Day 6 Durham - Newcastle We decided to take a lazy day in preparation for our night out. Later in the afternoon, Fiona and Adam wanted to try out their new kite. Flying a kite ... yeah we can do this !!! We walked over to a wind farm near their house and gave this kite business a try. Even on a wind farm, we did not manage to get the darn thing up in the air. I now have more admiration for those boys in The Kite Runner. After a 2 hour nap, we got ready and left for Newcastle. We went out to this place called World Headquarters, Curtis Mayfield House. Apart from having a bi-polar DJ, we had a great time. We closed down the bar at 4 and took a taxi back ... read more

Well after more than a week of being sick with a very nasty bug, both adrian and I are finally on the recovering end... we were pretty much bed ridden for the entire time, it was like the worst hangover ever but without the alcohol... however we did tread on, and with a lot of horrid cough medicine and plenty of paracetamol, we are on track again. It's always crap being sick, but worse when you're on supposed to be on holiday. I missed out on the beautiful medieval banquet at Lumley Castle which the guys from Chester Le had organised way before we arrived. They had all planned a surprise for us on Friday night with a formal medieval banquet at the castle where Adrian and I were supposed to be the Baron and Baroness ... read more

Day 1 Heathrow - Durham (Northeast England) My flight went according to plan. Smooth sailing all the way. I took a bus from Heathrow to Downtown London. Slept all the way there so I still have no clue what London looks like. Figured out my route to Durham then had to pay 20p (40 cents) to relieve my bowels. Everybody always complains on how expensive England is well I got a good first taste of it then. The bus stations in England and the bus stations in Canada are not that different (Canadian trash vs English trash -pretty similar). My bus ride was long (longer than my flight by an hour) but I slept like a baby thanks to Air Canada (I stole a pillow and blanket on my way out of the plane). Durham I ... read more

It's 10.30pm now and we've been up since 6.30am this morning, so I will keep this short and simple. The last few days have been spent with loads of Adrian's family, most of the pictures were taken at Mandy's place about half an hour from Chester Le. Her place is gorgeous and backs into this lovely pathway leading to a farm with stream, sheep, and lots of beautiful greenery. They treated us to a traditional English meal of Yorkshire Pudding with meat and gravy which was quite nice actually. Once again, most of the family was there, and the weather was once again beautiful and sunny. Yesterday, we had a fantastic day out with Joe (big joe and little joe), Sue, Carl, Mim, Jack and Elsie who showed us around where Adrian's mum and nan used ... read more

Ok, so two days ago we met up with Ron who had hired a car to drive up to Durham to spend a bit over a week here and visit Adrian's family. The drive from London was a long 5 or so hours so we were hungry and tired by the time we arrived here. Adrian's family lives in Chester Le Street, which I later learnt is in fact a small suburb, not a street. This place is quaint and cute, with a very close knit village feel to it. Everyone seems to know everyone and there are plenty of trees and parkland everywhere. The weather has again been superb since we arrived, which we expected and were told to be much worse. The first night we arrived, we were greeted by the start of Adrian's ... read more

Friday 9 May - Day 13 and another 13 miles! We continued up the Tees - as we ascended the scenery became gradually more and more wild and remote. We spent an hour clambering over boulder-fields and scree, which was very hazardous in places. From time to time we saw kestrels hovering above the impressive Falcon Clints - which was a welcome sight and also gave us a chance to stop and catch our breath as we carefully made our way over the fallen rocks by the River Tees. On rounding a corner, we then came upon the perfectly named "Cauldron Snout" - a fuming torrent of water crashing down a series of cascading waterfalls - possibly even more spectacular than High Force, but not many people make it up this far (again, you can't get ... read more

Geo: 54.7674, -1.57948I had some time before my train so I stuck my bag in a locker and went for a walk. Leaving the hostel, I noticed a huge line-up of people checking out - glad that I managed to check out before all of them. I was also glad that I booked my train ticket online - it only cost me 10 GBP, but could have cost me 50 GBP if I bought it direct from the ticket office. I tried going to the Museum on the Mound, but it wasn't open yet so I took a quick walk down the Royal Mile and went to the Museum of Scotland again. Its terrace is supposed to have great views, but it was closed yesterday due to the weather. And again ... it was closed ... ... read more
