We have been back in Darwin 3 weeks now and time is as usual flying by! I wanted to do a final blog of our UK travels but may now be hard pressed to remember what we actually did during those last 2 weeks. We had not intended to explore Scotland on this trip as we thought we would not have the time but with several days to spare before having to drop the motorhome off we headed quickly up the motorway, something we had so far avoided as much as possible and arrived in the pretty area of the Lake District in no time. Had a ball at a lovely old pub with lots of others watching Euro Soccer and cheering Wales on. On to Glasgow which has certainly been transformed since my last visit ... read more

A short entry for today, only because I have a few pictures to share, or I would have skipped. We spent today with family in the Manchester area. I got to meet second and third cousins (i.e. my mom's cousin's and their children) and saw my great-aunt who I haven't seen in many years. It was quite a nice day, I enjoyed myself. I saw cow horses (see picture) and we went to this nice pub next to a neat looking church for a chat. Dinner was at an Italian restaurant with good food and some birthday embarassment. The build up to this journey has created a curious number of lists and countdowns for both of us. The lists are numerous and scattered all over our house, some being added to daily, some just being rewritten every so often in neater script, thus providing us with a sense of doing something while actually just internally procrastinating. The countdowns however are proving more interesting emotionally as none of them seem to run in a straight direction. One of the biggest has for us both has been the countdown from work. How do you hang up a uniform that has identified you for the last ten years? Has influenced your world views, expanded and shuttered your horizons (ok, sometimes in ways you wish it hadn’t), provided friendships and laughter and of course proved the downfall of ... read more

I think most people start their travel journals at the beginning. At the beginning of their trip anyway. However, for me personally that doesn’t seem like the right place - or at least I will forever write this prologue in mentally to make the picture complete for me. It seems like it’s only fair to share. A long time ago now, more than 10 years anyway and whilst at university, I wrote a lot. I wrote journals and tales about funny nights out or events with friends. Most involved vodka and orange and the pages these tales were written on were often covered in drool, kebab or fag ends by the morning. All the same, I lovingly kept them, although now somewhat better preserved on a soon to be extinct floppy disc. I wrote those tales ... read more

Anyway, the night out was held in Lees in the various pubs and almost everyone turned up who I had managed to get hold of. ... read more
