Edinburgh Castle
Cool shot at night. Notice how light the sky is? It was about 10:30 or 11:30 when we took this shot. Has been another interesting couple of days. Weather has continued to be absolutely beautiful - sunny, warm and NO RAIN! YESSS!
Yesterday I had grand plans to see Edinburgh Castle and Camera Obscura amongst other sites. Instead stayed in, marked essays and after a bit went to the Meadows to check out the music festival going on with Carlo, the janitor at the hostel (he was from Naples) and Dominik (a 50 year old South African dude). It was really fun and some of the bands were fantastic!
So after sun bathing for a while headed back to the hostel and decided to go out for dinner and a tour around town with Karine, Steve and Derek. The Aussie tried to meander his way in but we sort of left without him... whoops! Because Derek was a sushi virgin it was decided that we would go for sushi at a place down the street next to Greyfriar's Pub. The sushi was really good - about 8.50 pound for a plate of 4 nigiri (salmon and tuna) and 8 maki pieces mixed with both.
After dinner we headed on over to St. Cuthbert's cemetery at the base of Edinburgh
St. Cuthbert's
Located at the base of Edinburgh Castle - complete with creepy old cemetery. Castle to take some pictures. Had some really great shots come out including a "Charlie's Angels" one with Karina, me and Derek and a creepy statue one. I posted up a couple of mine but Steve's are much better. I'll have to add them once I get them. All in all was a really great night though. A perfect last day/night in Edinburgh!
This morning I woke up and checked out then went on over to see the Camera Obscura exhibit. It was REALLY cool! Took some neat shots of the "Infinite Light" corridor (see pics). The actual Camera Obscura is a mirror that projects an image onto this concave table so you get a live feed of whatever is going on outside the tower. The way the thing is set up you can actually pick people up off the street in your hands and put them back down. It's incredibly neat and I'd highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Edinburgh!
Didn't end up going to the castle as I didn't have enough time so I headed back to the hostel said my goodbyes and got to the train station just in time to see the train
Steve
The South African photographer doing his thing. leave. Awesome. After speaking with one of the conductors, she told me to get on this other train and take it to Falkirk Hill, get off there and catch a bus to Stirling. Decided to trust her - worst idea ever! Got off at Falkirk Hill and ended up totally stranded as the bus doesn't go to Stirling from there. Great. Had plans to meet Scott to see Doune Castle and stuff - he was already waiting at the station. Double shit. So called him and being the awesome gentleman Scot he is he offered to come pick me up. Huzzah! So got a ride to Stirling from him but on the way we stopped over at the field where they shot the battle scene in Monty Python Holy Grail.
The field was incredibly awesome and came complete with SHEEP! We climbed all the way to the top with me taking pictures of sheep all the way. Oh my god what a climb! At the top it was literally vertical. Apparently 450 meters according to my tour guide so double the height of Arthur's Seat almost. Whew! Well worth it once we got to the top though and took
a look around. Spectacular view!
There was also a haunted house at the bottom of the hill where people have seen the ghost of this lady who was killed there by the English (apparently she harboured Bonnie Prince Charlie and hid him or something like that so they hung her on a tree in her front yard). Didn't have time to go check it out though as it was getting late and we were both famished. Headed into town instead via the Wallace Monument and got dinner at a little pub place.
I'm now in Willy Wally's with six other girls in my room. It's apparently the James Bond themed room with all the beds being named after a Bond girl. I'm "Xena Ontopia" apparently... fantastic hahaha
So am in Stirling now - alive and looking to get back to chapbooking tomorrow.
