And so the last day was here. We were up and at em, leaving on time as planned (still can't get used to that bit) and heading the hour and a half north to Dieppe. The second surprise was that google maps person was a boy. And then a girl. And then a boy, not sure what was going on there! We made it in plenty of time, getting confused by the 'new to us' port but after a few interesting bridges/junctions/turns we were waiting patiently in the queue. We made friends with a dexter lookalike called Simba (it was all we could do not to 'accidentally' put him in our car) and watched as several people 'forgot' to get on their cars in time to board! This time we made sure to remember exactly where ... read more

Spent the day today exploring Brighton - where the English go for summer holidays! Was much brighter this morning, so we could see that there is a wind farm off the coast that was invisible yesterday! The sun appeared (sort of) after breakfast, so we headed for the pier - an amusement park on the pier over the water. Wandered to the end (very windy) and back, still lots of people around even thought it was cold. The central part had inside games (video games etc) and also lots of games that seemed to be like a miniature version of a chocolate machine, but with coins - you fed in money, in the hope that the coins would push the coins already in there, out to you - seemed a little bizarre, but there were lots ... read more

Long day today - left Calahorra at 7am for the 2 hour drive to Bilbao (we were a little early for our flight, could have slept a bit longer). Then our 2 hour flight from Bilbao to London. Got stuck on the tarmac in London (in the rain) as a plane was stuck at the gate we were meant to use! While we were waiting, saw the new Qantas Dreamliner taxi past - the one that does the Perth to London direct (Kate didn't believe me, had to check with Matt!) Then 2 hours of who knows what to organise the pre-booked hire car! Then the 2 hour drive through the rain and the holiday traffic from London to Brighton. Brighton was cold, windy and rainy, but we could see the beach (even if it wasn't ... read more

We travel tomorrow taxi to Gatwick, flight to Bordeaux, train to Bayonne, train to St Jean pied de port. Planning an early start on Wed morning as we climb from 200m to 1200m over the first 40k then 35k into Pamplona. It looks like it will be raining most of the day. Keen to just get that first climb under the belt.... read more

Got the bikes further prepared today, decided to add an extra water bottle carrier and because of the panniers; a bike stand. We will strap the sleeping back on top of the pannier rack will enclose in the bike air transit bags, to keep the rain out. Pick up Bob at the airport tomorrow and we will work out exactly what we'll be carrying; panniers and how to carry the disassembled bikes to the airport.... read more

Decing last minute on where to go, when you´ve got just one day off from work is not really that hard, mainly because of the fact that you have less choices. So I chose Brighton..., never been there and was quite excited to see the city. When you look it up on the internet the first thing you see is the Brighton Pier. Journey from Windsor-Claphan Junction-Brighton took 1,5h, which was not long at all. Once you arrive you get to walk a long street leading up to the sea and the famous Brighton Pier. Whenever I travel somewhere I tend not to expect anything from the country or place, just for the sake of not being upset later. When we came to the coast it was windy and cold, but apart from that the view ... read more

I've been a busy bee! Katie has come to visit and we're having a great time. It was wonderful showing her around Oxford. She ate a lot of potatoes and seemed to really like it. We then went to London. We visited the infamous Platform 9 3/4. It was funny when I asked the train station lady where it was she replied "I think just around the corner. They keep moving it". Tell me what other platforms can be moved liked that!! Katie and I walked around Hyde park and went to Camden. This later part was bad for the health of my wallet but SO good for my soul. Near Hyde Park we saw all kinds of luxury cars and hotels. We even saw a mini-cooper covered in mohair. I don't get it either.... We ... read more

Aiiieeeee it's been 4 months! Good thing writing this blog isn't my job; I would've fired myself ages ago. Here is the news: the reason I am writing this now is that I've finished my dissertation 2 weeks before the deadline (shouts of applause) and am thus reduced to the tedium of applying for jobs and looking for a flat. That's right! We're moving out - the landlady wants to sell, and we don't want to freeze in the next few months. Summer, however, has been most excellent: a brief retrospective at the calendar reveals that we have done a week's tango festivalling, Mon's been back to NZ, I have ridden the mighty CBR around France and Spain, and we've just been to Bruges - I am in fact writing this under the influence of Belgian ... read more

Today is Father's Day and I am countries away from my hero of a father. I am sitting here in bed listening to Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel and just now thinking about the subject I wanted to discuss.. Before I came to the UK I was so weary of how family oriented I am and how horrible it would possibly be being so far away from my family. Away from the safe hugs of my father and the loving gestures of my mother stroking my brown hair or commenting on how long it is. Away from listening to my little brother blow up those darn zombies in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Away from seeing my older sister's bakery blossom or my brother survive the real world after his college graduation, which i ... read more
