Time for something completely different For most of my life the concept of caving has been an intriguing yet terrifying prospect. Earlier in the year I purchased a voucher for an outdoor activities day for Gemma and I for £50 instead of £260, among the activities listed was caving, climbing, gorge walking and abseiling. Gemma was keen to try the climbing and I the caving. We'd completely forgotten that we had booked onto it until I received an email earlier this week with consent forms and injury waivers to sign. We arrived at the predetermined meeting point in Calver and I waited for everyone else, we then drove up to Grindleford to a natural rock wall. I was pleasantly surprised as I thought we'd be at a climbing centre. This was just a wall a short ... read more

With a new puppy addition to the family this year and the first Christmas Martin and I would be on our own and not overseas travelling somewhere, we decided to head somewhere fairly close for Christmas this year. Luckily we had our furrbabies for company - !! The end result was a cottage in the Peak District, somewhere we’d wanted to see for a while. So, dogs and Christmas treats in the car, off we headed the Friday before Christmas. It was somewhat surreal being on our own for Christmas for the first time, but a lovely holiday none the less… every day was pretty much the same… exploring all over the countryside on walks with Oslo and Sabie, (introducing Sabie to sheep!), catching up on sleep and DVDs in front of the roaring fire, over ... read more

Hartington - Peak District 20th - 22nd November, 2009 The English countryside is beautiful even when it is raining! It's always nice to get out of London and even when it is starting to get cold and wintry, the hostels are always warm and toasty. We found a great hostel in the Peak District in the village of Hartington called Hartington Hall. Hartington Hall is a manor house and was certainly very grand. It was very cosy with log fires in its own bar and dining area. We also made use of the self-catering kitchen which was in a separate building (once a barn) next to the lambs, goats and chooks. The rain did come down but we still ventured out of the hostel for a wander through the nearby hills. Lots of farmland surrounding the ... read more

What can I say about the contrast of a city in China with a population nearly 17 million, my hometown in China with a population of 6.2 million, a walk with 2 great friends across stanedge edge in gale force winds with changing weather at the speed of light and a rainbow stretching across the entire expanse of the horizon and London? Four fantastic places, 3 chinese dogs, and 6 fantastic friends from 2 continents all within one week. Suzhou, Shanghai, Stanedge and London - it's messing with my head. ... read more

22 August, (Saturday) Derby Jerry has the next 2 weeks off. Today he drove us around the countryside. Kirsten had been staying with Jerry's cousin, Nessa, at their pub in Sheffield and we went to pick her up. First we went to Chesterfield, Jerry was just going to drive past but I was keen for a photo (parking was a huge pain but eventually we managed it and I got a great photo of the Crooked Spire on St Mary's church apparently caused by the devil sitting on it! Then we were off to Sheffield. Nessa is just lovely - so glad Kirsten has her as I think she really needs people like that in her life, Rob & Jerry so preoccupied with Mim. The pub very cute too. We had a cuppa there then loaded ... read more

Folk in England are truly fascinated by the possibility of just how dangerous life in Australia can be. From red-back spiders to box jelly fish, deadly snakes and man-eating crocodiles...they are equally delighted and terrified with the scope by which one could possibly meet their own end. I often find myself in conversations with work colleagues and clients about snakes and spiders and other creepy crawlies and people can hardly disguise their terror and delight. There's even a television program called 'Australia's deadliest creatures' which is dedicated to scaring Brits even more. I do confess that Adam and I both acknowledged we were leaving the deadliest continent on earth as we flew out of Sydney that first time (it was small bit of consolation from an otherwise teary me). The fact that Britain itself offers very ... read more

Another climbing trip. I think I found a new hobby and my mountain bike may be getting jealous. On our way to the climbing area we went through a field full of cows, goats and sheep (nothing unusual for this area). Chuck and I stayed a bit late at the rock face and darkness fell upon us. Our journey back to the car we fell off track just a bit since we lost light and had to navigate with headlamps. We trudged through UK swampland for about two miles before we finally got to the field that we originated at, only something really odd was going on. There were no cows....Only the occasional evil red goat eyes spying on us. Were they planning a sneak attack on us in retribution for what we did to their ... read more

I don’t know where to start with this one, because this was one of the best weekends I have ever had in my life… so here it is from the beginning. This was the ‘S no Rally 2008. (That’s no rally) I manage to get Thursday night off work because we were over manned, which gave me all day Friday to get ready for this event. I’d made pervious arrangements to meet up with my mate Paul at the M1 junction 35 and got the bike ready with ample time to spare. So off I set up to my local butchers to collect some Black Pudding for everyone at the rally when the phone rang. I was sat at the traffic lights in Wombwell with “Johnny B Goode” (my ring tone) playing out in my pocket ... read more
