Dear All Greetings from London. We have just had a lovely, three-day Bank Holiday weekend at the beginning of May, and I took advantage of having the extra day by completing something that I started probably over three years ago now. I completed “Walk 4” in my 1998 book “Country Walks Around London” – yay! I bought this book second-hand from an Amnesty International Second-Hand bookshop in Hammersmith, probably over 10 years ago now. Although it was published in 1998, the “Country Walks Around London” has served me well over the years in following slowly but surely its 26 listed walks in surprisingly beautiful rural areas all around the city limits of London – I am now halfway through the book, having completed 13 walks, with 13 left to go. The walks vary in length from ... read more

The weather was beautiful today. Warm and still. There we clouds but they barely interrupted the the sun. We went out to Burnham Beeches-- not to be confused with Birham wood that comes to you. There we walked through the green light and saw old oak trees-- one of them is 800 years old and was so venerable that it had to have a fence around and a notice telling visitors not to feed it. We found out about pollarding but any attempt to describe what it is will send you into a coma. We then drove to Cookham which is on the Thames but a very different Thames to the one you find in London. The colour is the same --- bad coffee-- but it has rowboats and barges and sailing boats instead of chip ... read more

Day 142 - Seattle, WA - New York, NY We had an early start to catch our plane at 7.15am. It was a fairly stress-free flight but it did take 5 hours to travel the width of America! We arrived at 4pm NYC time and caught a taxi to our hotel. The taxi drive was pretty crazy and we both felt very sick....the taxi driver did not get a tip and Rob justified it with "well it was s*** driving and s*** music!". Luckily he did not drive away with our bags. The hotel is very basic but is in a very good location in Midtown. We dumped our bags and went straight off in search for New York pizza as we were starving. We headed towards Times Square and found a good little independent shop ... read more

Day 135 - Yellowstone NP, WY - Butte, MT We woke up and headed to Mamouth Hot Springs in the north of the park. It was one of the nicest geo-thermal areas of the park. We carried on north through the park into Montana and headed for Chico Hot Springs. We paid $4 for our swim and they had two pools; one of which was really hot and another which was too hot! They also sold beer for $1 a can so some of us just floated around with a few beers which was nice! We then had a short 4 hour ride in the van before we got to Butte, a run-down old mining town. After setting up camp and having a slightly unsuccessful curry for dinner we headed into town. I can safely say ... read more

Day 127 - Ouray, CO - Arkansas River, CO We got up nice and early so we could do a cooked breakfast. I took the reigns in the kitchen as no-one else seemed to want to take responsibility for running the skillet so I cooked up a feast of fried eggs and bacon. After a scrumptious breaky we headed over to Box Canyon falls for a short walk up and down a spectacular, unique glacial waterfall. We then headed across town to do a longer 5 mile walk on The Beer Creek Trail up to an old mine. The initial climb was pretty tough as we started at nearly 2000m above sea level but once we were up the views were beautiful with the valley, snowy mountain tops and waterfalls to take in. We stopped ... read more

Day 114 - Los Angeles - San Diego We left the Ghetto in good time as we wanted to get to San Diego in time to watch the Champions League Final, which was an 11.45am kick-off our time. We found a good little sports bar after being rejected from the only English Pub in the city that we had in mind (it was apparently to busy, although it would have had room for at least another 100 people had it been in England!) and settled down in front of the screen to watch the game. There were quite a few Mexicans supporting Barcelona but it was a fairly relaxed and friendly affair. Rob still insisted on getting very angry at the "diving" of some of the Barcelona players and I had to calm him down! ... read more

Day 120 - Las Vegas We were not meeting the tour until early evening so we used the last day in our hotel to gym, swim and wash! We also had sneaky burger from a burger joint we had been eying up on the strip for lunch which was yummy but the bread (as always) was a bit funky. We went to meet the group at 7 ish and we headed straight to dinner. On initial impressions the group all seemed really nice, with a good mix of Nationalities including Italians, Korean and Australians. The tour guide is friendly but also looks like a typical hardcore camper with full face of hair etc and he seemed a bit useless at organising things (my pet hate!). We had a nice dinner at an American style Italian restaurant ... read more

Hello All Only 5 weeks to go and we'll be leaving our 9 to 5 jobs behind and greeting sun kissed thai beaches and beginning our 4 month trek around the globe. Have begun to look at hostels in Bangkok, found a really nice place with "grotty rooms and no air con" but decided we might go a little more upmarket than that. Keep you all posted ... read more
