April 21, 2012 – Back in the UK Here we are, back in the UK. After the madness of New York, it is wonderful to be back in England – where life is slightly less frenetic! We picked up our hire car (booked a Ford Focus, got an Audi – woohoo!) and drove north. Thank you, Google Maps! We got as far as Yorkshire, before deciding to call it a day. We found a lovely hotel in York, and we'll have a look around York tomorrow before heading on to Scotland. Damian got onto a “last minute” booking website, and found us a 5 star hotel right in the centre of Edinburgh for £60 a night!! We'll stay in Edinburgh itself for 2 nights, then head to St Andrews. So my bags are packed and I'm ready to go... And how hard is it to pack 8 months worth of stuff into one bag??!...The last week has been spent packing, unpacking, filtering out more and more stuff until finally everything fits...And I'm still probably taking far too much according to all the backpacker blogs I've been reading... They say take 6 tops (I'm taking 14), they say take 2 pairs of trousers (I'm taking 5), they say take 7 pairs of knickers (come on!...I've managed to cram 15 in!...and I'm sure I could still get more)...And every single person I've spoke to that's done this has said "Less is more, You'll end up throwing half your stuff away cos it weighs too much"...Well yes, I imagine that may well be the case but it's good ... read more

After 20 minutes of packing the car, taking everything out again and then repacking it in order to fit all our suitcases, cooking equipment, and Christmas pressies in, we finally manage to set off for about 10.30am. We have a long drive ahead of us today, all the way from Glasgow down to Hull, in the snow (at least it’s good practice for wee Charlie). The sat nav says it should take about 4 – 4 ½ hours, but as it’s been snowing heavily and we don’t know what the roads will be like down in England, we give ourselves an extra 2 hours just in case. I’ve bagsied the UK part of the driving, as the last time I drove on the right hand side of the road it ended with a tyre being skelped ... read more

Hi everyone here's the last blog. Sunday 4th After the rather unfortunate incident with the irate Swiss bloke we drove off and crossed over the Rhine at Schaffhausen Switzerland, after just a few miles we were soon into Germany and heading into the black forest. We were familiar with this area having been here 3 years ago so we decided to revisit a camp site we stayed on back in 2008 in the city of Freiburg. Being back on familiar territory and meeting up with familiar travellers in Glen and Linda who after having had 4 months back in the UK were out for a summer trip, we made plans to stay in Freiburg for 4 days. Over those days we walked around the lovely city with it's medieval old town and it's streamlets that run ... read more

Gday all Well the hotel is still having problems with their internet so this is a day late. Yesterday we picked up Jules' mum Barbara and Aunty Joyce and went for a drive. First stop was Withernsea where one of the attractions is the old pier. The pier started off at 1196 ft but with the rough seas it was a target for disabled boats in 1880 2 vessels hit the pier and and knocked off 200ft of it then after it was rebuilt using timber instead of steel and then storms washed away the repaired bit in 1882 not repaired then but still in use. In 1890 after another ship hit and knocked off half of what was remaining another ship then hit it in 1893 and all that was left was 50 ft after ... read more

Hiya all. Sorry we haven't been updating but the internet was down at the hotel and we couldn't log on. Plus it's been family visits and stuff, which is great for me but probably boring for everyone else! lol So.... what have we been up to. We had a lovely relaxing time in London. On Friday we headed to Watford to pick up the car. We have a Vauxhall Meriva. It's not a bad car though Mark tells me it's got no pickup.. lol.. I wouldn't know because I don't drive over here.. way too much traffic for me. Mark handles it fairly well, something to do with driving in Victoria I'd say. Well after picking up the car we headed off on the M25 making our way to see Leslie and Jo. We had a ... read more

It,s a somewhat dismal day which started with rain and seems to want to continue so. Just right to sit in the local library and do a bit off blogging.Ten days ago i left Edinburgh and shortly after reached The Moorfoot Hills, which were over 400mtr. high but very easy to cycle because the climb was very graduel. The view from there was magnificent . Edinburgh could be clearly seen in the distance on that beautiful day . I continued to Melrose, taking a coffee and scone break in Innerleithen. On the 4th.August my stay in Scotland ended in Berwick upon Tweed where my Koga Bike was treated to a new chain. It has been a lovely time spent with my wife in the Highland where we had a little more than our fair share of rain(Isabel will agree). ... read more
