The quest for visas has been a long and tiresome journey, our nepalese vis succumbed quite easily via post.next was the chinese one! which involved setting off from the lake district @ 6.30 to manchester where we came across rush hour traffic ,and due to having no A-Z mild confusion.after receiving a guiding light from a very pleasant post office clerk we were soon heading in the right direction, and were even walking up the stairs to the visa office, only to find that our wallets were indeed empty.........Doh! so another mission was formed in order to find cash. after drivng round again we came across an empty ATM ,then a sainsburys (without an ATM) and finally one with money in,that charged you to get it out :-(.after heading back to the embassy (& spotting that sainsburys ... read more

HELLO ALL! I have half an hour today to type away! I read yesterday's entry, and it's pretty clear I didn't want to spend the time reading it over in case I lost it, as I did an email to Greg...! Glad it went through though - - - phew....! :) If any of you are having problems with viewing my entries and/or photos and/or posting comments, send me an email to lak71966@yahoo.com, and I'll try 'n help you. HI ALL! I have about 10 mins to type in a quick entry...but I'll be back tomorrow, or Sun/Mon to do another! Upon arrival, I caught a train to St. Pancras station, where I pick up another train to head to my Aunt Brigid's. I arrived, and got on the 2pm train...arrived at the Derby train station at 4pm. The last couple times I visited my aunt, I took a cab from the station. I would ask folks at the nursing home if there was a bus, and there was never a clear "no," so I decided to investigate a bit..(ok, I have 5 mins left....this is gonna be quicker than I thought!) Bottom line, she's doing well at 95 years old! Her memory's isn't as great as it once was...and I think she's entitled! She's ... read more

Had a leisurely ride back into Austria to camp at a lovely site beside Turner See, overlooking the mountains in Slovenia and wondering how we ever managed to get across them. Cycled virtually all the way into Klagenfurt on a beautiful cycle path beside a river/dam for hydroelectic power. The path delivered us right to the campsite that we first used, and the next day the cycle path delivered us right to the airport. If only it were that easy over here.... read more

I thought I'd try to get this blog thing up and running well before we set off, but I find that there's nothing to report and it seems I have to do some proper entries to have my blog allowed. What's wrong with pens and paper, I wonder. Anyway, we are now in possession of two very shiny new bikes - Mercian-made, with Rohloff gears. Photo somewhere around, if I can get the hang of this technology. We've had a trial run or two and all seems pretty good. In three weeks we go to Slovenia for a cycle touring holiday, so we are busy getting ready for that - sorting out bike-packing materials - namely CTC polybags and cardboard. A map of Slovenia arrived today, so I'll pore happily over that. We've just had ... read more
