Today was a day for a bit of exploring. Stuart dropped me off at 8:45 at the Red Funnel ferry terminal in Southampton so that I could make the 9 AM departure to East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The island sits as a natural barrier/protector for the harbor at Southampton. The conventional ferry takes just about one hour . Upon arrival, I bought a day bus pass and set out for Newport, the largest town on the island. After taking a look at 1400s this and 1500s that, I took another bus to the southeast and the town of Sandown. This was a very scenic ride over hill and dale; down tree covered lanes that barely allowed the bus and a car to pass, thru housing estates and small towns that only seem possible ... read more

Isle of Wight (2nd-4th May, 2006) Some of you will know Kylie Wallace (now Kylie Kingsford). Kylie and her husband, Steve live in Southampton in Southern England which is on the mainland just across from the Isle of Wight. I spent the weekend with them and it turned out to be the first real hot weekend in England this year. I even had to go and purchase suncreen! A bit of history for you; the Titanic left from Southampton although it was built in Ireland. After a night of cards and catching up we took the ferry across to the Isle of Wight and drove around the Island exploring Ryde, Yarmouth and The Needles (rock formation - see picture). For golf lovers the Isle of Wight has 8 golf courses! We camped the night at Whitecliff ... read more

After suggesting to Hel that she might like to embark on a road trip with Alison and I (and provide the car) we set off on Friday, 19th to the Isle of Wight (thanks again Hel!). Popularly known as 'The Garden Isle', the Isle of Wight is a 147 sq mile island off the southcoast of England. It boasts a comprehensive range of scenery from rugged chalk rock faces to sandy bathing beaches (if you are inclined to swim in freezing untamed seas knowing there's a good chance it will be your last). A fabulous weekend of touring and eating. Even the near death experience of almost blowing off the cliff at Arun Bay (moments after taking photo 4) and becoming shark bait couldn't taint it. A big thanks to the proprietors of our B&B who ... read more

Well, I'm in. Felt like the proverbial spare part a lot of the time, not wanting to touch anything in case the guy 100ft (yes, 100ft!) up the mast suddenly came crashing down to the deck. Did my fair share of grinding, which comes with the territory when you're built like a rugby player. How do you think that guy got up the mast? Learnt a bit about the water ballast system, and had a safety briefing. Found out where the 'triangle of death' is, and also discovered that the 'first aid kit' includes a body bag! Nice touch. The accommodation was pretty much as expected, i.e. a bunk, and, err, that's it. The only slight luxury is the curtain across the loo. Also learnt to pack spinnakers, which I assume is similar to packing a ... read more

Well, what I thought was going to be a chilled day, meeting the skipper and crew for a look around the boat, followed by a pie and a pint, has turned into two days of sail training! Got to be at Cowes ready to set sail by 10am tomorrow, which meant a lot of running about for my dear old mum yesterday, collecting foul weather gear for me etc. Same again Sunday. Well, at least it'll show what I'm made of I guess. Fingers crossed I don't embarrass myself.... read more

Well, I've just signed up to help deliver a 60ft Volvo racing yacht from Cowes to the Canaries, non-stop. It'll either be the best 8-10 days of my life, or I'll never want to see another boat again as long as I live. Watch this space.... read more

A leisurely start to the day again. We were dropped at the Ventnor Botanical Gardens, which were built on the site of a former TB hospital. The gardens were arranged down a hill, giving graceful terraces and views. The first section I visited was medicinal plants, but they gave no information on the uses of some quite common plants, so it wasn’t as interesting as it might have been. My eye and my camera were drawn by some elegantly tall, showy flowers of red, yellow, and orange. After some searching for their name, I discovered them to be Canna Lilies , yet another plant I’ve now seen from books I have read. The “Black Knight” variety was splendid with very dark red/green leaves and brilliant orange/red flowers. They rose over my head. From here we walked ... read more

Free day today. So, I went off to do what everyone said I must do, which was to see Osborne House. Queen Victoria and her family stayed there, and it was design by Prince Albert. I caught the bus exactly as advised by Betty Wood, a wonderful character aged somewhere between “71 and over 80”, depending on which bit of gossip you listen to. Only Jacob had the nerve to ask her, and got the “71” answer, but she said something about the war, imply she worked then. She did work for 45 years as a military history researcher. On our walks, I began taking advantage of her flawless knowledge of botany. She also knows a lot about the Isle of Wight from coming here often, and lots more from travelling all over England. This she ... read more

Rain all morning and mist all afternoon. At least the air isn’t as cold as in the Lake District, so my new jacket kept me warm and dry enough – also wore my new gaiters. Lots of mud, so they proved their worth. I did the short walk, as walking 9 miles rather than 6 ½ miles seemed daft. As usual, we were the last to be dropped off the bus. We had about 40 minutes to look around Brading , a small town with a short street of shops. There were several tourist attractions, such as a Doll Museum and Shop, Wax Museum, Old Town Hall Museum, and so on. I walked around St Mary's Church . It was built in the twelfth century but is reported to be the site of the first Christian ... read more

We started off near a prison today, in Parkhurst Forest. From how people refer to it, I assume the prison is a major establishment. Certainly the “forest paths” are wide enough to take a vehicle if needed. There are narrow, untended paths angling off this maintained one. Betty Wood volunteered to be “back marker”, to keep track of stragglers. As I was videoing flowers, I asked her if she knew the names, and she did – every one. This made an interesting walk for me, although the others may not have enjoyed it too much because there was very little to see. We walked quite a way through a town – quite ordinary, except for the piglets that looked so cute. After this we tramped along various types of paths to the River Medina . Here ... read more
