The Peak District can be a tricky place in winter. The weather can change in an instant in the high altitude – well high altitude by UK standards. The Other Half seemed keen to have a day out, so I scoured the fixtures for inspiration within a sensible mileage. I checked the weather forecast to see if the relatively mild and dry conditions would forecast would continue into the weekend. I didn’t fancy the prospect of snow. I sent her a link to the Visit Buxton website, which carries some carefully selected photography that highlights the town as a cross between Harrogate and Bath. I knew full well that she would bite on the possibility and then I causally mentioned, that Whitby Town were also scheduled to be making an appearance in town. We ... read more

This morning we set the SatNav for the spa town of Buxton. After heading out of Stalybridge in the same direction as the last two mornings we turned south towards the A57 instead of making our way east on the A628. Siri took us on an interesting B road route over a hill and into Glossop where we picked up the A624. The journey was going really smoothly until we reached the point where we needed to navigate between the A624 and the A6 (South). Siri wanted us to turn left and then almost immediately take the third exit on the roundabout. Oops, the left turn instruction sort of got stuck in our heads and we went left and then left onto the A6 which was the first exit, not the third! This had us rocketing ... read more

Mam Tor Wednesday was still a glorious mid 20’s sunny day with very little wind. Mam Tor is a famous landmark in the Peak district only about 20 minutes drive from Buxton. The hills here suffer from frequent extensive landslips so Mam Tor derives its name from mother hill. We walked up to the top of the tor and along the ridges and saddles between the hills. There were many hang gliders on the top, launching into the updraughts. Strange seeing them just fill their sail like a kite and lift off. In the evening we saw Idomineo, Mozart’s opera seria. Again very well produced with a well matched cast of singers. Before each of the operas in this festival there is a talk by the director and usually the conductor to give some insights into ... read more

Monday in Buxton. A festival day today, we went to a fringe theatre, one woman show based on the story of The Green Knight. This is one of the Arthurian tales I have come across from reading Mallory’s Mort D’Arthur. The actor did an enthralling presentation of the story told from the point of view of The Green Knight’s Wife. It was in a small theatre seating about twenty people so it was quite intimate. A memorable experience. Our second opera of the festival was the daughter of the regiment. This was reset from a French regiment in the Tyrol, sung in French, to a motorcycle gang in California, sung in English. It was done by a small chamber opera company (Opera della Luna) on a shoestring so, given that they weren’t going to put a ... read more

Weekend with Laura and Nigel. Today we met up with Laura and Nigel. Laura is my cousin from Barnsley, an hour and halves drive away on the other side of the Pennines. They are staying with us in our apartment which was a real pleasure to have some extra time catching up. Laura is so much like her mother Pat. The spa town of Buxton with its grand promenades and venues all in use for the festival was showing off all it’s former glory. We had brunch on Sunday at a tea house before I had to fly off for Mass. I am not normally religious but the opportunity to see a Mozart mass in context was too much of a temptation. The Missa Brevis in D major with full choir, soloists and orchestra. This is ... read more

Back from a wettish weekend walking in the Peak District - fortunately no significant rain when we were walking on the Saturday but rivers still in spate and ground pretty saturated. Given that the UK has just experienced the wettest January on record and February shows every sign of being a repeat of January I guess we can't complain too much about getting a soaking while making the dash from the pub to the Saturday night curry. Notwithstanding this good fortune it still feels like a pretty good time to be leaving the country for a sunny 70F Buenos Aires. I've now taken care of admin and packed so am pretty much ready for the off. Planning to travel light on the basis that 5 months is far too long to anticipate every eventuality and Spanish ... read more

Original plan was to visit Lyme Park, but it was closed so looked at map and said let's try this route and we came to Buxton. In a valley but it must be a wealthy one by the looks of the homes and the fact that the place used to have its own Baths and a giant palatial hotel (The Palace). Several big homes are now used by solicitors, consultants etc. None were converted to model railways.... read more

Suzy is firmly staying put on the drive. She is still waiting for Wesley to come up and make Kathrein better. Alas no phone call nor e-mail today. Perhaps tomorrow or Wednesday when he says he is coming to Gloucestershire . At last our holiday seems to be coming upon us. We are counting the days down like excited children. Sion of course is getting even more eager and knows it is only 29 more sleeps until he gets away from this snowy weather and goes in search of the sun. Last year he managed to visit 13 countries on his travels and this year is looking forward to adding Bosnia to his list. He is over excited to be honest as his best friend Woolly has only 7 more sleeps until he goes on a ... read more

We organised a final training weekend to do some hiking in the Peak District over the Bank Holiday. Unfortunately we don't have any lofty mountains in England on which we can emulate the heights we will have to climb in Tanzania so the Peak District would have to do! The first day we completed a 15 mile hike which including walking along 'The Great Ridge'. It included summitting two 'peaks' but at only 462 metres (1516 ft) and 476 metres above sea level it isn't quite the same as the 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) we will be doing in Tanzania!! It was a stunning walk and one we would recommend anyone visiting the Peak District. The hike was only supposed to be 12 miles but we covered an extra 3 miles after some errors in navigation ... read more

I like caves. I’ve not really seen a great deal, but we did a tour around one when I was younger, and then, when I was around 17, we did an outdoor activities week away and did it properly; not just a walk in, walk around, walk out type of thing, but a proper ‘let’s sneak in through this little entrance and see where it takes us’ kind of activity, albeit under full instruction and with all the super-safe equipment you need to stick to the kind of health and safety rules that have pretty much outlawed similar school trips since then. In a way, I’d love to do it again, but in another, I’ve grown in every direction since then, and the idea of getting completely wedged in just because I discovered a fondness for ... read more
