Well, as you can see it has been months since I've been able to update. I hope to fill you in on the semester, but I think it's best to start with the most recent and work back. I'm back in Le Mans after spending the Christmas break with Ruth's family in Brigham, a little town in Cumbria. Cumbria is the very north-west of England. You can see Scotland from Ruth's window and the sea is a short ride to the west. Brigham itself is an adorable little town with houses that are older than America. It's the English village you'd picture from TVs and movies - large but simple looking homes, stone walls lining the small twisting roads, fields of sheep lined with hedgerows in the distance. Empty bottles waiting for the milkman on the ... read more

Nic and I went for a walk on boxing day to the Abbey, it was where the Monks used to live until they got slaughtered by Oliver Cromwell and his army of anti-royalists. The Monks initially hide in the woods surrounding the abbey, the anti-royalists passed through thinking it was unoccupied. Then some idiot monk decided that it would be a good idea to ring the abbey bells in celebration that the anti-royalists had not found them. Nice one Einstein, the anti-royalists heard the bells and came back. I travelled back to London on Wednesday, worked Thursday and Friday and then decided that instead of staying in London for New Years by myself I would go back up to Barrow. My flatmates were going with friends of there’s up to Edinburgh, so on the Saturday morning ... read more

Well its another New Year and I hope you all had a good christmas. After going back home to Usk over christmas it has become apparent on more than one occasion that people have said I have put on some winter warmth. ( people saying hello accross a busy bar and making gestures to me in the form of a pregnant woman rubbing her belly) Therefore I am determined to get myself a lot fitter and what better way to start the new year off with a 5mile walk around Arnside. Arnside is a little village on Morcambe bay and even though it has the name that sounds like a 70's TV Cop drama its not a bad place to have a wander. The bay is reknowned for its strong currents and quick tides. apparently when ... read more

I reckon Ambleside is a great place. Surrounded by Lake Windermere and some quality mountains, easy access to some of the best parts of the Lakes. One of the walking advantages is that you can walk from the door of your chosen accomodation into some of the best lakeland scenery. My favourite walk is the Fairfield horseshoe which I start from Rydal mount but can easily be done in reverse from Ambleside itself. The route follows the road past the Church at Rydal Mount and heads for Nab Sca. This has both good and bad points. To start with the good, you get a lot of height quickly and at the top of Nab Sca you get great views of Conniston and the Langdale Fells, the downside is that it hurts. Stick with it though it ... read more

The Christmas Eve walk has become a bit of a tradition in hardship in recent times. Last year a horizontal hail stone storm on Coniston Old Man erradicated any views, but made me feel extremely manly! The mountain weather forecast for Christmas Eve 2006 hinted at the chance of a cloud inversion, and it was too good an opportunity to miss, the prospect of Christmas shopping infinitely more terrifying than a December day in the fells. I started from the national trust car park at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. The start offers the only 2 facilities you really need; a car park and a pub. Dungeon Ghyll is a fantastic place to start a walk the road into Great Langdale providing the feeling of leaving behind civilisation and entering the wilderness. The valley is flanked ... read more

A pretty busy week at work, ended early on Friday afternoon thanks to Dave (my boss) wanting to have a few beers at 1pm. We went and found a pub down the road and had a meal and a few quiets, well they were quiet until Dave decided to get into the swing of things by buying more and more beers and shots of sambuca. 5 pints and 2 shots later I had to get the train back to my flat, pack my bags and get on the train for the Lakes District. I thought I had done well, until I arrived in Barrow five hours later and unpacked to find that I had 2 pairs of undies, 2 t-shirts and about 12 pairs of socks to last me 5 days. Saturday I went for a ... read more

Hi all, We have been at Ambleside at the northern end of Lake Windermere in the gorgeous Lakes District of England since Friday and we leave tomorrow (Monday) morning. We have had a very relaxing time here - travelling up and down the length of the lake by ferry on a 2 day pass and visited The World of Beatrix Potter at Bowness which is half way down the lake(saw wonderful exhibition of all of her much loved characters - Caitlin's favourites were Jemima Puddleduck, the 2 naughty mice, and Peter Rabbit, of course). Today we caught a bus to the nearby village of Keswick which is the home of Derwent lead and coloured pencils, so we visited the Pencil Museum and learned how to paint with water-colour pencils. We also visited a Motor Museum - ... read more

Hi, I am very new to this so please bear with me! In addition to travelling overseas, I particularly love the English Lake District. It is so beautiful..... the mountains, the lakes, the vales.... so I thought I would highlight this before moving on to foreign themes. One special place for me in the Lake District is the Langdale Valley. Who's tried motoring up Hardknott Pass and Wrynose??? Not for the faint hearted those roads. I also love Ambleside.... fabulous Indian restaurant there in the main street. I hope to update this blog in the near future - after my next planned visit to the Lakes. Peace to all. ... read more

In what was our first real holiday in the UK we ventured to the land of lakes, leaves and the retired for a week with the parents. Seb (stepfather) had calculated the precise time for the best of the autumn leaves to show so off we ventured to Keswick. A 6 hour train trip up there took us to the gateway of the Lake District Kendal. From there we hired a car from the overenthusiastic 'Malc' and drove through to Keswick. We arrived on a rainy day (not an uncommon occurrence in the lake district- hence the lakes) but for the rest of the week the weather was perfect if a lot colder than London. We stayed in a converted barn just outside of Keswick called Brackenrigg (which would have been great if not for the ... read more

The perfect way to round off our trip in Geoff's footsteps to Canada (see earlier blogs). Mum, me and my dog Luca travelled to the Lake district in the North of England on a very wet and windy day to attend the war memorials in Kendal that both have Geoff's name on them. One in the Market Place and the other in .........Park near Romney Bridge. We'd also booked an appointment with the local newspaper The Westmorland Gazette to tell them our story and maybe get an article published along with the rest of the round up of Rememberance Day news. Never been a model for a newspaper photo before, it kept raining and was quite an interesting experience!!! The article was published the weekend after Remeberance Sunday and generated lots of calls from relatives and ... read more
