The Langdales in central ish Lake District are absolutely brilliant. Properly rugged, they epitomise what's great about mountains. Another advantage is that you can get round the majority of them in a single day - albeit a big one. The day started at new Dungeon Ghyll hotel where the big kit decision of the day was the big fleece vs little fleece debate. Little fleece won so i started the walk off shivering and wishing I'd chosen the other fleece! I followed the road to the farm at the start of the Band, bypassing the Band and heading directly for Crinkle crags and Crinkle Gill which was to be the route of choice into the mountains. The Gill offers a very different ascent of Crinkle Crags from the usual route and is significantly quieter. Described ... read more

For easter I went up to the Lakes District. Getting there was a nightmare. I left straight after work on Thursday. 7 hours later I arrived into Barrow. Firstly it was delayed, then when I got on it was so packed. I sat on my pack the whole way in the aisle, unfortunately I was close to the toilets so I had to stand up to let people through every few minutes (A lot of them rude and obnoxious, I should have locked them in there). On the plus side I did manage to get a lot of reading done. I'm reading Gridlock by Ben Elton, he is one funny guy. Nic's dad is big on outdoor activities so on Friday he took us out for a walk. I was expecting a bit of a casual ... read more

Wetherlam may not be one of the heavy hitters in the Lakes District but its a worthwhile peak nonetheless offering quality views of the central fells and a couple of ridges to liven things up a bit. I added Swirl How and Great Carrs to the route to give a decent day out. My route started from the Low Tilberthwaite car park which offers the rare advantage of being free. The ability to glow in the joy of a free car park was soon displaced by a strong and chilling wind. The blue (ish) skies offered the hope of warmth only to be well and truly beaten by the wind which felt as if it had come straight off a glacier. Fleece and hat on and off up the path which ascends to the left ... read more

After visiting Scotland for a week and driving down through the Cheviot Hills and along the Roman wall, I eventually ended up in Carlisle to overnight. The plan was to spend time driving slowly down south visiting potters in the area. The main idea was to make my own pottery studio known to some British potters and entice them to come and visit me. As usual... the plan didn't work. First of all I needed more money sent to me from my bank in France. As I had arrived on a Friday night in Carlisle it meant waiting for the Monday morning before doing anything anyway. Luckily I saw a Ibis hotel as I drove into Carlisle. The main street was in shambles with a long ditch dug on one side and big blue pipes ... read more

First ever blog written by me. For no real reason other than it's the easiest way to show photos to people either on them, or interested in them. So this is it. Jolly boys outing in the lake District. The ride was "big day out" downloaded from a cheapo cd that Pickup bought. Weather - perfect - best day of the year so far for cycling - all bikes performed well except the bombproof titanium Global thousand pound bike that simon managed to crack (only noticed the day after) due to having his rockerfella wallet in his pocket. Night out in Penrith highly recommended, the finest wines available to humanity were consumed and several beers, gins, lagers. Top weekend. Get theJag fixed up, spend a week in the country... read more

Patterdale isn't quite the Lake District mecca in the same way as the Lake Windermere towns or Keswick but it does pack a punch with some decent mountains and is a worthy addition to any Lake District trip. Arguably one of the most famous routes up Helvellyn via Striding edge starts from nearby Glenridding, and the proximity of Ullswater makes it all rather splendid. On a decent February day I would noramlly be drawn towards Helvellyn (finishing off with St Sunday Crag), but I decided to give Place Fell a try for a bit of exploration in area I've never vsisited before and the temptation of the views to the bigger peaks seemed like an ideal compromise. The car park in Patterdale (opposite the Patterdale Hotel - big white building) charges £3 for all day, but ... read more

I had an amazing time during my whirlwind 8 week tour of England. Only a few hours after I had stepped off the plane in Manchester I was eating a bacon sarnie and went out shopping for an outfit for my Dad's wedding 2 days later. The wedding went very smoothly and everyone seemed to enjoy the day. Despite suffering from jetlag I managed to stay up until the early hours of Sunday enjoying the celebrations although I did have a sore head later on! Next followed a mad 7 hour drive across the country to my friend Nicky's and Brendan's to meet their new little boy James. It was worth the long journey and amazingly I managed to stay on the left handside for nearly all of the 350 miles! Next stop was my family ... read more

Home stay weekend is a big part of the Butler "experience" here in the UK and Ireland according to Ruth, Cathy, and Katherine, the three women who run my program who are kinda like everyone's young chic mothers. As I mentioned before I got my assignment the second or third day I was here and my family seemed like they would be the exact opposite of everything I had written down on my description sheet. I realize I don't know exactly what I wrote down on that fateful day back at UConn sometime last fall but I never said anything about being religious or liking children, two major aspects of my English family's life. As the day came closer (last Friday) I got more nervous but felt reassured as everyone else in my program was basically ... read more

Today I got back from a fantastic Church retreat near the Lake District. I met a lot of nice people, learned a lot from speaker Pete Gaskell and the Bible, and witnessed some of the most breathtaking views I've seen yet. The rugged scenery is absolutely gorgeous - this is the reason I decided to study in northern England - and I'm so glad that I was able to see this country side my first weekend after classes :) I will be adding pictures bit by bit, because the internet I use in my flat limits how much I can upload to the internet. Some pictures show the land right beside our Christian Center we stayed at. The view from my room was amazing! Very English to say the least. :) The other pictures show our ... read more

A retrospective entry, this one, as I completely forgot to document it earlier. So it was in January this year that I ventured north to the Cumbrian coast. Workington, to be precise. Now then, anyone who listened to Eddie Wareing, in days long gone by, reading out the Rugby League results on a Saturday night (do they read them out any more?) will have an intimate knowledge of that narrow band of towns which spreads across north-west to north-east England encompassing such notable places as Batley, Hunslett, Wakefield, Barrow, St. Helens, Widnes ... and Workington. As a sports mad youngster down in temperate Manchester, the names of these northern outposts of Rugby League were as familiar to me as the local street names yet I'd never visited any of them. That has now changed. Over the ... read more
