Barnard Castle in the mist
I wonder if Dominic saw mist! Well day 2 and it is still glorious weather. Mike had a shower in the motorhome this morning, the first time the shower has been used. Probably because I was brought up camping in a tent and we always had to use the shower and toilet blocks on the campsites, I just automatically go to the shower block.
We even wash up now in the motorhome sink instead of going to the pot washing block, another thing we used to have to do as kids - think I am really getting into the motorhome life ha ha.
So today we are going to walk to who knows where but possibly the opposite way from Barnard Castle town centre I think - will keep you posted. This part of the world is really pretty. Hey ho a girl can change her mind so we walked into Barnard Castle and it looked so picturesque from the Weir with a bit of mist. After walking around the market that is always on Wednesday - if I am honest it was like any market around selling the same type of things - I decided that we would walk to Egglestone Abbey. Now that's
a challenge - as most of you know I do not know my right from my left and trying to follow a map well you can just imagine if I think it is one way you can bet your bottom dollar it is the other way. Well I did not fail and had poor Mike trudging through fields the wrong way, up roads the wrong way and I think we did another couple of kms - I decided to use google maps and when it said the destination was on the right 0.25kms away when it got to 0.3kms you would have thought it was a clue but hey ho no it wasn't - bimbo comes to mind but only I can say that!
After walking around the abbey ruins we decided that it was probably time to return to Barnard Castle and get a brew. Everyone should now be impressed as, guess what, leaving chalk marks helps when you have to get back. I did think of leaving crumbs but being an ex girl guide (I did not make the full journey of being a girl guide as I got myself and my sister thrown out - but
that tale is for another day) I thought they might be eaten and we would then be going around in circles.
We find a really lovely shop and spoke to the lady who owned it as she had memorabilia ie post cards and tea towels about our renouned Dominic Cummings, so we asked has he made any difference to the trade in Barnard Castle - well she said it has made a huge difference and she would love him to come back. She also mentioned that one gentleman from London came up and asked an estate agent to sell him 3 properties which totalled £1,000,000. When the estate agent said "don't you even want to see them?" he replied "no, they are going to be holiday rents and I will make money on Dominic" and rubbed his hands with glee.
So we find a nice little pub called the Old Well and guess what beer they had on "Cummings & Going", everyone is cashing in on our Dominic, ha ha - of course Mike had to have a pint of "Cummings & Goings". We then found another little gem of a gallery that had local artists, one of
Postcard, ha ha
Might have to go back and buy more them being Julia Roxburgh. Well, her ceramics were absolutely stunning so we brought two candlestick holders. I now know that Julia returned to working with ceramics after her theatrical career, working on well known productions including Cats.
So we decide to get a spot of lunch and went to a local bakery that baked its own bread on site and ordered two sandwiches - which were so large we have had to take one back for our tea - method in my madness as now do not have to cook!
