Day 17 Tuesday 9 October Cloud Soup Wake up 7:30am Breaky 7:45pm Leave 8:30 Breaky was okay. Nice lot of bacon and eggs. We left for our country excursion at 8:30am. There was a lot of cloud cover, so we couldn’t see the mountains. We had 2 Swiss Carriages (more like wagons) waiting for us near the local school. The ride was quaint and peaceful. There was ZERO noise in this sleep town. It was lovely looking at all the little local houses and gardens. We stopped at Han’s house for some beautiful home cooked cakes, drinks and wonderfully freshly squeezed apple juice. The horses all had bells on their reins which sounded beautiful. The cow bells were beautiful music. Delightful. This was a perfect morning out. We arrived back at 11:15am to pick up the ... read more

Day 17 Monday 8 October 2007 The Lake and the Lion of Lucern Wake up :6am Bags 6:30am Leave 7:30am Breakfast was pretty average again and my shower was cold. Not a good start when you don’t feel very well. We left for Lucern. There was a nice drive through the Apennines and then a stop at an Autogrill. Rob ordered a hot chocolate and virtually got pudding in a cup. Hilarious. It came out with the spoon standing straight up in the middle. It tasted nice, but not as a drink. Mostly a travel day today. As we crossed the Swiss Frontier, we watched them searching the car of a young couple very thoroughly. We weren’t stopped at all. We stopped at a self service spot for lunch. The food was lovely and fresh looking. ... read more

Day 7, we arrived in Luzern (or Lucerne in English), Switzerland. Luzern is built around (and surrounded by) lakes and mountains and began as a fishing village. The town is really beautiful and is famous for its bridges, the Chapel Bridge and the Old Mill Bridge. The bridges are from medieval times (14th century) and have even survived fires (one has been partially rebuilt). Swans float across the lake, and are said to be a gift from King Louis XIV as a thank you for the protection of the Swiss guards. To us, this city is a cross between Florence and Venice. The water was reminiscent of Venice, the bustling city was reminiscent of Florence. On our first afternoon here, we visited a Picasso museum - this one was really different, however…it was an exhibit of ... read more

Greetings from Switzerland! We arrived here after an amazing train journey from Lake Como. There were huge, huge mountains (some snow capped) and beautiful clear green streams and lakes. It was really picturesque and really enjoyable. So, news since we last updated. After Cinque Terre we went to Milan for 2 nights. Mixed feelings about Milan. The shops of course were impressive and completely over the top (as expected). Unfortunately our budget didn't extend to the 20,000 euro roberto cavalli dress...... Did manage to find some shops that were reasonably priced and bought a few things (of course...). The Duomo was beautiful and the main city area was fairly nice. Nowhere near the beauty and atmosphere of Rome though. There were also some dodgy areas proabably best not mentioned here.... The highlight was definitely seeing the ... read more

Rather than go back to Zurich to catch the train to Milan we decided we would instead head out to Lucern which was also nearby. Lucern also has a large lake and a river and two old medieval wooden roofed bridges which cross the river with old paintings above it. Lucern also has some remaining fortifications located above the river which we went for a short walk along before walking back to the station to catch the train to Milan.... read more

Switzerland was a breath of fresh air, quite literally. The difference in the quality of the air was quite noticeable almost as soon as we crossed the border on Monday morning- the scenery from the train (when you're not in a tunnel) is picture postcard, and arriving in Lucerne you immediately felt safe - unfortunately you also felt quite damp as it started to rain almost as soon as we arrived. Lucern is quite a pretty place and so well sign posted you would have to work really hard to get lost there! We were lucky enough to stay in an authentic Vietnamese Swiss Hotel....which meant the smells wafting up out of the kitchen even before breakfast had you thinking about Peking Duck for lunch before you'd even had your muesli. Our plan for Lucern was to venture ... read more

Switzerland Sucks. No wonder they have the largest suicide rate. Hell, I wanted to commit suicide when I was there! I went to Geneva, Luzern, and got tired of Switzerland (it didnt hold a candle to any of the other countries I have visited) so I decided to get the hell out of dodge. I booked a flight to Greece from Milan, Italy. How to get to Milan? Well, 350+ Swiss Franks (I told you to pull out your wallet) so I thought, "hell no!" and set off to hitch-hike to Milan. A wonderful gentleman dropped me off in a small town on the border of Italy, and I decided to stay for the night. the bus ride the next day to Milano would only be 26 Swiss Franks. (Grampy... you taught me well!!) Do the ... read more

Incredible is the only word I can think of to describe the day we had today. Yesterday, we were given the optional extras talk, and have decided on doing all bar 5 of the extra activities…there are just too many wonderful things to see and do! Today, we made the most of our two chosen extras, starting with a journey up Mount Pilatus. It’s peak is said to look like the face of Pontus Pilot, from biblical times. The early start was worth it today, as we missed all the traffic, and arrived a bit too early for our train ride up the 7000 foot mountain. I wouldn’t exactly call it a train - it is more a carriage, operated on a cog-wheel system. It is unbelievably steep - a 48 percent gradient! It is the ... read more

Yes, the wheels on our bus went round and round, all day long. We did some major driving today to get to Lucerne, a fabulous town in Switzerland. Thankfully, we had a few stops along the way to break the trip up. We left our little hotel in Wiesbaden fairly early in the morning - 7:15am…I am afraid these early starts will be fairly commonplace on our tour. No more sleeping in till 9am. Our first stop was a couple of hours later in Heidelberg - still part of Germany - and were able to stretch our legs. The castle here is right up on a hill above the city, looking over a small town square. Like most places in Europe, it looks like it is straight out of a postcard. Jon gave us the low-down ... read more
