Saturday in Manchester. Our apartment is about 3 minutes walk from the no 86 bus into the city so we have bought a weekly ticket on a smartcard that seems to give us Manchester wide travel for the week at fairly good value. Today we went on a “free” walking tour of the central city area. We find these walking tours good value as they help us to orient ourselves in the city and give us some clues on where we should go, over and above what we have researched ourselves. It is pot luck with the tour guide, some are a complete waste of time but this one was very good. I found the history of the universities and the Irish troubles interesting. The Peterloo massacre fits into the times of Alison’s family history interest. ... read more

Where in the world is Suzy? Oooops - occasionally we lapse back into thinking where our old motorhome might be. We wonder if she is well loved. She has been MOT'd either by the dealer or the new owners who didn't trust our MOT which ran until next February The old girl must have passed enthusiastically. Have they thought about replacing her cam belt? She was certainly due one. They would need some new tyres. Perhaps she is visiting places abroad that we have missed. Perhaps she is at home riding round Scotland on the NC500 - Scotlands supposed answer to Route 66. Or is she still being adventurous? So where in the world is Gabby? On her way from Preston to our overnight stop at Southport. That genteel seaside resort - a quieter more reserved ... read more

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? Nowhere exotic that is for sure. She is parked up on our drive waiting for her next trip away. I have though gone ahead of myself. Let me take you back two weeks. We are still in France, Morning is breaking over the country and we are setting out from our campsite heading for the tunnel and the journey home. It is still dark as we leave and we both say the same thing. Let's not stay here again. The journey to Calais takes us 15 minutes and we see not one migrant. What we do see are acres of high fencing. I swear the fencing has grown in size and quantity with each year that passes. Razor wire atop the fencing. The economic migrants have moved on ... read more

Still not feeling physically great, all this travelling is doubtless taking its toll. But the main aim for my day at Rebellion Festival was to see favourites The Outfit. Anything else would be a bonus. Woke up pretty early as usual and took it easy in the morning until it was time for breakfast. Found a Vegas-themed restaurant on the promenade and ordered their avocado on sourdough. The avocado was rock-hard so I sent it back. No point paying for something you can't even cut into. And it turned out they did have soft avocado in the kitchen, which makes me wonder why they thought they could fob me off with a hard one like that. Not good, but the banana smoothie was some compensation. Shame because it's a nice-looking American-style diner. I then got in ... read more

Still a bit sniffly but my friend drove me to Peel in the morning for my last few hours on the rock. I'd been there before on my last visit about ten years ago but remembered very little. Wandered around this little coastal town with its sandy beach and multitude of cafes and charity shops. It has some cute alleys and houses in the local style, and the three-legged emblem of Man is ever-present. Had a quick look at the free exhibition in the House of Manannan museum on holidaying in the Isle of Man. It used to be a popular destination from the Victorian era until its decline in popularity in the fifties and sixties with the advent of package holidays to the sun. I think with the right marketing efforts it could become popular ... read more

Manchester airport security sucks❗️✈️✈️✈️? Ok. Got that out of my system We spent the last three days in blackpool England visiting family. I used to visit here every 4-5 years but this is the first time back since Geneva was a baby. So Blackpool..... how does one succinctly capture the oddity that is Blackpool? It's a resort town and destination for "holiday makers", but mostly it attracts stag and hen parties, rowdy bar crowds or really old people wanting to visit the Blackpool Tower or walk along the famous promenade. We reckon it was a terribly exciting place to visit in the 1950s or so. Just about every attraction it has is dated and surpassed by more contemporary attractions in other places. It is chock-a-block with arcades, gambling machines, discount retailers, fish/chips and ice cream stores, ... read more

National Sausage Day Being that I spent the third with a lot of Christmassyness, I decided not to do Twelth Night (or what you will), nor celebrate the Serbian and Montenegrin (Montenegron?) celebration of Tucindan, although I do one year hope to hold my children to ransom until they give me a gift. But alas, I have no children to demand gifts from. So sausage day it is, and i have celebrated they way i know best... Sausage sarnie for breakfast, and a sausage roll for my lunch (thanks Dad!), as well as adding a sausage recipe to my book to try out at the weekend. There's honestly not a lot more to say about the festival. I haven't been able to find much about the event's history, but there are quite a few people tweeting ... read more

We survived the night on what must be the hardest bed in the world. We are sure even prisoners in jail get a softer bed than what we have! Being tired certainly helps and if we are going to have repeat this tonight then we had better take a long hike today to make ourselves tired tonight. The weather today is perfect, mid 20’s by mid morning and it looks like the English summer has arrived for us. We will make the most of it as long as it lasts. We plan to wander the Blackpool promenade and take in how the English spend their day at the beach. And then as we need some more grocery supplies we will walk to a supermarket to get what we need. First though its breakfast and a dose of ... read more

Our two days with Carolyn and Trevor have gone in a flash and today we are off to Blackpool after a little more digging around the Angus area on ancestral matters. And not a bad day again has dawned which will give us dry weather for the reasonably long drive we face once we get onto the motorway and head southwest. First through Carolyn has got a special breakfast lined up for us of smoked salmon and scrambled egg, very tasty and something the BBA V3 hasn’t quite stretched too yet. Time for some photos in the garden to update those we already have from 2009 and then we are on our way after a memorable couple of days in Arncroach. We retraced our drive across the Tay Bridge to Dundee and headed first for Broughty ... read more

We arrived at a cold, grey Stansted airport and caught the Easybus that I had booked earlier to Old Street in London. I planned a walking route to Victoria Coach Station and once we arrived we were left with a generous 5 hours for the walk. The route took us through the Strand and Fleet St, passing Trafalgar Square and St. James Park. It was busy and exciting and, as always, the magnificent architecture and amazing spaces gave me a thrill. People were knocking off from work at 5pm and the crowds on The Strand became so thick that I had to make sure Tomas would find his way to the bus station alone if we happened to get separated. I had previously passed through London city twice in my lifetime but only for a day ... read more
