Geo: 57.2725, -5.73323Our B&B in Ft. William was noted for having spectacular views of Ben Nevis, which is the highest mountain on the British Isles. With the low-hanging clouds, however, we had no viewings. Our host showed us some photos, proving that there was in fact a very large mountain right outside our window. With the past luck we've had seeing notoriously hidden peaks before -- Mt. McKinley in Alaska and Mt. Robson in British Colombia -- we could not be too disappointed at not seeing Ben Nevis. Our day started exactly as the previous had ended, with a visit to another castle. This one -- Old Inverlochy -- dates back to the 11th Century, is primarily ruins (understandably), and was only a couple blocks from our B&B. The low clouds, misting rain, neighboring graveyard, and swarms ... read more

A little bit more relaxing day today. We didn’t have to be anywhere today, since we’re staying here for 2 nights. We did a geocache in town that consisted of multiple places you had to go to collect information to find the cache. This took us around the immediate vicinity of the Castle Hotel and got us acquainted with the local history. After finding the cache in a local wooded area, we walked around the residential section of town and saw the Golf Course. Engineered by Donald Ross, it’s one of the first around and brought tourism to this little place in the early 1900’s. We went through a small museum in town full of little artifacts from the Norse to the Jacobites, Witch Trials to Priests. Incidentally the castle we’re staying in was the Bishop’s ... read more

Waking this morning we caught a glimpse of some promising sunlight on the light clouds as the sun was rising. How the spirits rose at such a sight. But we have learnt on this part of the trip that you have to treasure each moment because they don’t always last. We stayed the night in a delightful B & B with a wonderful hostess. At breakfast we met our fellow guests, two couples from Grenoble in France. It was great to chat and compare travel experiences with fellow travellers. After farewells all round we stopped briefly in the town centre of Ullapool, the scene of last night’s umbrella disaster. This morning the wind was no better but there was no rain, yet. Our Great Grandmother came from this area so we wandered around the local old ... read more

We slept well in our cosy room, with no wind or rain that we were aware of, then it was up and away on the adventure of going west across the top of Scotland before turning south to Ullapool. It’s fair to say the morning was not dry or sunny but we had hopes of improvement through the day. As we drove, the land changed from farmland to wild moor and mountain land with breathtaking landform and colours. In places the brilliant purple heather was still in full flower, while the green bracken was turning to yellow, orange and brown, making for a rich effect a little like crushed velvet spread across the land. Our cameras were in constant use and we stopped countless times in the little passing places on the narrow road in order ... read more

Today's challenge... get back before dinner.... We're going to explore some of the western highlands and sea coast. Notrh to Inverness and then point towards the sea...... whoops there's a distillery over there.... Good news - bad news. Bad news first... the distillery is doing a complete overhaul so there is no tour thru the plant. The good news... the tourist center is still open and we get to do tastings!!!! Tried the Singelton 12 yr old..... lordy is that stuff smooth. 2 years ago they started to finish the curing by putting it into bourbon and sherry barrels. OK now that we are all liqoured up, back into the car... We are now convinced that all road engineers in the UK are permanently drunk. Hills, winding roads, 3 lanes 2 lanes, no lanes, dips, cattle ... read more

While we´ve been staying in the Muir of Ord area we´ve been lucky enough to do some house and animal sitting. The first was for two weeks at Keith´s cousin Katrina and Roddy´s beautiful house in the country. With its picture windows, rolling lawns, lovely art and views across to the Moray Firth, its a great place to spread out for a couple of weeks. They even let us use their car while they are away. Major bonus. On the first night three roe deer visit us, browsing on the front lawn, and in total relax mode we watch our first DVD for months. Katrina and Roddy´s sons Ewen and David live just up the hill with their families and we manage to fit in a great BBQ party which goes long into the night/morning. Keith ... read more

Now that we´ve bagged our fist Munro we´re feeling pretty full of ourselves. There are plenty of walks around here, many including ancient ruins and historic sights as well as woodlands and great views. Some of these walks have curious histories. In times of economic depression or famine sometimes ornamental building projects were conceived, not taking work from already employed workers but providing additional employment for others, meaning they could put food on the table for their families. Today we can still see the remains of these follies, the fruits of their labour. One of these is the Fyrish Path, near Evanton, a track which passes through forests with moss-covered ground, wee toadstools and big black ridged slugs. As we ascend the hill, gradually the trees are replaced by heather, tinting the landscape purple with flowers. ... read more

It seems you can walk anywhere in Scotland. They have no trespass law and public right of access to land is written into statute, with guidance on common sense usage. So hill walking is a national passtime. We´re in the Highlands surrounded by hills and plenty of them over 3000ft. In Scotland these are classed as ´Munros´ (of course as long as they meet rules on the height of ascent and descent etc). Many people set out to walk as many of these as they can, and today we are going to bag our first Munro. Ben Wyvis can be seen from Muir of Ord, though its often covered with a blanket of mist. We haven´t done much hill walking for a while, so approach the start of the track with some trepidation. The weather is ... read more

Bagged our first Munro!
The cloud clears for a moment

We're off to Scotland, catching a train from Kings Cross to Inverness, covering a very large portion of Britain in one day. As we pass through the countryside England seems very flat and when we reach Scotland there are a lot more hills, and the transition from the lowlands to the highlands is pretty stark with the trees replaced by the purple heather in flower. The journey gives Tessa and me a taste for the country with glimpses of castles, stately homes and cathedrals as well as beautiful countryside and rivers and quaint towns with picturesque bridges. Keith gets to reminisce as we're on his old train route to the Highlands. We spot a couple of wild deer undisturbed by the passing train. We're now into another culture, and station names have Gaelic versions underneath. At ... read more
