A solid nights sleep, we woke with the birds again… and the trains… and the rain and wind! To our surprise, of the 6 of us camping, only two of us remained; perhaps they are all planning to get to Kirkby today, but we have a planned stop halfway at Orton to make for two shorter days rather then another long one. Finally admitting the rain and wind were not looking likely to stop any time soon, we, rather expertly if I do say so myself, packed the soggy tent down without any of it flying away and headed out by 9am. Of course, who wouldn’t stop almost immediately after getting going, just ... read more

28 August 2019, Wednesday Day 12 of travel, day 8 on the Coast to Coast Brampton Grange to Orton via Shap. It was a night fighting the comforter. At 0030, I took the stuffing out and slept well with just the sheet. After breakfast we left the Crowne and Mitre with the path to connect to the main coast to coast path at Rosgill bridge. This is a little more than 2 miles to the ruins of Shap Abbey The photos and signs tell the tale but this was a massive church and community until King Henry VIII drove all Catholics out of England or killed them. Most of the stones have been removed and reused elsewhere. After about 2 hours and 40 minutes walking up and down the grassy hills and over a unique horse ... read more

To be fair it was excellent digs and our guides did a good job of getting our soaked hiking boots filled with newspaper and into the establishments boiler room. I was personally so pleased with the standard of accommodation tonight, a nice big room and excellent shower facilities made a hacking day end a bit better. Up bright and early for the next leg to Orton we had a hearty breakfast and a decent packed lunch on board, we were looking forward to a shorter and easier day today. There was a comedy moment when our guide Matt said “right let’s go” and promptly started off ... read more

More true Coast to Coast experiences....first time getting really lost so our mileage is a couple of miles longer than expected. We found ourselves in the middle of beautiful farmland and clearly off track. Despite two compasses and two maps and five brilliant women, we still weren't sure how to get where we wanted to go. We finally turned on one of the women's phone with GPS with an app where she had downloaded waypoints of the C2C route. We then were able to find our way back to the route. Tomorrow we plan to make use of this technology as soon as we question where we are! A highlight of our walk today was a visit to Shap Abbey.....the original tower from the 13 century still stands at the original height and the ruins still ... read more
