Dropped Margaret off at railway to travel back to Leeds. Due to poor weather predictions (and plenty of recommendations) we cancelled going to Scotland and went to Durham instead. Lovely place. Found a pub close to town for accommodation. Daniel and I were feeling a bit crook so just the girls ventured out in the afternoon.... read more

Day Four-May 12,2010 Today was the day that began the root of my trip. A few years ago,my mother had acquired some historical documents and traced part of her family back to England-specifically a town in northern England called Thornley. When I was deciding to take another transatlantic journey,I chose London with the idea of visiting this town in mind. Some preliminary research indicated that Thornley was a suburb of Durham,a college town two hours north of London (by train). I planned a day trip up to Durham, and in order to get the most out of the day,I had to get a train leaving quite early.I found that the hotel was prompt with their wake up calls and was on the tube for Kings Cross Station at 0615. For some frustrating reason, the Circle Line doesn't ... read more

Evening everyone, Here we are in beautiful Durham - we’ve only just arrived so nothing to tell you about the place except the B&B is lovely and Steve has just locked himself out of the house while I was in the bath! We had 2 lovely nights in Edinburgh, although the B&B was a bit naff - bit old and manky and the bathroom & toilet need a good clean - but the beds were comfy and we were close to everything. It was absolutely FREEZING on the morning we went adventuring - I was starting to lament the fact that I had packed coats, not yesterday!! We rugged up and hit the high street catching the city tour bus for a lap of the old town. Once we had been around once we settled on ... read more

At The Ship Inn, Low Worsall we had a meal. At the meal were Brian's 3 sisters: Jean, Trish and Liz; Jean's daughter Helen; My mum and dad (Marion and John). Brian thought that the occasion was due to his sister Trish staying with his best sister Liz. But really it was just to get the family together to surprise him with where he was going for his 50th birthday. It took some heavy persuading from Liz and Trish during the day as he was just getting over stomach trouble after our holiday in Gran Canaria the week before. See the video on how it went - he was totally gobsmacked! Quotes of the day from Brian "that picture looks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge!" and "I'm goosed"... read more

Well, I've arrived safely here in Durham. After the long flight, I waddled into the airport with all of my baggage. Having planned on being alone and having to manage all of my baggage I had carefully selected my large hiking backpack, an enormous rolling duffel bag, and a rolling carry-on bag (on which I could rest the smaller bag containing my computer and other electronics). I was all ready to have to open my baggage at customs, and so had chosen to situate everything on a rolling cart rather than set myself up (logistically this could take several minutes) only to have to do it again. However, no one even blinked an eye at me as I maneuvered out of the secured areas. So, I rolled myself out of the gate (eyeing the signs for ... read more
