It was only 12 months ago, that I would have instinctively booked some aeroplane tickets for our usual autumn jaunt. Last year, we were wandering around the boulevards of Lviv and enjoying the Indian summer. I was eagerly awaiting my attendance at the Lviv derby to add to collection of Eastern European footballing obscurities. My spies in Moscow tell me that the weather is once again unseasonably warm in that part of the world, but what was once a normal aspiration is no longer possible. I set my sights on something closer to home, but somewhat more exotic than my recent trip to Ponte Carlo. TFB is following the science, or so he claims and was on the verge of introducing a tier system of risk to be given to each part of the country. There ... read more

Thought I'd write my first ever blog entry to get some practice. My flight leaves London Gatwick at 10am on Saturday 24th June. I am currently trying to work out what I need to take and what I actually have room for. This is quite tricky as I am flying to Delhi and then joining an organised tour with, I believe 9 other people catching a train north to Kalka at the start of the foothills where I transfer to a 'toy' train as they call them in India. This will take up to Shimla. This is a narrow gauge train taking some five hours. The 97km train trip passes through 103 tunnels, 18 stations and over 24 bridges. Fifty years in the making, this incredible feat of engineering was completed in 1897. Then after we ... read more

The BBA V3 is ripping along towards its final days and our three days in West Wales has gone in a blur. The wind and the rain really performed overnight and it is not that often we are awoken by weather events going on outside but last night was one of them. The wind has died away a bit but there are still showers passing by as we get ourselves ready for the relatively short drive to Selsley West near Stroud in the Cotswolds for another three night stop. Checking the weather ahead though is interesting as the weather office is predicting up to 30C for next Wednesday in London! We have been very comfortable in the loft above the garage at the rear of Clive’s property. The Air BnB page showed he had a wife ... read more

We stayed local today with a visit to Stratford Park in Stroud. Em immediately spied the playground so that was the first port of call before heading to the Museum in the Park which displays the local history around Stroud. From Neolithic encampments to Roman occupation and right through the medieval period and industrialisation, the displays provided a great picture of life in the region. There was a treasure hunt for Em which kept her interested for most of the tour around the museum and then we headed back to the playground for lunch. Em made a friend, Georgia, who helped her get on the swings and climb the slides. As it was a much nicer day than previously, we couldn’t pass up our last opportunity to sample the local Winstone’s ice cream shop next door ... read more

Today we drove over to Bath to see the Roman baths. We had found the Park’n’Ride station and when we got there, Em was excited to see the ride to town would be on a double decker bus! Bath is only a small town and the main atractions are all within easy walking distance. First we went to the Roman baths which are housed in a museum building showing all the excavations, some of which are still ongoing. The water steams in the cool air as it bubbles up. Apparently it gets up to about 95 degrees Celsius deep down in the earth before cooling as it rises. The ruins are all housed inside the museum and show the extent of the baths, dressing rooms and hot, warm and cold rooms just like in other roman ... read more

Today we were off to see the really old stuff – the standing stones of Avebury and Stonehenge. Avebury, the largest henge in Britain, is much more accessible than Stonehenge and you can actually wander right amongst the stones and touch them too. There are lots of stones still standing and many missing as the early Christians in the area believed the site was related to the devil so they started pulling the stones down. One crushed a man as it fell so they thought the devil was annoyed and stopped pulling them down. It is a fascinating place even if not as monumental as Stonehenge. There were a bunch of strange folks holding some ceremony and all meditating at one point, with one guy crawling and slapping the ground – brave considering there is lots ... read more
