On 16th May we caught the No 38 bus at Petersfield and headed for Chawton. The bus went past Selborne where we visited previous day. We got off at the pub, opposite to Jane Austen’s House. Like Selborne, there were a lot of thatched roof houses in Chawton. Jane Austen’s House Museum We entered the shop and paid for the admission fees. Jane Austen is one of Britain’s best loved authors and lived in this brick house for 8 years. This was the house where she wrote and revised all her major works such as Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. Despite its countryside location, there were a lot of visitors.. We were asked to enter into the house from the Drawing room, west side of the house. To commemorate her prolific ... read more

Today we arrived at Heathrow and as usual had to walk half way across Heathrow from the plane to customs and immigration. It seems every time we come here, our aircraft is parked at the furthest extremity. We cleared customs with no problems and then had a cup of coffee and went to get the shuttle to collect the car. We were taken to the Avis depot and within 30 minutes were on our way in a blue Peugeot 207. Nice little car. We then headed off around Heathrow Airport to pick up the motorway and head south to Basingstoke in Hampshire. We had the guy at Avis print us off an AA route listing of where we wanted to go in Basingstoke but he printed us off a route to someplace else, Kettering, we think. ... read more

I saw one of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen in Hampshire England. My Jane Austen class went on our study trip to Winchester and Chawton. It was amazing and one of the best days of my entire time here. We started out at the house on College Street in Winchester where Jane Austen spent her last days and died in Cassandra’s arms. Though we did not get to go inside the house because it is a private home it was interesting to see this house that she spent her last months in. Cassandra had brought Jane to Winchester in 1817 to seek medical care but the doctors could barely help with the pain much less with the real problem (which is now believed to be Addison’s disease). The house is a simple building ... read more

It’s my first day in England - a business destination that will be mixed with a little pleasure. I am here for customer golf! The customer arranged for a taxi (BMW 520 for taxi?) from Airport Direct to pick us up (traveling with Po and Anne) at Heathrow. Within seconds, I recognized the driver’s accent. Sure enough, he is from Scotland … Gourock of all places. I used to spend a lot of time in Greenock, Gourock and Largs. So I had a nice chat with him as we headed southwest on Highway A3. He is a Celtics supporter and so not surprisingly, he does not know the most famous Scots out of Gourock - David Pickett. Forty five minutes or so into our journey, the taxi took Griggs Green exit off A3 toward Liphook and ... read more

Larni, Lynne and Judy left before 7.30am and had an easy run until the we left the M11 and headed onto the London ringroad, M25 but our dream run soon ended as we found ourselves in heavy traffic all going in the direction of London. It was after 10.30 am when we finally arrived at Eggers School in Alton where Lynne was warmly greeted by her friend Felicity Martin, head teacher at Eggers. We chatted with Felicity before being taken on a tour of the school. Felicity walked us into classrooms where she asked demonstrated how students understood the core values of the school and that there was zero tolerance for bullying. Students were enthusiastic when asked about their school. There was a very strong ethos about doing your best and determining targets. “Attitude equals altitude”. ... read more
