What a lovely English summer and I put together a picnic for a day trip from Swindon to Avebury with a friend. Thankfully, I reached the bus stop early. Being Sunday, the bus was set to leave a little early. I immediately bought a ticket and called my friend who was also nearby. We made it in easy 30 mins bus ride! Avebury is famous for ancient circles of large stones which were built during the Neolithic age (New Stone age) around 2500 BC. Yes, it was built during the times of the famous Egyptian pyramids. These are nothing spectacular like the pyramids. There is an artificial mound called Silbury hill, Kenneth Barrow (a burial site of about 35 bodies) and a few other sites in the vicinity. Still, something to make us wonder. We walked about ... read more

Day 3… I managed to get a goodnight sleep even with the ruckus from other campers late into the night, and after porridge for breakfast and a black coffee I packed up a now dry tent and headed to my next Historical site. This was the Marlborough white horse a whopping 2 miles away, the only problem was finding a place to park as usual, being early on a Sunday I decided to just park on the road, which turned out to be ideal as it was quite close to the white horse; only a round trip off around 1 mile and I had a lot to do today including the drive home. A little history about the horse; This white horse was cut in 1804 by pupils of a boys' school run by a Mr ... read more

Avebury Stone Circle was recommended by Bryson as a lesser visited stone formation than Stonehenge. It is a World Heritage Site. It started in the Bronze Age, and includes a 16th century manor house, and 17th century threshing barns. A small community is within the perimeter of the stone circle. It's fun to observe the white horses on the hillsides from afar. Only the Uffington white horse is of certain prehistoric origin, being some three thousand years old. Most of the others date from the last three hundred years or so, and the origins of some are impossible to establish with any certainty. They are accommplished by scraping away a thin layer of soil to exposed the chalk substrate. Stopped for a beer and while sitting on the deck, a whiteheaded bird flew in the tree ... read more

Geo: 51.4286, -1.85394We set off after breakfast (early morning highlights where the kids seeing squirrels in the park and seeing horses trotting past our hotel window). We tried to explain to the kids that the depression in the corner of the park where we park the car was a bomb crater from 1940, but they were uninterested - I guess it is all ancient history to them!Drove off down the M4 - K had a turn at driving - to Marlborough, which is a lovely Georgian town. On the drive we played a game "how many things over 100 years old can you see?". I know that some of the sights that the kids counted were dubious, but they got to over 100, and Steven and Georgia saw a deer! At Marlborough, we stopped for a ... read more

So, I was planning to spend this weekend in Katowice as I booked a £2 RyanAir return a few months back, coinciding with what I thought might be another show in Prague, but this turned out not to happen. However some important uni commitments came up and tbh, I can't really afford to spend 4 days in a city where I know no one and didn't fancy sleeping rough in the forest in the bleak Silesian midwinter. Instead I took one day off uni and with this rather wonderful character Jitka (who hadn't left London in months - something which I believe to be seriously dangerous to one's health), headed down to Avebury, a place my friend Gabriela recommended to me due to its high energy, ancient stone circles and rather spectacular "natural" features. It was ... read more

N..'s nephew, joined us for the day, away from his work in London. Visited Avebury, which has a large stone circle around the village. The stones are not as big as those at Stonehenge, but impressive because of the size of the stone circle. Then visited Stonehenge, as you can tell from the pictures. Surprisingly it was not as touristed as we expected. It was busy for a weekend afternoon, but not as bad as we'd expected. It was a hot day and we were quite exhausted from the heat. Came home to a wonderful dinner that N..'s cousin had cooked.... read more

Went to see anopther little village close by with Greg and his parents. Avebury is known for it's stone circles that have been around since prehistoric times (4500 to 5000 years old...). This country has so much history that it's hard to retain everything! The Stone Circle is similar to Stonehenge as in no one knows how it came about and what it was for........ read more

Geo: 51.4268, -1.85322From Stonehenge we drove to Avebury about 40 minutes north. Along the way I advised the group to keep watch as there are many sites in the area. Beth's keen eye caught a horse in the side of a hill. I later saw a map in Avebury showing a bunch of different horses. Most of these horses are not thousands of years old but they are still quite cool. See this site for more information: http://wiltshirewhitehorses.org.uk I have no idea which horse we saw.I recommend a visit to Avebury if you just saw Stonehenge. This place is crazy. The henge is something like 16 times larger than Stonehenge. The ditch and mound are enormous. That's a lot of 'shoveling' with antlers and bones. And remember... it's chalk. The town was built through the henge ... read more

With an early start we headed for Avebury to see the 335 metre diameter ancient stone circle, flanked by older massive ditches and embankments (dating possibly from 3400 BC). The town itself was especially pretty with thatched-roofed Elizabethan style buildings, atmospheric old stone church and church yard which was sited at one end of standing stone starcens. Not far away was 40-metre high Silbury Hill built from chalk (dating from 2750BC) and the West Kennett Long Barrow, a tomb complex (dating from about 3600 BC and apparently in use until about 2500 BC). Further South was the famous Stonehenge, where surrounding earth and ditch works date to 3100 BC and the bluestone monument dating from perhaps 2500 BC. All these were most impressive in both their longevity and mystery. We arrived at Stonehenge only an hour ... read more
