Day 142 - Seattle, WA - New York, NY

We had an early start to catch our plane at 7.15am. It was a fairly stress-free flight but it did take 5 hours to travel the width of America! We arrived at 4pm NYC time and caught a taxi to our hotel. The taxi drive was pretty crazy and we both felt very sick....the taxi driver did not get a tip and Rob justified it with "well it was s*** driving and s*** music!". Luckily he did not drive away with our bags.
The hotel is very basic but is in a very good location in Midtown. We dumped our bags and went straight off in search for New York pizza as we were starving. We headed towards Times Square and found a good little independent shop to have our first slice and from here we continued to wander around the very busy square.
We were really tried so did not stay out long before going back to the hotel to plan our next couple of days in the city.

Day 143 - New York, NY

We got up at 8.00am as we had a long day planned. We

set off on the walk to downtown Manhattan stopping in a few shops on the way. We reached Battery Park around midday. From here you catch the ferry across to The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island so we joined the long queue to get to the islands. There was a queue for tickets, a queue for security and a queue for the ferry so it took a while! It was worth it though - the statue is huge and much grander than I thought it would be. I think everyone forgets that the statue is on a huge base which makes the whole monument look much bigger than you are expecting. We took a wander around the island before catching the ferry back to Manhattan via Ellis Island.
We stopped for lunch in a little sandwich shop before taking a look at Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange building and Ground Zero. From here we walked back up to our hotel where we dumped our bags before grabbing a quick salad for dinner. We then went back to our hotel to shower before heading off to the Empire State Building to attempt to catch sunset from the top.

We failed! The queue was very painful, there was a queue for security, tickets, the first lift and the second lift and then when we finally made it to the top it was pitch black and so busy that it was hard to see anything. It was still good to see New York by night from that high but I think that the visibility would have been better during the day.
After finally escaping the Empire State Building (yep there was a queue down too!) we went for a few drinks in a pub up the road where we watched the New York Yankees play baseball. On the way back to our hotel we could not resist a few slices of pizza from our favourite New York pizza joint Pronto Pizza.

Day 144 - New York, NY

The main item on our agenda was to hit the shops hard. We made our way up from Midtown via Grand Central Station to the top of 5th Ave and spent the whole say zig-zagging back and fourth until we made it back. We must of spent at least 2 hours in Abercrombie and Fitch alone - officially one of the

craziest shops in the world. They spend a lot of money employing models to dance around the staicases but no one can tell you where anything is! We ended up spending almost 12 hours shopping - a record for me (Rob) and we did spend rather a lot. Everything is so cheap though!!

Day 145 - New York, NY

Our last full day of travelling! We walked north to Central Park and had a wander around to The Rambles, Observatory Lake, Strawberry Fields etc. It was nice but we both found it to be a bit samey. Once we were really hot and sweaty we decided to head back to 5th Avenue where we had another quick look in the Apple store (and made use of the free internet!) before deciding to quick-step it to Times Square to try and catch the end of the Murray match in the ESPN bar. We were unsuccessful - he had already kicked ass - so we made our way back to the main shopping area to do our last NYC shopping. Much to Rob’s anguish we ended up getting caught up in the craziness of Abercrombie and Fitch for the second

day running as I tried to find Jess a hoody!
We were back at our hotel in the early evening so we slowly got ready to go out for a few drinks to mark our last night away. We had a quick salad (the “make your own salad” bars and legendary!) on the way to The Ginger Man - a bar with 100’s of different beers from around the world. We had a couple of drinks here before going to another bar just down the road where we could not resist but order a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - a very fitting end to our trip! We had a really nice evening reminiscing about our trip and we could not resist but finish the evening off with a slice of Pronto Pizza on the way home.

Day 146 - New York - Chesham!

We woke up and checked out leaving our bags at the hotel. There were a couple of sights I wanted to see before leaving NYC for the first time. Namely Madisson Square Garden and The UN Headquarters. After we had done our last sight seeing we set off for the airport. We were

quite early and had no money left so it was quite a long wait but we were strangley excited about our next destination - home!
