After witnessing yesterday‘s epic traffic/gridlock at Waterloo Bridge, my brain would simply NOT shut off during the night, trying to calculate the best way for me to catch this morning’s train to Winchester. Every mode had risks: the Tube involved carrying my large, heavy case on stairs at each end, all surface-modes involved rush hour. So, after about three hours’ sleep, I showered, packed up, woke Fae for a hug, and took off for Waterloo Station at dawn. Naturally, I caught the first bus and arrived a ridiculous two hours early. However, I made the most of my time, ensconcing myself at a luxury mezzanine cafe, enjoying Eggs Florentine and a latte while watching the mayhem on the station floor below.... Tonight I’m in a cozy Air BnB room near the rail station, and have spent ... read more

On 16th May we caught the No 38 bus at Petersfield and headed for Chawton. The bus went past Selborne where we visited previous day. We got off at the pub, opposite to Jane Austen’s House. Like Selborne, there were a lot of thatched roof houses in Chawton. Jane Austen’s House Museum We entered the shop and paid for the admission fees. Jane Austen is one of Britain’s best loved authors and lived in this brick house for 8 years. This was the house where she wrote and revised all her major works such as Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. Despite its countryside location, there were a lot of visitors.. We were asked to enter into the house from the Drawing room, west side of the house. To commemorate her prolific ... read more

We got on the 10:15 bus for Alton on 15 May. The No.38 brought us to Selborne in 40 minutes. We got off on the B3006 road, and walked past the village café and the village hall. There were a number of thatched roof houses as described on Gilbert White’s book. Gilbert White House with Oates Collections Dr Gilbert White’s house was on the B3006 road. We paid £10 each for the admission fees. At the Orientation Room, we were informed that Gilbert White House was the home for Revered Gilbert White and visitors can find his and his family’s memorabilia, and because of the later extension, the house acquired collections of documents of two very different explorers of the natural world: Captain Lawrence Oates who undertook the epic journey to the Antarctica with Captain Scott; ... read more

Petersfield Earlier this year I read Dr Gilbert White’s ‘Natural History of Selborne’. His beautiful illustrations of the village and countryside and descriptions of birds attracted me; we decided to visit there for our holiday. However, Selborne doesn’t have the train station. The nearest town is Petersfield; we decided to stay in Petersfield from 13th to 18th May. The Old Drum Mark found ‘The Old Drum’ through Booking.com. This B/B hotel was conveniently located both to the railway station and to the town centre. We soon found our hotel as we walked down the street from the railway station on 13th May. The Old Drum is one of the historic buildings introduced in the leaflet of Petersfield Blue Plaque Trail. Petersfield’s history began fro... read more

Our journey begins; a return to Malaysia We left home on Tuesday under unseasonal grey skies. Murcia airport is right by the sea on the Mar Menor, the ‘little sea’ next to the Mediterranean on the southern Costa Blanca. We have lived in this part of Spain for twenty years now and it is the first time we have seen white caps on dark grey/green waves on the Mar Menor; on the Med yes, but never before on the little sea. Despite this and a bumpy start, the journey to Heathrow was fine. One forgets how good BA short-haul flights are compared to the usual economy lines (more leg room and a food tray that is not in your lap!) We landed ten minutes early and the rucksacks came through quickly. A good start! The weather ... read more

Friday March 30,2018 Awoke to rainy weather in Portsmouth,UK! I gave a hug to my Aunt&Uncle and said”Good Morning.” I patted their black Labrador named Cilla. After having a lovely breakfast and a wonderful cup of Earl Grey tea, I got dressed and ready for our day. “A Beastly, yucky and dreary day in Portsmouth!” Aunt Philippa, uncle Jeremy and I got excited to head to Waitrose and an Art Exhibit in a revamped Silo, about 30 minutes away. Waitrose is a wonderful and upscale british grocery store like Sainsbury. One of the few unique things is a DIY Scanner where you scan your grocery items, which is fun! We then headed back home to get lunch ready and relax a bit. Philippa and I took Cilla for a walk on their country road which was great because ... read more

Our main reason for coming to Portsmouth was to see the Mary Rose -Henry VIII‘s battleship- and the Victory- Nelson’s battleship- at the Portsmouth Naval dockyard. Today was the day we had set aside for the visit. After breakfast, we walked from Southsea down to the dockyard. It took us about 30 minutes. Unfortunately the weather was again overcast and a bit drizzly. The drizzle cleared, but it remained grey and with a cold wind for most of the day. We had thought of also going up the Spinnaker tower, but we didn’t think we would get a great view today, so abandoned that idea. Once at the dockyard, we looked at the plan of the exhibits and decided to start with the Mary Rose, because it was the farthest exhibit from the entrance. The ship ... read more

Today was a driving day. We left Wells after breakfast and made some stops on our way to Southhampton. The first was at Stourhead. This is a big property with beautiful gardens. There were already quite a few people in the carpark as we parked our car, and some already in the gardens. The house did not open until 11am, so we started in the gardens. The weather was fine and the sun was coming out, so a good day! The gardens were lovely to walk through. A large lake invited us to take photos including the reflection of the buildings and trees on the water. Around the lake there are many small buildings- grottos, temples and cottages. We were surprised that you couldn’t see the house from the gardens, or the gardens with the pond ... read more

Jean and I were up early to get packed for our 8:30am departure with Christine. We drove for a few hours until we got to the New Forest, a national park where wild horses roam around. We saw several standing in the middle of the road holding up traffic and standing on the front nature strips of people living in the villages around the New Forest. Our first stop was Buckler’s Hard, a historic maritime village west of Southampton. Hard was used to identify a hard surface on the shore, perfect for pulling boats up on. This was where several of Admiral Nelson’s ships were built and repaired at the end of the 1700s/early 1800s. We also went on a 40 minute cruise around the Beaulieu River estuary, which is privately owned and a breeding ground ... read more
