It has been several days since I've been in Geneva but my settling down has been time consuming and tumultuous, and hence it is not until now that I have the opportunity to scribble some of my experiences down. So, I guess I should go through it in a pragmatic chronological sequence. June 8th - I arrived in London 4 hours behind because of mechanical difficulties with the Air Canada plane. I was sweating bullets on touchdown as I feared missing my EasyJet connection at Gatwick airport. Thankfully, buses run regularly between Heathrow and Gatwick, and I was able to get there with a full 40 minutes to spare. On the bus between the airports, I met a medical physicist from Ottawa who was quite the world traveller. I perhaps made the mistake of adding fuel ... read more

We then spent 3 nights in Interlaken at Balmer's Hostel, which isn't that bad, but it's mostly a constant party and there are lots of beds to a room (like 12 in ours, up to 34 in some). Some of the beds were right together, lengthwise, so you are sleeping with complete strangers, possibly of the opposite sex. So Balmer's isn't that great, it failed to fulfill its purpose of giving me a place to sleep and shower due to the constant party going on and the cramped quarters. Our first day we didn't do anything, since we got to Interlaken around 6 or 7 at night (I think) due to long train rides through Italy and whatnot out of La Spezia. The second day we climbed up to Gimmelwald and Murren near the Schilthorn, which ... read more

I got to Interlaken a few days ago and its been intense. Yesterday I went Canyoning which is basically a combo of high jumps into waterfalls and rock climbing, and body surfing down the river. We did a few jumps, one from about 10ft and the higest one from about 40ft it was crazy. We also layed down and let the water just carry you down the rapids, seemed pretty dangerous but only 2 people got minor cuts. I only got 2 mins of the internet left but in about an hour ill be jumping off a cliff and hangliding, kinda crazy. Ill try to buy a token later and let you all know how it goes.... read more

Arrived in Zurich, sleep deprived and dizzy, luckily the Swiss are so amazingly logical that I managed to get from the airport and onto my train to Geneva without having to communicate with a single human being. Geneva is beautiful, the lake is spectacular, the views on the way were amazing, the people were lovely and spoke French german and English, so I had almost two out fo three, as far as communication went. Walked around the newer part of the city for a few hours and then died for twelve. It was YHA hostel and they tend to be geared fairly strongly to school groups in Europe, so they´re not the most social places to stay. Headed out onto the lake and checked out the Chateaus etc etc. Very touristy and lovely,. The old town ... read more

Date: 31.12.2004 Destination: Zurich, Switzerland Day: 5 We reached Zurich early in the morning. We had a few hours to look around before heading to Interlaken so after exiting from the train station, we walked straight to the old town. There are a lot of boutiques and posh shops around, but nothing original to Switzerland. We were hungry so we find some cheap food in the old town but to no avail, the cheapest food, a kebap costed around RM30! No choice but to eat it. Zurich is very peaceful and clean, feels like an isolated mountain town from the world, with the snowy mountains around. As we walked further to Grossmuenster Cathedral, we saw just a normal small church. Maybe the 4 tiring days of touring Italy had taken its toll, so we were now ... read more

We took a trip up to Lucerne, Switzerland from the 17th to the 23rd of December. We figured it would be nice to be in a winter wonderland. We had a great time, saw a lot of beautiful things, and froze our butts off. Lucerne is a really neat little tourist town set by a lake in an absolutely breathtaking environment. Parts of the town date back to the 14th century, and have an absolutely medieval feel to them. Our first couple of days in Lucerne were spent looking around the town and enjoying the local sites. It was cold and rainy, so whenever the weather would clear up, we would head out to check something new out. We saw the Lion Monument which was very pretty (even if it could use a cleaning). Then ... read more

Right after finishing up my semester in Lithuania, I flew down to Geneva via Copenhagen in order to join my travel study (Geneva 2 Rome, TWU). Due to flight schedules, I ended up flying in the night before the group arrived. Since I had never been in the city and couldn’t stomach prices for transportation or lodging, I stayed in the Airport over night. A must do experience for everybody (once is enough though). Geneva was a fun airport to do this in, because it is a minor enough transport hub to actually shut down at night. The police came by to make sure that those of us who were staying would be staying all night, and then proceeded to lock the doors. I assumed that there was some form of fire escape available to us, ... read more

The hostal here in Interlaken is really good; i met alot of cool cats and there is a nite club in the basement. The bad thing is they wake you up at 9am and make you leave your room...this so you will want to do one of their activies so you have something to do in the day. So today I ended up going rock climbing up in the alps. It was a really amazing experience but i'm so tired after climbing and hiking the day before. I think I need a vacation. Switzerland gives me a great feeling; so tranquil and peace yet you see the swiss army walking with machine guns and fighter jets flying through the mountains. In fact I had a drink with of the army guys at the bar...it's manditory ... read more
