So forget planes, trains and automobiles- today has been a story of an executive car at 05:15 😮then a ✈️to Milan ; a bus to Milano Centrale train station to board a train and sit in it for over an hour with no air con in 34 degree heat before being told to get off; bought 2 more tickets for the next train to then be told the original one was leaving 2 hours late! Boarded train again and managed to get over the border into 🇨🇭where a bizarre customs check took place ( we didn’t even show our passports) and then a TrenItalia employee told us there was a fault with the train and we needed to get off 😉 Thankfully we only waited 10 minutes before a new train arrived and the conductor told ... read more

Am Freitag habe ich meine 4. Arbeitswoche in Bern und damit gleichzeitig den 1. Monat erfolgreich beendet. Das einzige was mich noch interessiert hätte, ... read more

Waking up to another grey morning we contemplated on our neighbours an English elderly couple from Southern England who were camping in their rather small and damp tent. We did not envy them trying to brew up the night before on a camp stove with the wind howling around them and the rain falling by the bucket load. They spent the evening in their car rather than in their wet tent. The morning found them repeating the cooking arrangement for breakfast outside and when I spoke to them they uttered the immortal words "Mustn't grumble" - Typically British reaction to adversity. I was glad we had the warmth and comfort of the motorhome. They were heading north trying to outrun the bad weather to the Italian Lakes. After paying and picking up our passports we too ... read more

Bellinzona, a city of 17,000 people, is located in southern Switzerland in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, in which it is also the capital of that canton. It is famous for its three medieval castles, Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro. Figino is a small town located 45 min. south of Bellinzona, where I had to spend the night because all the accommodation in Lugano was booked up. It is located on Lake Lugano, where "I could see Italy from my window".... read more

Hello everyone!! This was a very eventful week/weekend for my classmates and I. We began classes on Thursday morning at 9 A.M. but the church bells were sure to wake me up at 7!! My first course is operation and supply change management and we are planned to finish the course by next Saturday. Friday was pretty uneventful. We had classes all day and worked as a group to try and finish our homework for the weekend. Everyone called it an early night because of we had a trip planned for all day Saturday. Daniella, our house mother, planned a trip to Bellinzona Switzerland. Bellinzona was a 45 minute train ride up Lake Capolago. The town is most famous for the three castles that were originally built in the 13th centry in the valley of the ... read more

Hello all, now to the best part of our trip so far... Our friend Ingo, from Freiburg, told us about this agricultural cooperative in the remote Ticino region of Switzerland. We had previously written to them while in Sarnen, and we super excited when we received the positive mail from Ulrico, one of the founders, a couple of days later . Our journey there was long but satisfying as we left Sarnen at around 9:30a and finally arrived in the hills of Pianta Monda at 7:30p, helped on our way by a kind stranger. Our adventurous travel there involved an amazing train ride through the snow capped Alps, where we traveled through tunnels in the mountains almost as much as on top of them. After 3 trains and 2 buses we were on the final and ... read more

Hey everyone, from now on, please check our blog site at the NEW location, which is here: http://sandra-and-derek.blogspot.com/ I think the way to subscribe is a little different, but it is only an RSS feed, and you should be able to click on the link marked 'atom' at the bottom of the page to do this. I will provide more details on this once I figure out how to do it myself. Some of the entries will also be out of order until we have time to fix that, too. Sorry for the confusion, everyone...... read more

Hey everyone, It has been quite an exciting few days for us here in Europe, but unfortunately it has also been a frustrating few days out in cyberspace. Many of you have let us know that you could no longer access the travelblog.org site to read our blog. In fact, travelblog.org itself was down from August 1-5. It's just come up today, and after reading the tech support forum, I can now tell you what has happened. Unfortunately, the story ain't pretty So apparently on the 1st, the one single (not backed-up) server that hosts the entire travelblog site got hit by a Denial-of-Service attack. The owner/admin of travelblog, in a state of panic, attempted to restart the mysql database. Unfortunately, he's not very good at mysql, used the wrong command and wiped out thousands of ... read more
