It's now November, and I can't believe how fast time is moving. I've managed to get myself fairly wrapped up in life here at in Northern Ireland, which is why it's taken so long for me to get back to this blog. Of course, since I've not managed to stay on top of blogging, I've experienced the downward cycle of never knowing what I would write about when I got around to it again, as each passing day tends to add more to the “not written about yet” pile. So, my solution is to give up on the chronological attempt at story telling, and simply pick random stories and thoughts to write about, most likely as they pop into my head and not in any semblance of logical order. “Accents” Most people I've talked to ... read more

Atter getting the bus form the airport into the city we checked into our hostel room. We'd booked a twin room because it was cheaper and normally you can just push the beds together, but these ones were super skinny and bolted to the floor! So we made a little cubby house under them. We went for a walk past the Queens University and through the Botanic gardens then did some shopping for supplies for our road trip. We looked for the famous political graffiti and banner around the place but only found one. It just so happened that our trip to Norther Ireland coincided with the Belfast World Rally special stage. So our first night in Belfast was spend watching cars racing around the castle. Very exciting stuff! And VERY cold. The next morning we ... read more

When we arrived at Belfast ferry terminal we were hoping we would have been able to find some information about accommodation we we hadn't been able to find anything for a reasonable price on the internet. Unfortunately we found nothing there. Our fallback was to walk into town to get to the visitor information centre which had an accommodation booking service. When we left the ferry terminal building it looked like a long walk into town and we saw some taxis waiting out the front. As we waited a taxi driver approached us and offerred us a lift into the city for only £5. When he heard where we were going and what we were trying to do he offerred to find us something himself. He made a phone call and he ended up getting us ... read more

It's amazing how fast time slips away from me here, so here goes blog round two. Although I would love to spend a good bit of time on sightseeing in Paris, I think I'll have to skip through that rather quickly to get to more current things, like life here at UUJ. I'll start back in France, which was an absolute blast. Our first few days were spent in Paris with some hard-core tourism, with Coralie acting as, friend, guide, and translator all in one. From Monday morning until Tuesday evening, we managed to see highlights of the Louvre, take a boat tour of Paris, visit Montmartre, hit the second floor of the Eiffel tour, walk to the Arc de Triomphe, and visit Notre Dam. We also hit up a perfume store and took a tour ... read more

I am back! My apologies for not having updated my blog for some time. However, the internet was not working in my building for the past few days. The solution was finally discovered last night. So with that said I am back in business. Classes started for my program this past Monday. To be quite honest I am very happy to get things underway. Though I enjoyed having nothing to do but explore and travel about, it is certainly time to begin my studies. I have two classes this semester; Research Methods, and Modernity and Its Discontents which I have on Tuesday afternoons. The Methods class is required of all postgraduate students as we are required to write a thesis in the final stages of our time here. The latter course will prove to be quite ... read more

Went to the beautiful seaside village of Bangor today. We walked along the sea wall past the harbour and the rows of tidy little San Francisco-like homes. I wonder if the people who live there take for granted that spectacular view across the peninsula? So beautiful. The wind across the water is brutally cold and smells like sea salt. The water was really choppy which Rose tells me is referred to as "white horses." (Remember Rose is from Ireland so she's hip to the lingo and legend). I said, "how do the waves look like horses?" She said, "Have you no imagination? The whitecaps are like their manes." I suppose if you had a few pints under your belt, the waves could look like horse manes surfacing momentarily then rolling under the water. Like horses moving ... read more

Sushi in Belfast is good but insanely expensive. We went to Sakura where they have sushi on a treadmill and you pick what you want. I had a few pieces which would have cost me about $11 at home. £17 here! That's $35. Nobody can survive on $35 worth of sushi, unfortunately, so because I was still hungry, we went for curry. I have to say that nobody can make a curry like the Irish. We eat it all the time. It's fantastic--better than anything I've had in the Indian restaurants in Canada. Afterwards, we wandered through the streets of Belfast, which are so different now. Years ago, there would have been soldiers with machine guns at every corner and you'd have to have your bag checked before you walked into any of the shops. Now ... read more

It's tradition with the Irish rellies to meet every Saturday afternoon for tea at the coffee shop in Debenham's shopping centre downtown. And then afterwards they all go shopping. The lingerie department was advertising "free bra fitting" (did you know that 70 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra?) so we all lined up and waited our turn to go into the little booth to be measured. Turns out, 70 percent of us were wearing the wrong size bra, too. Rose promptly bought herself a (giant) lovely pink bra in the correct size and after wearing it yesterday she has just now informed me, "it's cuttin' the tits off me."... read more
