December has been a month of excitement and travel. The day I returned from Copenhagen my friend Matt, who is studying abroad in Madrid, came to visit me; Rachel popped down from Salzburg; and in between the Christmas markets and sightseeing we had a blast. Vienna is particularly beautiful during the advent season, which the Austrians celebrate in a relaxed, family-oriented way. Everything is decorated for the season; the cobbled streets of the old town are framed by christmas lights that crisscross between the buildings, and alpine-style huts spring up everywhere to sell Lebkuchen (soft gingerbread cookies), Gluehwein, and Punsch (spiced drinks). The day Matt left, I went for a visit to my roommate's family in Upper Austria. I love visiting them - her mother always has something delicious waiting for us, like a piping hot ... read more

Ok so we were going to rent a smart car and drive to Zurich, but we over slept so that plan fell though. we still really wanted to rent the Smart so we walked down and did it any way with no real plan. we ended up going to the a town about 30 mins away and looking at some castles there. then we drove home and went to the top of Mt. Bre to check out the view. I know its not the greatest Birthday story but itturned out to be a pretty fun day. I missed you all and wish i could have been home for the celebration but i got the consolation prize of waking up to snow the day after Thanksgiving. talk to you all soon. ... read more

My mate Olivier has been living in Geneva, Switzerland for the last few months saving up to go back to South America next week, so I while work was a bit slow I took the week off to go and hang with him before he left. it was great, as always to see him. He was house sitting for some friends of his, and got to use their motorbike so we pretty much boosted around all the time on that. we went across to France a couple of times to eat or check out sweet views of the Alps. We ate lots of great Cheese and Chocolate, went out pretty much every night, and I bought a brand new, genuine Swiss army knife - Evolution model!!! did I mention the Cholcolate? wow!. Geneva is a very ... read more

Hello Reader. I called Claude from Pascal's house in Lausanne to let him know I would be arriving by train, (a forty-five minute trip). I got to the train station, bought my ticket, checked the platform and walked on over. The train was there so I hopped on. After stuffing my gorilla-of-a-pack on to the overhead shelf, I sat down, looked around at the crowded train, and began to read. After about thirty minutes or so, the train was really beginning to thin out. I had thought most of these people were headed for Geneva. I was checking the stops through the windows to make sure I didn't miss Geneva, but as the last person got off at a station that was NOT Geneva, I got worried. The train didn't look like it was going anywhere ... read more

Hello Reader. For dinner the other night I went to a restaurant called Manora. My guidebook recommended this two floor buffet style restaurant. I went in, it was mostly self-explanitory, a kind local explained the pasta station. I collect all the ingridients myself, hand them to the pasta guy, and presto, my personalized pasta is prepared. I grabbed a bowl and piled it high, I handed the bowl to the guy. An uproar of laughter followed. He held up my bowl and shouted something in German to the salad bar attendant, who then started laughing, and then shouted something to the cashier, who then started laughing. It was all so funny, it seemed, to everyone but me. What had I done? I jumped over the counter and punched him in the mouth. Well, that is what ... read more

Hello Reader. I would call it 'taking a zero.' Thursday was a day consumed by laziness. I didn't do too much, but enjoyed every bit of it. I woke up late and arranged some couchsurfing for the next week and a half. I headed to the cinema where Daniela works and she allowed me to use her pass to get upstairs to the Panarama depicting a war. The Bourbaki. It was a large round room with three hundred and sixty degrees of wall covered with a mural. It was supposed to make you feel like you were apart of the war. It was quite interesting. I then leisurely walked along the lake until I came upon a sinking swan, only after screaming 'NOOOOOOOOOO!' and jumping in to save it did I realize that it was just ... read more

Hi All, Well Anna and I headed off to Geneva for the weeekdn where we were catching up with good friends of ours from NZ. Steve, Sarah, and little Caleb had been travelling through Africa on a mission trip and in between that and heading to America for some training we were able to spend 2 great days with them in the beautiful city of Geneva. Friday night was again a great reminder of having London as a base. Leave work as normal and jumped on a plane at 8pm and 1 hour 15 minutes later we are in Switzerland. Very cool. After a bit of a catch up Friday night we were up nice and early and of course greeted by a gorgeous morning. After a few hors chatting which I think Steve and I ... read more

I like to say Jung-frau to the tune of Ya-hooooo in the commercials (it's more fun that way)! :) Today was our highest altitude day yet, reaching heights of over 11,600 feet (in the Sphinx observation tower)!! We began our journey at Interlaken Ost (East). We bought round trip tickets from there to Jungfraujoch at a discount as an add on to our Swiss rail pass (still over $100 per person). It takes about 2.5 hours each way. You can get off in any of the towns along the way to explore, but this time of year the trains run less frequently than in summer so this isn't as practical. The route is as follows: Interlaken Ost - Lauterbrunnen (change trains)* Lauterbrunnen - Kleine Scheidegg (change trains) Kleine Scheidegg - Jungfraujoch (final station at the top; ... read more

Here are some photos taken in Interlaken over the course of our time there. It is a beautiful setting, nestled in a mountain valley between 2 lakes (hence the name). We had a great dinner one night at a wine bar called Benacus, right off the old town square. J had a fabulous selection of cheeses with nuts and fruit as a appetizer. They feature a "cheese bar" so he was able to choose his cheeses from a nice array; the chef explained each one as an added bonus. The ambience is very nice, well thought out and relaxing. Unfortunately, the waitress told us a new owner is taking over in January and has big plans to change the menu and the decor. We say if it ain't broke, don't fix it!! Today we made a new friend! Monty is mixed breed dog - we think pit bull/German short-haired pointer - who lives at our hotel in Interlaken. We desperately miss our Salty boy when travelling, so it's always nice to make new dog friends along the way. We found Monty frolicking in freshly raked leaves in the yard of the hotel. He's only 2 years old but has quite a tale to tell: some Mexican backpackers found him alone last year in Mont Blanc, France (hence his name) and brought him along to Interlaken. Upon their return to Mexico, they left him with the owners of the hotel. Monty is quite talented. In the evenings, he enjoys visiting the hotel guests. He wanders the halls and jumps up on his hind legs to scramble at the doors. ... read more
