's AFTER you hike up to the top of that hill. My journey began yesterday (September 19, Wednesday) at about 3:30. I was supposed to go hill-climbing/hiking with another international student, but she discovered she had somewhere to be at 4:30. It was such a nice day, however, that I decided to go myself. Only I took the wrong road (naturally) and found myself heading away from the one hill and straight towards the other. "Oh well," I thought. "I wanted to go up to the monument anyway. Might as well be today!" So onward I went. It's only about a ten minute walk (going very slowly) from campus to the ... read more

On Monday I had a five-hour break between my two classes, so instead of going back to the flat and goofing off (as I will undoubtedly do for the remainder of the semester) I decided to stay on campus and goof off. I wanted to walk all the way around the loch. I had walked about half of it previously, but was eager to see the whole thing. Unfortunately, it was gray and chilly. The walk was still pleasant, however! I read somewhere that the entire campus grounds take up 310 acres, but I'm not sure whether that includes the campus buildings or not. Either way, it's a lovely place. Green lawn, trees, aquatic plans bordering the loch, and ducks everywhere. And seagulls. And squirrels. That's about as exotic as the wildlife gets here, I'm afraid! ... read more
