As i said on yesterday's post, it would be likely that if the weather's nice il try and do a few miles on my new bike. Infact the weather was just as nice as the day before, i think that those long bleak days are behind us now for the year, with summer now fast approaching. So i got round to having today's lunch, a bit of a Saturday classic, smoked salmon fillets with plenty of salad. As the weather was so nice, we decided to eat outside for the first time this year. With lunch behind me i decided to go work it off with a few miles cycle up to the nearby rock formation, which is known locally as Almscliffe Crag. Its only a short 15 to 20 minute cycle to the lane that ... read more

Whilst still being very hungover from the night before, TC phoned to say that the bike shop had contacted him earlier saying that the bikes were ready to be collected. I was quite surprised the first time i saw the bikes. I felt that we had managed to get our hands on a decent bit of kit for a very reasonable price. As all 3 of us were buying bikes at the same time, the bike shop, Ace Cycles, said they would cut the price down as well as include pannier racks and the fitting of them for free. The weather today was really nice, not too hot, but a nice blowing breeze and few clouds in the sky. So after doing the golden hand shake with the guys at the bike shop the 3 of ... read more

This is just going to be kept fairly short. I'm planning on, where possible, writing a travel blog on the various things that i come across on both the preparation towards my travels as well as the actual trip itself. The idea for the trip came about as one of the other travelers I'm going along with suggested organizing a excursion that allowed for money to be raised for charity through completing a challenge. The challenge was decided that the trip would be completed by using bicycles to cover around 1000 miles worth of Icelandic terrain in just over 8 weeks. The 2 other buddies that are coming along with me on this trip are Tom (TC), who is a seasoned traveler and also Chris (Noddy). We are hoping to raise in total £1000 for: - ... read more

Harrogate and Ripley Castle After meeting some new people (several Canadians and a Californian), we ventured north of Leeds via train on Saturday at noon. Meeting at the Leeds train station, we bought a return ticket for ~5 pounds. The short train ride took us to the town of Harrogate. After arriving there, we promptly bought bus tickets to take us to the Castle and Gardens at Ripley. Upon arrival, we noticed the quaint town and the Ripley Castle, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. The castle belongs to the Ingleby family and it dates back 700 years. The castle was truly magnificent, however, photography was discouraged by the tour guide. There was also a garden and magnificent fields surrounding the castle. Taken pictures are provided. Following the castle expedition, the group made their was back to ... read more

After the Odell siblings' jaunts in Europe, I felt very lucky to have Kyrie in Yorkshire for a few days of wandering. As this was Kyrie's only allotted time in Britain, we felt it fitting that we take a trip to London to see the sights and partake in one or two of the many cultural events on offer. The weekend didn't get off to an auspicious start. We were unlucky to have chosen to stay in Hampstead Heath, in the North of London, on a weekend when the Northern Line of the tube was shut down, so there was the added drama of trying to negotiate alternate train lines and buses-always fun! After checking in, negotiating the tube and bus combo to get into London centre, we spent a good hour lining up for vendors ... read more

Friday, Sept 19, Leaving Scotland for Harrogate, England I went down right away for bkfst, hoping for hot food, but no joy - it was already cool from coming from across the street. We loaded up and headed out of Edinburgh, driving by more plain soot-stained limestone buildings (Georgian, some people think they're beautiful; I think they're kind of homely, especially since there are so many of them with no variety). There certainly is much more in Edinburgh that I would like to see (like Holyrood Palace, not offered as we expected) but I don't feel a need to come back - many people love it, as I previously mentioned - guess I'm not a city person anymore. Our last Scotland stop was at Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott's home that he built after making a fair ... read more

Thought I might write a quick entry on how we are settling into Yorkshire life for all our pals in London. We've been in our flat in Harrogate for 3 weeks now and still enjoying the novelty of driving to work, leaving the office before 6.30 at night (sometimes leaving time starts with a '5'!) and being amoungst hills, greenery, dogs and breathing fresh air. Harrogate is lovely and much bigger than we both thought. Our flat is not is the swankiest area but is 2 minutes walk from the high street and station. There are loads of restaurants, so far our favourites being a lovely Italian called Sasso and a wine bar called Bowyers which does a steak and wine special on a Thursday night. We have yet to find a fantastic pub, though the ... read more

Had a day booking campervans for New Zealand, camp sites for Easter Island and looking into tour companies in Bolivia. Travelblog very helpful for hints and tips so thought this would be a good way to keep our friends and family (well...my mum) up-to-date on our travels when they begin. Let's hope we are tech-savvy enough to use this blog when we are away. Less than two months to go...... read more

In the coming months (september) i'll visit South America for the first time with a few friends, we'll be travelling to Argentina, Peru and Bolivia. we've done all the preparations necessary and I look forward to it. One of the conundrums is deciding how to spend while abroad, in the past i've opted for cash but that's risky, there debit cards but some UK banks including mine charge you a fee every time you use your debit card abroad, credit cards, am not sure whether they charge you but also I do not want to pay interest. enter prepaid credit cards, these are similar to credit cards or debit cards but are more like gift vouchers, you must deposit the money and there's interest to pay. So for the first time, i'll give prepaid credit cards ... read more
