Tomorrow i am heading to Mumbai, India. I have packed and repacked three times and i still feel as thought i am missing something. I've already checked in online so am now fueled with adrenaline and raring to go. I hope that while i am there i gain more self confidence in knowing that i am able to look after and succeed in a totally different culture. So many people have told me different things about what to expect. I am keeping an open mind and expecting the worst. With the hope that things can then only be an improvement. My biggest worry is what clothing to wear and being 'groped' in the streets. As silly as it sounds. i'm not sure how i will react to this but i am sure i will deal ... read more

Since I’ve had plans the last few Saturdays, today I decided to just explore Leeds a little bit. I meandered through the city center until I found Kirkgate Market. That place was crazy! They had a huge building, and inside were a lot of stands selling all sorts of things: candy, cards, toys, clothes, watches, etc. There were little bakeries, butcher shops, and fresh fruit stands. There wasn’t much room between vendors and there were a lot of people crowding the spaces. I eventually made my way to the outdoor market, which was a little more spacious. There was so much to see, but it was all in a confusing mess. I have no idea how people shop there normally. I just bought 2 postcards and called it a day.... read more

Arrival in Leeds, Part II Leeds Met University offers students a Meet and Greet service. Basically, I get to ride in a taxi to my flat (dorm/apartment thingies) for free. I knew taxis had a reputation for being scary. I also knew that I was likely to get more scared than I normally would, so I said to myself, “Jade, he’s going to drive on the left side of the road. Don’t freak out!” While I was thinking this, he pulled into the road. Since he didn’t turn immediately, I assumed we were making a left turn. He suddenly swerved to the right, and I about had a heart attack. It took me a few seconds to realize that driving on the left side of the road meant that right turns were long and left ... read more

Arrival in Leeds Part I Irony: I made sure that none of my layovers were too long so I wouldn’t have to be bored in the airport, but I ended up being 3 hours early for my first flight in Minneapolis. Luckily, I managed to amuse myself by trying out the moving walkways. Despite everyone’s claims that Obama was going to ruin our country, there were very few people leaving the country after his inauguration. On my first flight, I got the whole back section to myself, except for two flight attendants who think the very back row is the cool place to hang out. When we landed in Georgia, I saw a HUGE airplane; way bigger than the one I was on. I left our airplane, took a long walk (with more moving walkways) to ... read more

I am getting excited now as it is only 7 days before I go on holiday to Australia. My sister and I arrive in Sydney on Boxing Day and stay 1 night then off to the Hunter Valley for 3 nights before returning to Sydney for New Year's Eve. We are then flying up to Brisbane on 2nd Jan and hiring a car and driving up to Airlie Beach over 6-7 days, hoping to visit Australia Zoo and see the dolphins at Tangalooma on the way. Then we stay on Hamilton Island for 2 nights before flying to Cairns where we will be staying in Port Douglas for 4 nights. We are hoping to go out to the reef again (we did this in 2000) and maybe have a go at white water rafting and a ... read more

After a very long, uncomfortable and uneventful flight including a change of plane in Paris, I finally made it to Manchester Airport where my parents met me and took me home. The hero returns scene. I was looking forward to my home comforts in the days to come. Looking back, this has probably been the best trip I made up to date. There has been a lot of highlights and a lot more than I anticipated. The big highlights were seeing Volcans Osorno and Villarrica in Chile and Cerro Aconcagua in Argentina. There has been some challenges especially with myself and concerning my stay in Mendoza. I do not expect an incident free or challenge free trip but I can say I got through those trials and look back at those as an achievement. I had ... read more
