There were 10 of us staying at the Ross-shire Red House in Dornie. What fun we had. The main reason why we landed up in Scotland was due to the fact that the McNeil Clan were asked to perform in the "Blas Highland Music Celebration". Paul and Tracey MacNeil performing great traditional musical sounds with the piano and bagpipes. Pauls playing reflects his appreciation of the Gaelic Language and culture, Tracey an excellent piano player of contemporary style and traditional style of Cape Breton Island. Father Rob MacNeil is a Gaelic singer from Barra Glen, Cape Breton Island. Paul & Tracey's two daughters Jessie Helen and Nora also were included in a final singing family event which was held at a sold out performance at the Eilene Donan Castle. They performed along with the Henerson Clan. ... read more

We stayed for 8 days in the Ross-shire Red house of Dornie, just a short walk to the Elean Donan Castle. We almost felt like we were in one of the most beautiful villages around. The view from the house was something else. The village buildings and houses were beautiful with georgeous gardens surrounding each house along with distant views of the mountains of Skye and along with views over Lock Long and Lock Alsh. What a beautiful place to stay. There was a small convenience store, a phone in the middle of the village, a hotel, bar (lively on weekends), a mobile bank service on Tuesdays and Thursdays, a mobile market, and a post office. What a nice quiet place to get away from it all. I took a pleasant walk around the village one ... read more

Finally got my run in this morning, I ran down the hill into town, then north to the turnoff for the Ben Nevis trailhead. In case you're uninitiated, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK (just over 4300 feet - doesn't sound too bad until you realize that you start from sea level!). There, running along a single track road with Ben Nevis off to my left. It was going great until I realized: #1 that I really needed a bathroom, and #2 that the trailhead, my halfway point, didn't have one. So I utilized my survival skills gained from many years in cross-country, and I will spare you the details thereof. We began our drive north. One realizes when driving in Scotland that you do not get anywhere quickly - this is, of ... read more

bike stats: time cycling: 4 hours 13 minutes travelled 39.4 miles average speed 9.3mph max speed 30.7mph Today was still pretty wet and windy. We planned to do a circular trip west out of Stornoway to the Callanish Stone Circle and Carloway Broch on the west coast. We initially got a bit lost on the road out of Stornoway on the road back to Tarbert and struggled against very strong headwinds for a few miles before turning back. The actual turning we needed was cunningly disguised as an industrial type place! Once on the right road we were straight out into beautiful moorland and bogland scenery full of hills. Whoever said Lewis was flat was lying - ravens and eagles swooped around near the road. Unfortunately as I cycled I became aware of a twinge on ... read more

Today was supposed to be a day off the bikes but we did actually cycle 9 miles northwards (doh!) to check out another spot which looked like a campsite on the OS map. However it just turned out to be a caravan park. Andy managed to fix his wheel at Alex Dan's bike shop. Alex Dan was not there himself but a dude working there was really helpful and let Andy find the bits he needed to fix the wheel AND let him use the workshop with no hassle. The friendly helpful trustingness of the Outer Hebrides peeps amazes me, it's great and so different to how things are in the SE of England. Alex Dan's bike shop in Stornoway rocks! While we were in the workshop I spotted a letter written to Alex Dan from ... read more

Cycle Stats: 1 hour 45 minutes cycling 12.1 miles travelled 6.9mph average speed (I keep having to remind myself when I despair at this speed that this is not too rubbish considering I was lugging my entire luggage, camping kit and a 5 litre mineral water bottle in my panniers!) 30.4mph max speed Woke up after a bad night's sleep due to the foul weather. However this morning we had the luxury of heinz beans with veggie sausages which I had picked up in the shop in Leverburgh the previous day - a delightful addition to our now habitual beans and tomatoes brekkies. We started the ride to Tarbert, the capital of Harris. Very mountainous and the ascents seemed to go on forever, occasionally we were pushed up the mountain by a tailwind. Sometimes it would ... read more

This was definately my favorite day of my whole time over in Europe (and probably of my life!). I was in Scotland, which already made it a great day, but I got to visit the Eilean Donan Castle (I have wanted to visit it since I lived in the Netherlands). Ross had sketched me a picture of it for his first Christmas present for me, so it was even more special that we got to go see it together. Jen, Joe, Matt, Kristen, Ross and I first went to the Visitor Center to see if we could go across the bridge to the castle. While the others stayed to look in the shop a little bit longer, Ross and I headed out toward the castle once we found out we could go. As we were ... read more

Breakfast was great, as usual, and we loaded back up into the car and headed off of Sky. Ali left her purple sweater in the restaurant in Shiel Bridge so we backtracked a bit to retrieve it. We had some time to kill until they opened for lunch so we took some more pictures of Eilean Donan while we waited. The funny part is that we ran into the guys that we met at breakfast in Shiel Bridge! They were the funniest little German men that were island hopping on holiday and I had completely forgotten about them until we saw them again. What are the chances? So, we got Ali's sweater and headed north to Ullapool. Much of the roadways north are one lane with pulloffs so you can allow traffic to pass you. It ... read more

So today saw us driving through the Torridon Mountains. Very, very remote, all single track roads, I imagine that it's scary to drive in a car, I KNOW that it's terrifying in a bus! But hey...adventure is good! Had an awesome rainbow over Loch Carron as we were heading out of Strome Ferry, that was nice...lots of sunshine, amazing colours. Great photo op, that. We stopped at the Meall Gorm viewpoint, which is stunning. It's just so remote and desolate. And with the mist swirling around through it, you just feel like you're completely alone. We laid on our backs on this one rocks and sort of hung over the edge, to see the view upside-down. Wow...I have no idea how to describe it. You'd have to do it yourself to see, but the change in ... read more

So, after waving our cottage goodbye, we headed off on the last leg of our great Scottish roadtrip - up to Inverness to see Loch Ness and hopefully the monster...well...we hoped. The morning that we left the cottage we got to see our first smattering of snow. Aaron had bought some fake stuff on Christmas eve, and Bridie wandering aimlessly around the garden realised that the white flakes on the ground weren't fake! It was real snow, and it made our day. Inverness was a few hours drive away, right up the top of the country - well...kind of anyway. It'll do for this purpose. We went to the Loch Ness Monster exhibition, and while Aaron wasn't convinced, Paula and I are sure there's something down there (do do do do, do do do do - ... read more
