After almost a year at home our feet were getting itchy. My brother Dave and his partner Claire were travelling around in South America and announced that they had 'settled' in Cusco, high in the Peruvian Andes, for a few months. This was an area of South America (among many others) we had been dreaming of visiting for years but somehow never got round to. This was the perfect chance, now or never! Within a couple of weeks of our telephone conversation the flight was booked! We leave home on June 9th. After careful researching we decided to fly into Santiago, the capital of Chile, and work our way North. Hopefully this way we can gain altitude slowly and avoid the dreaded altitude sickness. To cut down on at least one long bus journey we will ... read more

Hi there We awoke and had a hearty breakfast then Davey came and picked us up. he took us to Blackpool and showed us the sights and history of Blackpool, we went up the tower and did some shopping, it was too cold and windy to go on the ferris wheel or rollercoaster so we just did a drive around. went back to the pub were Fiona's Mum and Dad were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, it was nice to meet them all. We went out for steak with Dave and Fiona it was a great night such a shame that it was only 1 day... I now have two daughters that love Chocky Pom. Bed by midnight have another big drive tomorrow to London, only 3hrs if the traffic is good See you soon... read more

The Big Scottish Tour begins on 28 May with an uneventful drive to Hill Farm just off the M42 to drop off the caravan for one night and then to the Greasleys in Bournville to drop off Ethan. Spent the night there. 29 May left the next morning to collect the caravan and set off up the M42/M6 Toll. We arrived at Red Rock Fisheries CL just outside Preston about 2 pm. It is a very nice site popular for fishing as it has a lovely lake. But it is so close to the M6 and the traffic noise is horrible. The review on the web said it was quiet and tranquil. I can only think that whoever wrote it was profoundly deaf. We took a short drive into Preston and walked along the River Ribble ... read more

Friday The Travel Lodge last night was clean and good value but unfortunately my room was facing the main road through town and was opposite the Ring o' Bells pub which had loud music until 4am with a noisy crowd to boot, which did not quieten down until 4.30am. Therefore sleep was on ration. We had an excellent breakfast next door in Weatherspoons for not much more than a fiver each - excellent. The road was hit at just after 9 to follow the cycle path, along the old railway line, down to Glasson Dock. Here we looked out over the estuary to Sunderland Point, where we were yesterday afternoon and could just see Blackpool Tower. We left the coast and had a brew at 'The Barn' in Scorton before tackling the hilly Trough of Bowland ... read more

Friday Light rain overnight which just covered the ground and luckily had stopped by 8am. Good breakfast again today to set us off on an easier day around the Morecambe Bay. Cycling around the marshes by Meathop to Levens was very tranquil and traffic free. Arnside was a gem with lovely panoramic views of the bay enhanced by the railway bridge from Grange. A compulsory coffee stop was called for with exquisite scones with jam. Unfortunately this was followed by several stiff climbs to Silverdale before the descent to Carnforth where we followed the estuary around to the south of the town. From here we picked up the canal through Hest Bank to Morecambe where we saw a predatory heron and a swan coasting at the side with its reflection shining in the water beneath. Everyone ... read more

Well we are just packing now to go to Australia and are so looking forward to the journey. Have got our itinerary sorted and quite a lot of our accommodation booked most of it via Airbnb. What would we do with out this site. Anyone travelling should try to stay in one of the houses, rooms etc from Airbnb as you see real life and not the clinical hotel room life. It feels funny that we are off on a road trip again but exciting as well - keep reading my blog and any messages /comments will be welcome.... read more

Back in Blighty. Weird. They have trees and things. And the people. The people are so unfriendly!! Airport staff in Keflavic were really friendly, laughing and joking with us as they searched Moi's bag. (Mind you, you haven't see what she keeps in there :-). Airport staff at Manchester were grumpy, barking orders as they herded the human cattle through the endless barriers. Ah . . . home. (Fade to black. Credits. Music.) ... read more

3D Sun Alert: A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field at -0200 on Oct 2nd sparked a G2-class geomagnetic storm. G2 Class Definition: Strength: Moderate Power systems: High-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms, long-duration storms may cause transformer damage. Spacecraft operations: Corrective actions to orientation may be required by ground control; possible changes in drag affect orbit predictions. Other systems: HF radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes, and aurora has been seen as low as New York and Idaho (typically 55° geomagnetic lat.)**. PostScript: I was in South Iceland looking at the sky at -0200 on Oct 2nd. In fact, I was looking at the sky at -0300, -0400, -0500 and -0600 before it started getting light.
