Geo: 54.3288, -5.71668On Monday I set my sails and sat nav for Downpatrick in Northern Ireland. The route took me back through Pettigo, so I waved at McGrath Castle as I drove on by and went back into the UK. It feels very odd to drive accross the border with no checkpoint, passport check, nothing. Just a sign on the side of the road saying Welcome to Northern Ireland. Another weird feeling is when your car is in kilometres, your brain is in kilometres but the speed limits are in miles. They look so slow! The sat nav finally earned its value for me by translating the mph limit to kph. Hopefully no nasty tickets will be coming for me. I arrived in Downpatrick in time for lunch. I'm staying at a pub which happens to ... read more

Well, since the two-day double decker bus tour in Derry was a bust, and because I felt as though I had seen everything I wanted to in that city, I decided to look into taking the train to and from Belfast for the day so I could squeeze in another city. I decided to go for it, and was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at the Londonderry train station that the fare was much lower than I had expected! I then took the train to Belfast, which took about two hours and featured stunning views of the Irish countryside. Upon arrival in Belfast, I found a place to grab lunch and then headed to the tourism office to (hopefully) purchase a ticket for a bus tour. These bus tours were still running, and I was able ... read more

Beannachtaí (greetings) from Northern Ireland! I’ll begin this blog by commenting on the weather (surprised?). Northern Ireland is famous for its weather, especially bad weather. Well folks, we have been bathed in sunshine since we arrived. The great weather has followed us from Wales. We’re very happy to be back in Hillsborough with David and Barbara and family. David and Barbara live on a beautiful property near the Hillsborough village. Their main crops are flowers and eucalyptus which they sell locally. Barbara also grows tomatoes WITH flavour! Their secret ingredient is alpaca poo. The Erwins have two alpacas whose main role is lawn mowing but they also provide great fertiliser. Rest assured that the poo is mixed into the soil and not spread on the tomatoes! She also make the BEST jam you’ve ever tasted. She ... read more

Today was absolutely amazing. I started the morning off waking up early again so I could get to my tour to the Giant’s Causeway with Paddy Wagon. The tour guide today was named John and he was extremely funny. The Giants Causeway is in Northern Ireland which is a completely different country than the Republic of Ireland. So when we were crossing the border, John told us we would need our passports, a customs form, and five euros to enter. Of course he was just kidding but many people took it seriously and came to ask him about a form. He told them to see his secretary and then announced that we had all just crossed the border. Got to love Irishmen. Our first stop to the Causeway was at the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge. It cost ... read more

I ran around for years, looking for answers that were buried deep under blood and hate, dirt and shame. Still today, I struggled to control my sense and can't fully understand. I remember the ritual like it was yesterday. You were once again leaving. During a couple of seconds which felt like hours. My world was stopping. My eyes were getting wet, but I couldn't look away. I knew only too well what was coming, but couldn't do better, but look at you as you were leaving. Questions were popping inside my heads and getting lost through a chaos of sadness and incomprehension. I was acting tough and I kept telling people that you were a good man and you were doing this for the better good, but I was burning from inside. Not long before, ... read more

Sitting watching Coronation Street, listening to the rain bashing off the window-thank god we're off in under two weeks! After about three years of planning and saving, ten injections each and four weeks trying to pick the right shoes (and re-picking after Phil threw them all out when moving out of our house... he says it was an accident!), and trying to get our heads around the complicated forms and visa applications - its 13 days till we leave!! We've moved out of our house, handed in our notices (with big smiles on our faces) and in a week or so and set sail for Liverpool, Europe and beyond... Apart from a few package holidays this will be the first real travel experience for both of us so we're leaving rainy Bangor NI not quiet knowing ... read more

Ok UK – you’ve made your point – I shouldn’t have boasted that I had 11 days of no rain in May... now you’ve given us 11 days of rain, so we’re even. Please stop. Today we headed out to hunt for (some of) the murals in Belfast/West Belfast. Of course it was ok when we left the hostel, but about 25min into our walk (so right where the murals start) it started to pour... so much pouring rain. I suppose there isn’t that much to type about today – we basically just wandered around Shankill and Falls Roads looking at the murals and getting soaked in the process. Umbrellas only do so much. The murals were neat to see, but it would have been nicer/we would have explored a lot more if we didn’t have ... read more

(Note: There are more photos on pages 2 & 3 of most of the blog entries!) Friday 15th Car from Biarritz to Bordeaux; Plane from Bordeaux to Dublin; Bus from Dublin to Belfast = 11 hours. Flight delayed 30 mins, and then a screw-up with the Irish bus company, who hadn't enough places on the Express bus for all the punters coming home from various European football matches. So I ended up on whatever the opposite of Express is, and got into Belfast at 9:30 pm, instead of the predicted 6:00 pm! >:/ Met at the bus station by the fabulous Ian and Janet Corry, and whisked off for Billecart champagne, a great Spanish red, and an excellent dinner in a restaurant called Cayenne. Home by midnight to sample some of their poteen, sloe gin, and ... read more

Northern Ireland - Belfast. Kevin's mother and father came over to Canada from Belfast in the 1950's, several years before the troubles of Northern Ireland. Kevin's brother Michael and sister Margaret were born in Belfast. Much family still lives in Belfast and we were very fortunate to stay and visit with some of Kevin's father's family for 1 week. We were spoiled with food, family stories and history, and sightseeing opportunities. This stop was the perfect way to end our 4 week trip of a lifetime!!... read more
