Hi all! Hope this finds everyone well....I was in Switzerland this past weekend and it was incredible. I did not ever want to leave. I went with a whole group of people: Kat, Ashley, Joe and Phil from Ohio and Erica, Kristin, Anne and Mike from Boston. We stayed in Interlaken, which I think is in central Switzerland, set right int he middle of the Swiss Alps. It was only 11 hours away by train. We had to sleep in a sleeper train, and it was pretty cool. I did not mind it at all and I slept fairly well. We got to Switzerland on Friday morning and rented bikes to ride around the town. It was so cool there were cute little Swiss homes and cows everywhere. On Saturday I went paragliding over the Alps. ... read more

After our expedition up the Matterhorn, we walked around the village of Zermatt. There is a glacial river running through the center of town with hills rising on either side dotted with chalets. There are no street addresses, so you just have to follow signs at the intersections and wind your way uphill and around corners to find anything. To get to some of the hotels, you enter a tunnel alongside the river then ascend an elevator 5 stories to the lobby. The tunnels are lined with rooms for ski storage. The main street is cobblestone. It was here that we found Grampi's restaurant for dinner, serving Swiss-Italian cuisine at reasonable prices. Afterwards, we stopped into a pub with free Wi-Fi to check some email and grab a hot cocoa. The band on stage wasn't half ... read more

Today we conquered the Matterhorn! Well, we didn't summit it per se, but did take the cable car up to the ski area for fantastic views of the peaks and Zermatt in the valley below. The pictures really do tell the tale better than I can. Words like magestic and awesome spring to mind... We were up at about 9000 feet so it was very cold and windy up there. Cheryl and I immediately got altitude headaches but the guys seemed to be fine. Another example of our finely tuned female senses. We decided to walk the second stage back down to the village via a field of sheep and a forest of changing leaves. I tried my hand at yodeling...didn't get quite the echo effect I was going for but fun nevertheless! ... read more

We awakened to thick fog over the lake today. Only had the morning to explore before catching the train to Zermatt, so we walked over to the Old Town area to look around. We found a creperie for breakfast with a fantastic menu, however the proprietor explained they don’t actually serve crepes until after noon so we settled for crossaints and tea instead. A note on the crossaints: French crossaints taste like butter flavored air. They are so light that when you take a bite, the dough expands back to its original shape instead of sinking in like the knock-offs in the States! The cathedral was nearby so we stepped in to check it out; it was built in the 1300s! The Chapel of Macabees off to the side is amazingly beautiful. As a bonus, you ... read more

Ok, seriously the best trip ever, the most gorgeous place i have ever seen. I absolutely loved this trip. If you have not been, you must. I will definitely be going back. It was so much different from the city life. Clean, more bikes than cars, wild life, mountains, clear blue water, nice, english speaking people, it was fantastic. The train ride up was not as thrilling. We had a sleeper car; yeah we were packed in there. Six beds in a little room, slightly uncomfortable. I tried to sleep most of the way. But they brought us a nice little breakfast when we woke up and, man, the view when we woke up was amazing. The houses are exactly what you would imagine for this region, and the mountains, god, the most breathtaking mountains with ... read more

12/10/05 - In Switzerland we said farewell to our petite cousins (distant cousins) - Jean, Beatrice, Jean-Frédéric and my Uncle Robert at a restaurant on the banks of Lake Bienne. We discovered that Swiss cuisine is not at all comparable to the French food we have grown used to. Jean- Frédéric was on his way to Lausanne to start his studies at a business college, so we all tagged along on the drive from Alsace to Lausanne. We followed Jean’s green bus through Alsace to Switzerland, via the many tunnels that finally get you to Lausanne. The Swiss don’t just put holes in their cheese; they also put them through their mountains. The many tunnels through the Alps certainly make road travel a lot faster than if you had to drive over the Alps. We left ... read more

What an amazing trip. Switzerland is a beautiful, picturique country. We left on the Friday night from Stanstead airport with a slight delay (as you can tell i dont have much luck when it comes to flights and delays we arrived quite late about 11ish and had to find our way to the city center to our hotel. We didnt too badly considering we didnt know the language and took public transport. Saturday we decided we had to go see if we could find some snow. So we caught a train at 11.00 and took a 3 hour journey, 2 trains, 1 tram, 1 bus and 2 gondallas later to be 3000 ft above sea level on a glazier. The journey through the little villages on the passes up to the top where just so quaint ... read more
